The following program description is offered to provide more in-depth information on scientific and technical areas of interest to the Office of High Energy Physics Long-Term Accelerator R&D Stewardship ("Accelerator Stewardship") program. Please note that this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is only for opportunities within the Accelerator Research & Development (R&D) Stewardship mission, and that there is a separate Funding Opportunity Announcement for research and development within the objectives of the High Energy Physics (HEP) program. This Accelerator Stewardship FOA is for R&D activities that may impact HEP, but which predominantly impact other non-HEP applications. The mission of the Accelerator Stewardship program is to support fundamental accelerator science and technology development of relevance to many fields beyond HEP, and to disseminate accelerator knowledge and training to the broad community of accelerator users and providers. This program aims to provide all U.S. students the opportunity to participate in computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) education in their schools at the preK-12 levels. With this solicitation, the National Science Foundation (NSF) focuses on researcher-practitioner partnerships (RPPs) that foster the research and development needed to bring CS and CT to all schools. Specifically, this solicitation aims to provide high school teachers with the preparation, professional development (PD) and ongoing support that they need to teach rigorous computer science courses; preK-8 teachers with the instructional materials and preparation they need to integrate CS and CT into their teaching; and schools and districts the resources needed to define and evaluate multi-grade pathways in CS and CT.

NIJ is seeking applications for research to apply advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to support law enforcement in preventing, responding to, and investigating gang violence, human and drug trafficking, migrant smuggling, and/or child pornography.

The goal of the Rapid Innovation Fund is to facilitate the rapid insertion of innovative technologies into military systems or programs that meet critical national security needs. The DoD seeks mature prototypes for final development, testing, evaluation, and integration. Those selected for award may receive up to $3 million in Rapid Innovation Funding and will have up to two years to perform the work. There is a source selection preference for technologies from small businesses. There are two phases in the source selection process: White paper submission and proposal submission. Proposal submissions are by invitation only.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) to address highly innovative methods and technologies that significantly advance the field of natural products.

USAID has a long history of engaging higher education institutions (HEIs) to achieve development objectives. Together with HEIs, the U.S. Global Development Lab partners with USAID colleagues, other federal agencies, NGOs, and the private sector to increase the scientific knowledge and evidence directed toward addressing USAID's development priorities and improving policy and programming decisions.

The eXploration Systems and Habitation (X-Hab) 2019 Academic Innovation Challenge is a university-level challenge designed to develop strategic partnerships and collaborations with universities. It has been organized to help bridge strategic knowledge gaps and increase knowledge in capabilities and technology risk reduction related to NASA's vision and missions. In 2016, the X-Hab Challenge scope was formally extended to include other areas of Exploration Systems as well as habitation topics. The competition is intended to link with senior- and graduate-level design curricula that emphasize hands-on design, research, development, and manufacturing of functional prototypical subsystems that enable functionality for space habitats and deep space exploration missions. NASA will directly benefit from the challenge by sponsoring the development of innovative concepts and technologies from universities, which will result in novel ideas and solutions that could be applied to exploration. The Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Division will offer multiple awards of $15k - $50k each to design and produce studies or functional products of interest to the AES Division (see Section 3.2, X-Hab Proposal Topic List) as proposed by university teams according to their interests and expertise. The prototypes produced by the university teams (examples of which are shown in Figure 1) may be integrated into existing NASA-built operational prototypes. Universities interested in participating will submit X-Hab proposals, which will be reviewed by technical experts; subsequent down-selection will determine which projects will be funded. X-Hab university teams will be required to complete their products for evaluation by the AES Division in May 2019. Universities may form collaborations to perform as a single distributed project team.

CADS invites research proposals from Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty members for its 2018 Research Fellowships. The fellowships provide support for Miami's faculty on projects broadly related to the area of analytics and data science. CADS will fund one proposal up to $25,000 for one year in duration. Topics should address problems, challenges, or questions that emerge in response to larger, more diverse, higher volume data. Multidisciplinary proposals featuring researchers from different academic divisions are strongly encouraged, with a minimum expectation of researchers representing different academic departments. Proposals comprised only of researchers from within a single academic department will not be considered.

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. Selection takes place in June 2018. The five Fellows will be invited to attend the Course Hero Education Summit in July 2018, where their Fellowships will be announced.

The HFSP supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms; topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience and the interactions between organisms. A clear emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.

First Round of HPC4Mtls Solicitation is Now Open The first HPC4Mtls Program solicitation seeks concept papers that will address key challenges in developing, modifying, and/or qualifying new or modified materials that perform well in severe and complex energy application environments using high performance computing, modeling, simulation, and data analysis. For each of the program offices supporting this solicitation, we provide brief descriptions of their mission and the topics of interest to them. Deadline for concept paper submission is April 19, 2018 at 11:59 pm PDT.

