Interventions supported by this FOA are intended to provide caregivers with care training, promote coping skills, and ultimately help them manage care. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to establish research teams of the Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) Consortium to conduct research whose overall goals are: 1) to improve SCLC therapeutics, focusing on understanding how the molecular vulnerabilities of this cancer could be used to develop targeted agent combinations; and/or, 2) to gain a better understanding of the rapid development of clinical resistance to drug and radiation therapy. This FOA focuses on two of the five research priorities identified in the National Cancer Institute's 2014 Scientific Framework for Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). Additional priorities of the Framework are stated in this FOA, as studies are expected to use or develop state-of-the-art research tools and omic profiles to identify therapeutic strategies that are relevant to human SCLC disease progression and resistance. The research supported by this FOA will be performed by individual research teams who are expected to collaborate with one another and with a central SCLC Coordinating Center. A third component of the SCLC Consortium focuses on prevention and early detection of SCLC.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) supports the development of new exploratory research in cancer diagnosis, treatment, imaging, symptom/toxicity, and prevention clinical trials; correlative studies associated with clinical trials; novel cancer therapeutic, symptom/toxicity, and preventive agent development, radiotherapy development activities, and mechanism-driven combinations; and innovative preclinical studies--including the use of new clinically-relevant models and imaging technologies--which could lead to first-in-human clinical trials. The R21 mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. These studies may involve considerable risk, but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of cancer research (pre-clinical or clinical).

Leveraging the knowledge, tools, experimental models and reagents in neuroscience research to uncover novel mechanisms used by the nervous system to promote tumor initiation, progression and metastasis can ultimately inform key areas of cancer research including the prevention and treatment of non-central nervous system tumors.

These non-tenure track scientists, such as researchers within a research program, are vital to sustaining the biomedical research enterprise. It is anticipated that only exceptional scientists who want to pursue research within the context of an existing NCI-funded cancer research program, but not serve as independent investigators, will be competitive for this award.

The Research Specialist Award is designed to encourage the development of stable research career opportunities for exceptional scientists who want to continue to pursue research within the context of an existing NCI-funded basic, translational, clinical, or population science cancer research program, but not serve as independent investigators. These scientists, such as researchers within a core/shared resource/central scientific support, are vital to sustaining the biomedical research enterprise. The Research Specialist Award is intended to provide salary support and sufficient autonomy so that individuals are not solely dependent on NCI grants held by others for career continuity.   

In support of this mission, St. Baldrick's is inviting applications for its Fellowship Awards. Through the program, grants of up to $75,000 per year for up to two years, with an additional 30 percent for fringe benefits (total yearly maximum of $97,500), will be awarded in support of pediatric oncology research. (There is an opportunity for one additional year of funding based on need and demonstrated accomplishment.) Fellows must have completed at least two years of training prior to becoming a St. Baldrick's Fellow.

These non-tenure track scientists, such as researchers within a research program, are vital to sustaining the biomedical research enterprise. It is anticipated that only exceptional scientists who want to pursue research within the context of an existing NCI-funded cancer research program, but not serve as independent investigators, will be competitive for this award.

The FY19 KCRP Translational Research Partnership Award supports partnerships between clinicians and research scientists that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in kidney cancer toward clinical applications. This award supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators to address a central problem or question in kidney cancer in a manner that would be less readily achievable through separate efforts. One partner in the collaboration must be a research scientist and the other must be a clinician. It should be clear that both have had equal intellectual input in the design of the research project. Multi-institutional partnerships are encouraged. At least one member of the partnership must have experience either in kidney cancer research or kidney cancer patient care. Inclusion of experts from outside the kidney cancer field is encouraged. A proposed project in which the clinical partner merely supplies tissue samples or access to patients will not meet the intent of this award mechanism.

The FY19 KCRP Idea Development Award is intended to support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches, based on scientifically sound evidence, to move toward the KCRP vision of eliminating kidney cancer. The research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and a well-developed and articulated research approach relevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, other military beneficiaries, and the American public. Personnel on the proposed team should have a strong background in kidney cancer research.

The Conquer Cancer Foundation was founded by cancer doctors at the American Society of Clinical Oncology to support dramatic advances in the prevention, treatment, and cures of all types of cancer. To that end, CCF is accepting applications for its Global Oncology Young Investigator Award. Through the program, a single grant of up to $50,000 will be awarded to an early-career investigator in support of global oncology research. "Global oncology" as defined by the foundation implies an approach to the practice of oncology that acknowledges the reality of limited resources in most parts of the world. Projects therefore need to be a research exercise - identifying training models, researching their outcomes, analyzing the outcomes of those models to select the most effective curriculum, and/or researching the cost of creating sustainable models where they do not exist.
