The European Commission is organising an High-Level Conference on "Education in the Digital Era". It'll take place in Brussels on the 11th December. Discussion will also take place online. Themes will be adrressed in advanced, promoting an online debate feeding into the conference, and during the day allowing anyone to follow-up and contribute to the debate on spot. The report focuses on trade, copyright infringements, and the need to protect the products of creativity. The report discusses the subject globally. It is an extensive report that highlights the increased awareness of copyright protections and cooperation among different countries to legislate against infringements. Very helpful to see the scope of intellectual property rights concerns.

This video highlights ways in which educators (and parents) can incorporate 21st century skills in their lessons to digital natives. Admittedly, as a teacher, I get overwhelmed by all of the information out there and feel pressure to use technology that I'm still learning to be comfortable with. This is a good video that can show you how to get started, geared more towards middle/upper school.

The video begins with 3 minutes of visuals and - very annoying - piano music. I would have turned it off after 30 seconds because I assumed that there would be 13 minutes of this. But since fraup74 says it was a good video I skipped ahead to see if there was more. Otherwise, I would not have persevered. In terms of content, it is a good basic resource (a woman speaks, using screenshots to show how to use online tools). The video is not very engaging.

While not exactly on topic, and newspapers are not generally considered Scholarly publishers, they do engage with the public, and frequently act as a liaison between journals/researchers and the public. In the past ten years or so, people have gotten used to accessing, for free, newspapers and television reports as a way to inform themselves. While this is good for the individual, it is not so good for the publisher. Many traditional news outlets have been struggling to find a way to generate revenue in a way that neither smacks of consumerism, nor excludes the average citizen from participating. IN the UK, the liberal-leaning newspaper The Guardian has begun selling 'memberships', and hosting events ranging from lectures to classes on things as diverse as photography and creative writing.

In South Africa there are similar projects to the ones Cornell is doing. they are being run through the Avian Demographic Unit at UCT and strongly supported by Birdlife South Africa. Birdwatching is one of the areas where an ornithologist is often on an equal footing with amateurs, and sometimes behind professional guides, when it comes to field identification. It is therefore a suitable field in which citizen science can play an important role.
