This is a great follow-up reading to the core reading for module5 from J. Willinksky (2006). I thought it was timely now though written 12 years ago, due to the surge in citizen video journalism and ease of access to government websites now for public policy information, voting and campaigning.

There are two versions (at least) of this text. One earlier version is a first draft of sorts "A BOOK CROWDSOURCED IN ONE WEEK MAY 21-28, 2010" http://hackingtheacademy.org/ The url supplied above (http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?cc=dh;c=dh;idno=12172434.0001.001;rgn=full%20text;view=toc;xc=1;g=dculture) gives you access to the slicker version. Both can be read online. The text professes to a hacker ethos: "1 The world is full of fascinating problems waiting to be solved. 2 No problem should ever have to be solved twice. 3 Boredom and drudgery are evil. 4 Freedom is good. 5 Attitude is no substitute for competence." One of the opening chapters encourages academics to "get out of the business." "Burn the boats/books" focuses on the need to move away from "librocentrism." Something I hadn't thought of: "A PDF document is not a web-based document. It is a print-based document distributed on the web." This is to make the point that online materials should be interactive, which a pdf is not. The focus is hacking scholarship, teaching, and institutions. Seems worth dipping into here and there .

El objetivo de este documento es proponer a las bibliotecas universitarias una estrategia tecnológica para adaptarse a los cambios que se están produciendo en los ámbitos del aprendizaje y la investigación. Los principales cambios a los que nos vamos a referir son: la web es la nueva plataforma para la comunicación de la información, esta web está orientada no sólo a los humanos sino también a las máquinas y está potenciando el trabajo en red y en colaboración. Por otra parte, esta forma de trabajar está generando un nuevo concepto de unidad de información, modelada no sólo por la necesidad de representar nuevas formas de publicación (texto, data, simulaciones…) en las nuevas prácticas científicas, sino también por los cambios en la naturaleza de las herramientas de creación y los entornos en que se usan. Finalmente, cada vez más, los usuarios no sólo consumen información, sino que también quieren participar en su generación (blogs, wikis, youtube, slideshare...). Se describen las implicaciones que esos cambios están teniendo en el entorno de las bibliotecas universitarias: la importancia del e-learning, los CRAI y el nuevo modelo de comunicación y publicación científica y se indican algunas líneas de actuación para orientar la estrategia tecnológica de las bibliotecas a la luz de estas transformaciones: nuevo concepto de unidad de información, interoperabilidad, flexibilidad y arquitecturas abiertas.

In the whole article, there's one quote from Clive Thompson got my attention, "Twitter is the place where you could be like 'here's my one thought' and then link somewhere. I no longer needed to write a one-paragraph blog post about it, and Twitter scratched that itch and gave it a larger audience than it might have had." While people addict to twitter for fun, the fact is Twitter is actually a very good platform to share and learn knowledge.

"MELIBEA is a Spanish database that uses a composite formula with eight weighted conditions to estimate the effectiveness of Open Access mandates (registered in ROARMAP). We analyzed 68 mandated institutions for publication years 2011-2013 to determine how well the MELIBEA score and its individual conditions predict what percentage of published articles indexed by Web of Knowledge is deposited in each institution's OA repository, and when. We found a small but significant positive correlation (0.18) between MELIBEA score and deposit percentage. We also found that for three of the eight MELIBEA conditions (deposit timing, internal use, and opt-outs), one value of each was strongly associated with deposit percentage or deposit latency (immediate deposit required, deposit required for performance evaluation, unconditional opt-out allowed for the OA requirement but no opt-out for deposit requirement). When we updated the initial values and weights of the MELIBEA formula for mandate effectiveness to reflect the empirical association we had found, the score's predictive power doubled (.36). There are not yet enough OA mandates to test further mandate conditions that might contribute to mandate effectiveness, but these findings already suggest that it would be useful for future mandates to adopt these three conditions so as to maximize their effectiveness, and thereby the growth of OA. "

Una de las características fundamentales, que ha permitido el crecimiento exponencial de la red mundial de información, es que ha sido una plataforma abierta, lo que ha dependido de tres factores esenciales: "1) unlimited links from any part of the Web to any other; 2) open technical standards as the basis for continued growth of innovation applications, and; 3) separation of network layers, enabling independent innovation for network transport, routing and information applications" (Berners Lee, 2007).

Food patents based on knowledge that has been around for centuries is controversial, risking threats to food security due to concentrated ownership of this otherwise common knowledge.

Private space: Author Cory Doctorow in his study. Here's a story you've heard about the Internet: we trade our privacy for services. The idea is that your private information is less valuable to you than it is to the firms that siphon it out of your browser as you navigate the Web.

Hi I'm Christina Chavez-Reyes. The account listed is a work account. I found this piece insightful about the trade-offs to privacy for using internet services. The author frames the issue as a "war" between "the rebels and the empire" to maximize the value of our privacy. We are often led to believe consumers (the rebels) are powerless against internet corporations (the empire); however, the author suggests a solution to empower consumers that is embedded in the very open source culture which created the issue. It demonstrates the potent innovation that open source culture possesses over other models of production that are explained in course videos.

Mario Prata, a Brazilian writer, did an unexpected thing back to 2000. While he was writing a book, internet users watched alive. It was very cool for that time. A very interesting response to the Wiley article from Module 2. The case for forcing a choice between a CMS and only open resources seems to be one that is set for failure as I don't think it is realistic to expect every college student to have the self-motivation to persevere through learning how to navigate the open web for learning without the scaffolding and structure provided by a CMS

this is an Public Colombian intitution, that is using the conected learnig as a tool but what see as a problem and a possible cause of inequality is thar in my contry only 10 million people have acces to the web. is this making the gap bigger.

Inkscape is a very handy drawing tool that can be used for a variety of applications including signs, posters, page layout and other options when a photo editor really isn't the right tool.
