Some historical background on MOOCs.

A nice journey through the history of MOOCs - I like the storytelling version using the comparison to Foucault.

Interesting open text book created by the Free Technology Academy that outlines the history, culture, and use of free software. "Free Software" is ambiguous in English and not the commonly used terminology. However, in Spanish and French it is possible to make a distinction between "Libre software" and "gratis" software. The authors argue that the term "open source" is too technical focused, while "libre software" better focuses on the rights of the users and community. Interesting and worth skimming for reference. a huge citizen science project in the USA, formalizing the sharing of the traditional (and ancient) practice of Phenology. Phenology is an important way to be connected to the natural world around you--basically observation of seasonal changes. People have been collecting observations for all of human history--this project seeks to help standardize recording of the data so that it can be shared en mass, creating huge and flexible data sets for many different current and future scientific experiments. "Nature's Notebook is a national, online program where amateur and professional naturalists regularly record observations of plants and animals to generate long-term data sets used for scientific discovery and decision-making."

"The editing process is more important today than it has ever been in the history of the world" (Ted Koppel). This short video is part of a (1990) documentary on Memory and Imagination by Michael Lawrence. Ted Koppel's critique of available information is incisive and especially striking because it makes a clarion call that hasn't been heeded at all.

Biographical Dictionary is a source of biographies. The collection of biographies is an open source built like Wikipedia. Everyone who loves history is invited to contribute to the Dictionary.

For any teachers out there: I'm probably going to use this at some point with my students. Brief but informational.

Very interesting and easy to understand by younger students!

It is really a very interesting manner to conceive how Wikipedia was created and how it evolved.