The HPEM Modeling & Effects research and development effort consists of the following areas: understanding the connectivity of infrastructure and mobile targets; understanding the phenomenology of front door effects; developing a predictive effects model; developing a theoretical and empirical basis for HPEM effects ranging from the basic circuit level to the system level effects; empirical effects testing on operational targets as a function of frequency, pulsed duration, and power of the incident HPEM pulse; battle damage assessment; rapid modeling of HPEM system sources and components; improving particle-in-cell code (PIC) capabilities; first principles materials modeling; improving models for electron emission, gas desorption to enhance the predictive capability of virtual prototyping; and developing electromagnetic (EM) algorithms to propagate radio frequency (RF) from platform-specific high power RF systems to targets to assess the performance measures of effective HPEM sources. Sound software engineering and development principles must be employed for all developed software and documentation. Robust software testing, validation, and verification are critical to software development efforts. As appropriate, software must scale to large simulation sizes and be portable to massively parallel computer architecture.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement's (FOA) objective is to invite private industry, universities, water utilities, and other research sponsors to submit proposals to cost share laboratory scale and pilot scale projects that address DWPR program goals and objectives. Funding Group I: Laboratory scale projects are typically bench scale studies involving small flow rates (less than 2 gallons per minute). They are used to determine the viability of a novel process, new materials, or process modifications. Research at this stage often involves a high degree of risk and uncertainty. Funding Group II: Pilot scale projects test a novel process at a sufficiently large scale to determine the technical, practical, and economic viability of the process and are generally preceded by laboratory studies (funded previously by DWPR or others) that demonstrate that the technology works.

The National Science Foundation's (NSF’s) Directorates for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) and Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MPS) recently launched the Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science (TRIPODS) Phase Iprogram with the goal of promoting long-term, interdisciplinary research and training activities that engage theoretical computer scientists, statisticians, and mathematicians in developing the theoretical foundations of data science. Twelve TRIPODS Phase I Institutes were established in FY17 (see https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=242888). The Partnerships between Science and Engineering Fields and the NSF TRIPODS Institutes (TRIPODS + X) solicitation seeks to expand the scope of the TRIPODS program beyond the foundations community by engaging researchers across other NSF disciplines and the TRIPODS research teams in collaborative activities. TRIPODS + X projects will foster relationships between researchers in science & engineering domains and foundational data scientists by leveraging existing NSF investments in the TRIPODS organizations. Working in concert with a TRIPODS organization, a TRIPODS + X project would focus on data-driven research challenges motivated by applications in one or more science and engineering domains or other activities aimed at building robust data science communities.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi announces an open competition through the Public Diplomacy Grants program for a Cooperative Agreement to implement one or both activities of a "TechCamp" project focused on growing women-owned social enterprises in India and Pakistan which includes a workshop and follow-on. This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) enhances the DPA Title III effort by providing to potential offerors information and procedures necessary to identify domestic industrial base projects, potentially meeting the DPA Title III criteria, by using the white paper and proposal formats. Project Announcements for a specific domestic industrial base shortfall, issued subsequent to this BAA, is the main method to initiate a call for white papers, leading to an evaluation and potential request for full proposals. Project Announcement #1 is included with this initial posting of the BAA. Consistent with the law, the DPA Title III Program has derived three broad Focus Areas for potential projects. The Focus Areas are: Sustainment of Critical Production, Commercialization of Research and Development Investments and Scaling of Emerging Technologies.

The Formal Methods in the Field (FMitF) program aims to bring together researchers in formal methods with researchers in other areas of computer and information science and engineering to jointly develop rigorous and reproducible methodologies for designing and implementing correct-by-construction systems and applications with provable guarantees. FMitF encourages close collaboration between two groups of researchers

With the goal of encouraging research independence immediately upon obtaining one's first academic position after receipt of the PhD, the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) will award grants to initiate the course of one's independent research. Understanding the critical role of establishing that independence early in one's career, it is expected that funds will be used to support untenured faculty or research scientists (or equivalent) in their first three years in a primary academic position after the PhD, but not more than a total of five years after completion of their PhD. One may not yet have received any other grants or contracts in the Principal Investigator (PI) role from any department, agency, or institution of the federal government, including from the CAREER program or any other program, post-PhD, regardless of the size of the grant or contract, with certain exceptions noted below. Serving as co-PI, Senior Personnel, Postdoctoral Fellow, or other Fellow does not count against this eligibility rule. Grants, contracts, or gifts from private companies or foundations; state, local, or tribal governments; or universities do not count against this eligibility rule.
