Honoring the legacy of Paul A. Marks, MD, President Emeritus of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a distinguished scientist, the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research recognizes outstanding young investigators who have made significant contributions to increase the understanding of cancer or improve the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research. The Paul Marks Prize is awarded every other year to up to three investigators. The first recipients were named in 2001. The winners will present their work at a scientific symposium at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and share a cash award of $150,000. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. Nominees must be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline, April 30, 2013. Prize winners will be announced in Fall 2013.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

Harnessing principles from chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field still in its infancy. Throughout the past decade, nanoparticles and specifically nanoparticle drug delivery systems, have emerged at the forefront of cancer therapies. Nanotechnology has helped to design and fabricate micro-scale devices, including nanoparticle drug delivery systems able to target tumors and other cancerous tissue. Nanotechnology is also being explored to generate other novel techniques to design biomarkers, immunotherapy, and vaccine development for cancer. Featuring keynote address by Nobel Laureate Robert Y. Tsien, PhD, this 2.5-day conference will discuss: nanodiagnostics for cancer biomarkers and imaging, nanoparticle toxicity and safety; nanovaccines and nanoimmunotherapeutics; the challenges of targeted delivery in tumors; and nanoparticle-based gene therapy. A discussion of these topics will serve to enhance the translation of research discoveries into improved cancer diagnostic and treatment strategies. Call for Early Career Investigator and Underrepresented Minority Travel Fellowships The deadline for submission of applications is Wednesday, April 24, 2013. A small number of fellowships will be made available to qualified early career investigators and early career investigators from underrepresented minorities.

 The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award is designed to provide support for the next generation of exceptionally creative thinkers with "high-risk/high-reward" ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. The Innovation Award is specifically designed to provide funding to extraordinary early career researchers who have an innovative new idea but lack sufficient preliminary data to obtain traditional funding. It is not designed to fund incremental advances. The research supported by the award must be novel, exceptionally creative and, if successful, have the strong potential for high impact in the cancer field.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to release a NASA Research Announcement (NRA), for Ground-based Studies for the Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) in the area of space radiobiology of cancer and neuronal risks utilizing beams of high energy ions simulating space radiation at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York.

BCAN's Young Investigator Awards seek to fund those researchers who may be working in basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, bioengineering or any other scientific or research field, but are also working in a research environment capable of supporting transformational bladder cancer research.

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grant for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research who have promising ideas or research approaches that can be applied to carcinoid tumor and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research.

The Fight Colorectal Cancer-AACR Fellowship, in memory of Lisa Dubow represents a joint effort to encourage and support a postdoctoral or clinical research fellow to conduct translational or clinical research that focuses on novel THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES for late-stage metastatic colorectal cancer. This grant will support a project designed to lead to individualized therapeutic options for treatment or the development of promising new cancer therapeutics for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Emphasis will be placed on proposed projects which will translate into clinical applications within a few year period, including those with predictive biomarker studies.

The Children's Tumor Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the 2013 Young Investigator Award (YIA) application process. Online submission of the Pre-Applications is possible from January 14 to January 25, 2013. CTF's longest running program, YIAs provide two-year awards for young scientists early in their careers, bringing them into the NF field and helping to establish them as independent investigators.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications for projects that bridge biological mechanism to population level scales. By incorporating insights and data from one end of the cancer research spectrum into the framework of the other, projects should be able to cross-validate data gathered at different scales, and explore links between basic biology, population science, and potential health applications in treatment, prevention, diagnosis, and/or screening. Proposed projects should pose a challenging cancer research question that can be addressed by connecting these two ends of the research spectrum that would be difficult to address or explain through biological or epidemiological investigation alone. Only a single cohesive project integrating aspects from these two areas is allowed in each application.

The purpose of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program is to develop the pool of a diverse group of highly trained undergraduate and graduate students who go on to research careers and will be available to participate in NIH-funded research. The program provides institutional grants to research-intensive institutions that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to increase students' academic preparation and skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has issued new Requests for Proposals through its Translational Research Program to support researchers in six critical areas of unmet medical need. The RFPs mark LLS's aggressive and proactive approach to addressing the challenge of improving outcomes for cancer patients with particularly urgent needs. The LLS Translational Research Program is designed to help accelerate the movement of promising discoveries from lab to clinic. The goal of translational research is to reduce the time between laboratory findings and actual treatment. The society aims to stimulate more academic research in the following areas: new immunotherapeutics for patients with acute myelogenous leukemia; novel therapeutics for patients with non-cutaneous T-cell malignancies; introduction of novel agents in the treatment of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma; therapies for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes who have failed hypomethylating agents; therapies for new targets such as bromodomains, methylation, and other epigenetic approaches for patients with high-risk myeloma; and research that addresses long-term and late effects of blood cancer therapies.

The AACR Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award is open to tenure-track scientists at the level of assistant professor who are in the first five years of a faculty appointment (at the start of the grant term). Proposed research projects may focus on research in cancer etiology, diagnosis, treatment or prevention (basic, translational or clinical cancer research). The award provides a one-year grant of $75,000 for direct research expenses; which may include the salary and benefits of the grant recipient, postdoctoral or clinical research fellows and/or research assistants, equipment, research/laboratory supplies, and limited travel for the grant recipient.

The Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) is soliciting grant applications for the calendar year 2013. There will be two categories of awards: Pediatric Brain Tumor Grant Awards Our standard grant request for pediatric brain tumor awards will continue as usual. We anticipate funding up to three (3) research proposals that are a maximum of two years in duration. Funding requests cannot exceed $30,000/year or a maximum of $60,000 over the course of the award. Pilocytic Astrocytoma Award We have specific funds for one, 1-year research proposal related to pilocytic astrocytoma. The funding request for this award can be up to a maximum of $50,000.
