Libraries are under threat from large commercial aggregators who provide services which are in many cases challenging the role of libraries. Information technology is also, however, an enabler for valuable collaboration between libraries to provide their own information-rich resources. Libraries can also collaborate in providing services, software and communities. Software communities supporting libraries (including open source) Technology projects for libraries featuring multi-institution collaboration The role of the library in increasing service reach through institutional collaboration (eg multi-institution MOOCS) Use of aggregation with distributed services to form rich data services

Although 'open' is used in MOOC name, this questions how the actual course material could be made truly open for adaptation or redistribution. The commentary below the article is interesting too

"MOOCs - International Information and Education Phenomenon?" ASIS&T Bulletin June/July... - 2 views

A brief article for an overview of MOOCs. Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 - Udemy, Coursera and edX - vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all.

Good article! I wonder what it would take to make education truly accessible for all?

Yes. Very good point about journalism being stronger as more people participate. But, an inherent part of citizen journalism is the consumer's ability to sift through what is news and what is opinion. Who checks the facts with "citizen journalists"?

The Open Educational Resources Research Hub - 2 views

I chose the Open Educational Resources Research Hub (OER Research Hub) for a focus for research, designed to give answers to the overall question 'What is the impact of OER on learning and teaching practices?' and identify the particular influence of openness. As open education now reaches a stage of maturity we need evidence about what works, what doesn't and why in order that lessons learned can be shared. Filling the gap in the evidence base and sharing data and methods widely is the intention of OER Research Hub. The project combines: A targeted collaboration program with existing OER projects An international fellowship program Networking to make connections A hub for research data and OER excellence in practice

This report is skeptical and hard-nosed, challenging some of the optimism which has fueled previous work in the Digital Media and Literacy tradition, raising concerns about what is happening to those who are being excluded from meaningful participation.

Very good essay about the future of books. I particularly liked chapter two where you get a kind of mixed image of the current state of the book; on the one hand, it is stated that e-book sales are declining to the benefit of the physical book, but on the other hand it discusses how giants like Amazon has a very negative effect on the book business. Interesting for sure!
