    The National Research Action Plan (NRAP) responding to Executive Order 13625, Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families (August 31, 2012), lays out a framework to ensure that Government funding agencies work together to further our knowledge and diagnostic/therapeutic capabilities with regard to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), TBI, suicide, and related injuries by following longitudinal cohorts of Service members and Veterans. The DoD and VA ORD meet this directive through continued collaboration on and coordination of research efforts in the areas of TBI and PTSD. Additionally, recommendations from the DoD Blast Injury Research Program Coordinating Office's November 2015 International State of the Science Meeting (Does Repeated Blast- Related Trauma Contribute to the Development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)?) included pursuing longitudinal studies to evaluate links between blast-related TBI with CTE. While a number of longitudinal efforts are ongoing, the DoD and VA seek to pursue a mechanism to collaboratively streamline and continue longitudinal studies of mTBI in active duty and Veteran populations. The objective of this effort is to solicit a single Consortium of a large longitudinal study and supporting sub-studies to analyze a large TBI cohort to include Service members, Veterans, and relevant populations.

DoD Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Award - 0 views

    The OPORP Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Award (OPORA) is being offered for the first time in FY14. It is intended to support research that evaluates the comparative effectiveness of and functional outcomes associated with prosthetic and orthotic clinical interventions and/or other rehabilitation interventions for Service Members and Veterans who have undergone limb salvage or limb amputation. The goal is to improve our understanding of and ultimately advance the implementation of the most effective prescriptions for prosthetic and orthotic devices, treatment, rehabilitation, and secondary health effect prevention options for patients, clinicians, other caregivers, and policymakers. Proposed projects should be designed to provide outcomes data regarding orthotic and prosthetic devices, and/or related clinical interventions and must include the anticipated effect on patient care metrics. Collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged, as are joint Department of Defense (DoD)-VA studies, including longitudinal outcome studies. Studies are sought that: * Compare different patient care approaches. * Include patient-centric outcome assessments. * Have the potential to generate new knowledge that can be developed into new clinical practice guidelines, and/or new prescription algorithms for prosthetic and orthotic devices. * Have the potential to develop new technology for improved prosthetic and orthotic devices, therefore improving patient outcomes. * Provide information on quality of life, reintegration, and/or return to duty/return to work as it pertains to those patients who use a prosthetic or orthotic device due to limb trauma. All applications must demonstrate direct relevance to Service Members and Veterans with traumatic extremity injury and/or amputation using prosthetics and orthotic devices.     It is estimated that more than 30 million Americans over the age of 12 years have hearing loss in both ears and an estimated 48 million have hearing loss in at least one ear. The most recent data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) indicates that there are 1.1 million Veterans with Service-connected disability due to hearing loss. The HRRP will fund innovative research that has the potential to maximize operational performance, medical readiness, and quality of life for Service members, Veterans, and others living with significant auditory system injuries.

    The FY20 GWIRP Therapeutic/Biomarker Trial Award supports large-scale, pivotal (e.g., Phase IIb-III) clinical trials that will revolutionize the clinical management of GWI. The Therapeutic/Biomarker Trial Award targets the "Confirmation" phase of the research pipeline as outlined in Section II.A.2. The proposed research should lead to an approach that is fundamentally better than interventions already approved or in clinical development. Objective biomarkers to measure the biological effect of an investigational therapeutic or predictive/cohort-selective biomarkers that indicate whether a specific therapy will be effective in an individual Gulf War Veteran or Gulf War Veteran subgroup must be included in the trial design. Development of markers for the purposes of diagnosis, prognosis, or measurement of disease progression without consideration of the therapeutic development process will not be supported.

    The Idea Development Award promotes new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward eradicating deaths from lung cancer. Applications should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at military treatment facilities, military labs, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged. New Investigators: The FY16 Idea Development Award mechanism encourages applications from independent investigators in the early stages of their careers (i.e., within 10 years of their first faculty appointment, or equivalent). The New Investigator category is designed to allow applicants early in their faculty appointments to compete for funding separately from established investigators. Applications from New Investigators and Established Investigators will be peer and programmatically reviewed separately. Principal Investigators (PIs) using the New Investigator category are strongly encouraged to strengthen their applications by collaborating with investigators experienced in lung cancer research and/or possessing other relevant expertise. It is the responsibility of the applicant to describe how the included collaboration will augment the PI's expertise to best address the research question.     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research project grant (R01) applications to leverage large-scale, real-world data from electronic health records (EHRs) from a variety of systems (e.g., the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrative claims, as well as public or private health care systems and networks) to understand risk, onset, course, and impact of treatments and services for mental and neurological disorders and to identify promising new mental health and neurological disorders research. Through its Community Impact Grants program, the foundation will award grants of up to $5,000 (in the form of Home Depot gift cards that can be used to purchase tools, materials, and services) for projects aimed at repairing, modifying, weatherizing, or otherwise improving low-income and/or transitional housing or community facilities.     The FY17 KCRP Concept Award supports highly innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking novel concepts in kidney cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support an incremental progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Preliminary data are not allowed. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation relevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, other military beneficiaries, and the American public. Applications must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of kidney cancer or develop an innovative and novel course of investigation. Research completed through a Concept Award may generate sufficient preliminary data to enable the PI to prepare an application for future research. The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 KCRP Concept Award will not exceed $75,000.
