The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Award supports exceptionally talented recent doctoral or medical graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral training and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Those individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers. Applicants for this award must exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research. Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral fellow is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the project narrative, training plan, and other application components with appropriate guidance from the mentor. While the PI is not required to have previous experience in breast cancer research, the proposed project and training must focus on breast cancer. Applications must emphasize the PI's high potential for success in becoming an independent breast cancer researcher based on his/her qualifications, achievements (including first-author publications), and letters of recommendation. The mentor (or co-mentor, if applicable) must possess the appropriate expertise and experience in breast cancer, to include publications and active peer reviewed breast cancer funding, and clearly demonstrate a commitment to guiding the PI's research and training. If the mentor is not an experienced breast cancer researcher, then formal co-mentorship by an established breast cancer researcher is required. The application must include information about the mentor's experience in conducting innovative research and how he/she intends to support the PI's endeavors in breast cancer. 

The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

The NIH encourages institutions that seek to engage undergraduate students in innovative mentored research training programs to submit applications for cooperative agreement awards through the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative, one of three new Common Fund initiatives that together aim to enhance diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research workforce. Addressing a major leakage point in the research workforce pipeline, BUILD awards are intended to support the design and implementation of innovative programs, strategies and approaches to transform undergraduate research training and mentorship. BUILD awards will also support institutional and faculty development to further strengthen undergraduate research training environments.

The OCRP Ovarian Cancer Academy, which was initially created in FY09, is intended to be a unique, interactive virtual academy providing intensive mentoring, national networking, and a peer group for junior faculty. The overarching goal of the Ovarian Cancer Academy is to develop successful, highly productive ovarian cancer researchers in a collaborative research training environment. The current Ovarian Cancer Academy is a virtual career development and research training platform consisting of nine Early-Career Investigator/Designated Mentor pairs from different institutions and one Academy Dean. The Academy Dean serves as a resource for the Early-Career Investigators and Mentors, assesses the progress of the Early-Career Investigators, and facilitates communication and collaboration among all of the Early-Career Investigators and Mentors.

The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enable promising predoctoral students to obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training must reflect the applicants dissertation research project and is expected to clearly enhance the individuals potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist.

In an effort to confront the crisis arising from a growing dearth of physician-scientists, Damon Runyon wishes to encourage more physicians to pursue research careers. To do so, the Foundation is establishing a pilot program designed to recruit outstanding U.S. Specialty Board-eligible physicians into cancer research careers by providing them with the opportunity for a protected research training experience under the mentorship of a highly qualified and gifted mentor after they have completed all of their clinical training.

The purpose of this individual postdoctoral research training fellowship is to enhance the research training of promising postdoctoral candidates who have the potential to become productive, independent investigators in health services research, with a research interest in areas and priorities relevant to the mission of AHRQ.

The AACR-Bayer Stimulating Therapeutic Advances through Research Training (START) Grants represent an exciting initiative to encourage and support collaboration between academia and industry. This novel model provides support for three years to postdoctoral and clinical research fellows working on a mentored cancer research project and includes one year spent on site at a Bayer facility. The combined academic and industry training provided through this program will be invaluable to young investigators, allowing them to attain a comprehensive research experience. Projects must have direct applicability and relevance to clinical translation and development in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.

The mission of the American Society for Hematology, the world's largest professional organization dedicated to the causes and treatment of blood disorders, is to further the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the blood, bone marrow, and immunologic, hemostatic and vascular systems through the promotion of research, clinical care, education, training, and advocacy in hematology. To that end, ASH is accepting proposals from hematologists whose research would not otherwise be accomplished due to cuts in NIH funding. Established in January 2013, the long-term goal of the program is to help sustain recipients' research and contribute to their retention in hematology investigation. The Bridge Grants program will provide at least thirty one-year awards annually, in the amount of $150,000 each, to ASH members who applied for an NIH R01 grant or equivalent but were denied funding due to budget cuts. Grants will support projects in basic, translational, patient-oriented, or outcomes-based research.

The proposed Funding Opportunity Announcement supports the provision of technical assistance and training to National Comprehensive Cancer Control grantees and their coalitions by national organizations with demonstrated capacities and expertise in chronic disease prevention and health promotion. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.

The purpose of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program is to develop the pool of a diverse group of highly trained undergraduate and graduate students who go on to research careers and will be available to participate in NIH-funded research. The program provides institutional grants to research-intensive institutions that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to increase students' academic preparation and skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences.

TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTICS: The goal of the PhRMA Foundation's Translational Medicine and Therapeutics Program is to promote the development and use of experimental and computational methods in an integrative approach towards clinical needs in diagnosis, treatment and prevention. This can involve enhanced understanding of human biological and disease processes but requires a strong translational component. This program will support the concepts of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics as defined by the Foundation: "Translational medicine and therapeutics is a discipline focused on bridging experimental and computational technologies and discoveries in the research laboratory to their application in clinical practice. Examples of research components include activities in molecular and cellular biology, pathophysiology, systems biology, bioinformatics, modeling and simulation, and other quantitative sciences to connect basic biological concepts and entities to directly address unmet medical needs. The goals are to use clinical observation as the basis for hypothesis generation to further basic research and to efficiently advance the product of basic research to patients." The American Association for Cancer Research established this award in 2007 in honor of Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), for her exemplary leadership of the AACR as its chief executive officer; for her sustained, outstanding work in fostering research, scholarly communications, education and training, science policy and public education; and for her extraordinary dedication and contributions to the conquest of cancer. This award recognizes a true champion of cancer research, an individual who embodies the sustained commitment of Margaret Foti to the prevention and cure of cancer. The award is given to an individual whose leadership and extraordinary achievements in cancer research or in support of cancer research have made a major impact on the field. Such achievements include contributions to the acceleration of progress in cancer research, raising national or international awareness of cancer research, or other demonstrations of a sustained commitment to the conquest of cancer.
