The Diamond Model of Open Access Publishing: Why Policy Makers, Scholars, Universities,... - 1 views

  •
"The debate on open access is a debate about the future of academia. We discuss the problems of for-profit academic publishing, such as monopoly prices and access inequalities and point at the limits of contemporary perspectives on open access as they are frequently advanced by the publishing industry, policy makers and labour unions. LibGuides. PRC SPCH 1311 1315 Jessen: Speech Communication and Public Speaking. CRAP Detection.

Crap detection is so important, especially in these days of more open knowledge, where there are so, so many avenues to get information, but not many obvious ways to know what is "good" information and what "bad".
  •
We are not aware of all the mistaken information that is online and that's why crap detection is so important.
  •
I strongly disagree with their list of 'crap' detecting guidelines. "Credentials"? "Reputable"? Fact or Fiction"? You gotta be kidding me. Most credentialed people I know are lost in the sea of institutionalized learning, and with it comes their arrogance that they know better - they don't. Those known as reputable are not walking the bleeding edge of knowledge. And fact/fiction is turning inside out as we begin to see more and more historical fictional information is now shown to be based in fact. ... LOL! ... (Not that I have an emotional attachment to this issue.) ;) ;)

9 models to scale open data - past, present and future | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog - 5 views

  •
The possibilities of open data have been enthralling us for 10 years. I came to it through wanting to make Government really usable, to build sites like TheyWorkForYou. But that excitement isn't what matters in the end. What matters is scale - which organisational structures will make this movement explode?

this is a good innitiative by Wits, Its good to see African University keeping up with the world trends in education. Considering the cost of education in SA this will make life easier. However acess to broadband and internet is still a problem.

Data sharing as an issue - Springer - 1 views

  •
Two of the articles might be considered as "position papers". Leah McEwen and Ye Li highlight opportunities for librarians as curators across the entire research life cycle, beyond ELNs and data sharing. Jeremy Frey and Colin Bird present a viewpoint on data sharing, addressing the reluctance of researchers to share information with their peers, and examining the processes of data exchange from the perspective of a trading environment.
