Relating to the digital copyrights issue, here's a recent article regarding Satellite radio…in this day and age where new and old music is being played, it's become more confusing as to what rights music services (or other arts) have. They might be playing music that they may or may not have the right too (and yet bands have no idea). Unfortunately copyright laws seem to have a long way to go before they become untangled. In the battle between today's digital-music services and yesterday's oldies artists, score one for the geezers. The founders of the '60s rock band the Turtles won a summary judgment on Monday against Sirius XM Radio Inc., in a lawsuit alleging that the satellite-radio company violated California copyright law by playing the band's songs without permission.

Why do people share and give away their stuff to strangers? Maybe the answer is in the function of the brain. I find this lecture on the reward system very interesting.

Mario Prata, a Brazilian writer, did an unexpected thing back to 2000. While he was writing a book, internet users watched alive. It was very cool for that time. In 1990, after seven years of teaching at Harvard, Eric Mazur, now Balkanski professor of physics and applied physics, was delivering clear, polished lectures and demonstrations and getting high student evaluations for his introductory Physics 11 course, populated mainly by premed and engineering students who were successfully solving complicated problems. Then he discovered that his success as a teacher "was a complete illusion, a house of cards."

The thing that I liked most about this article (and I really liked it!) was the mention of numerous research studies that have looked into the effects of active learning. Also how Mazur himself collects data on his students' results. The fact that interactive learning can be backed by empirical research only adds to its strength as an effective pedagogical method.

Interesting lecture on privacy and digital identity. Do you want everybody in the plane to have your facebook account? Our personal information is the product the big companies are selling to their advertisers, so they are not so interested in helping us protect that information.

But is there a way to 100% protect our privacy because digital identity in the first place they aim to make us visible without us realizing that we are visible. So when we become visible how then can that be privacy. The story of emperors new clothes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Clothes) clearly relates to the whole issue of privacy and digital identity.

Very interesting aspect of how to protect our personal identify by using selective attributes like age, gender when appropriate and needed by various websites.

I took part in the open ds106 course for a while. I am impressed that it keeps going and morphing over time. The dedication to openness - both the the tools used and the content being produced by the participants - is also impressive. Concepts taught in this course included remix, reuse and re-share are core to the concepts of OER and open knowledge.

I love Flickr for photo sharing. The search for CC licensed images is very helpful and you can also apply the license to your own photos to allow for open sharing and reuse as you prefer.

Learning the language of code empowers a new kind of entrepreneur to make extraordinary creative leaps with their business. There are many examples, such as Andy Puddicombe who has used technology to bring meditation and mindfulness to the world with his business HEADSPSACE, and Lily Cole who has created IMPOSSIBLE - a way of allowing people to utilise the gift economy online.

David Wiley (aka @opencontent) is a long-time advocate for OER and the use of open content in education. He consistently blogs and tweets very relevant resources and information for this group.

I am a great fan of David Wiley. I follow his blog in my feed to make sure I get all his posts. He recently posted a great article about how MOOCs have hurt the open movement, rather than helped it since MOOCs are not using the word 'open' to refer to the same thing - one is open registration/participation versus open content. http://opencontent.org/blog/archives/3557

@mbishon Marvelous article with one theme summed up in one of his sentences..."Their modus operandi has been to copy and paste the 1969 idea of open entry into online courses in 2014. " I have taken lots of MOOCs and they truly vary in quality. The best MOOC I every took was etMOOC that did exactly what David says open education should be--to revise, remix, and redistribute materials available for reuse, thereby adding value.
