Designed by Canada's National Arts Centre, the music section offers a wealth of information on composers, instruments, the orchestra, and other musical topics, with games and activities to deepen understanding. It also has separate pages for teachers, students, parents, and artists that have different resources.

This site provides a comprehensive overview of music theory topics. It would be an excellent resource for a general music class or for beginning music theory.

The Library of Congress has a plethora of information and media related to music education. Within the archives of the Library of Congress are recordings of folk songs, articles about music in America, and podcasts. One of these podcast collections is about Music and the Brain where research related to music and how it affects the brain is reviewed and discussed. This is an excellent resource for music advocacy. It is also a great resource for better understanding music learning.

A music teacher blogs an idea for evaluation for kindergarteners. Mine don't do a winter concert, so I'd have to edit it, but another great way to incorporate evaluating (responding) with music in a simple way that young children can understand.

So excited to learn about this fantastic tool. One can turn video into lessons with pop-up text boxes and multiple choice questions. What a great way "engage and deepen understanding".

A great piece of software geared toward engaging private rehearsal times. This is a must have for band & orchestra teachers.

Pandora radio offers free customized radio stations that play songs relating to certain genres or artists. Listening is essential for musical development and understanding.  Students can access everything from jazz and classical, to Latin and opera.  

The lessons found here are for integrating popular music study into general music curricula. The lessons are all standards-aligned and are almost entirely historical, cultural, sociological, and musicological in nature. The lessons can also be integrated into social studies curricula. There are many opportunities in all of these lessons for students to embark on music and cultural research to enhance and deepen their understanding of the music they are learning to play/sing/perform.

Article written to support the use of technology to compliment instruction and enhance student learning instead of technology for technology sake. Teachers should use social media cites, e.g., blogs, to facilitate discussion and feedback from students, create online PLNs. The cross curricular benefit is increasing writing facility and literacy. A couple of concerns are cyberbullying and parents who may question how much learning is taking place with social media. Educators can help others, including students, understand that music learning can take place outside of the classroom through social media and broaden the audience.

This is a discussion by New York Times columnist, David Brooks, and Kathy Fletcher, and the director of Turnaround Arts Initiative about the important work that Turnaround Arts does through the strategic use of the arts. The discussion talks about how music facilitates brain development, why certain things in music leave people fascinated, and what magic music brings to emotion. The discussion also unfolds how the arts, and music education in particular opens the student's mind to memorisation. David Brooks says "Students understand better when topics are introduced through music". I agree with that because most students become more alert when a topic is introduced through song and it fosters the interest of students. Therefore we need arts to succeed in education. A lot of artists came from struggling backgrounds so when they talk to children that would like to succeed in the music world but are frightened that they'll never make it, they tell them "I know what you are going through but you can make it". This encourages those children to push on and excel in the arts. Kathy Fletcher says music boosts critical thinking and confidence which is ideal for students and they end up excelling in all other fields. The arts connect us all through music in a way that music created is shared all around the world. Partnerships are created to perform music and people come together to listen to music. This makes us one.

A youtube channel that focuses on providing short lessons on jazz history/tradition, instrumental technique, and the jazz language.

This YouTube channel is a great resources for jazz educators in both a private and ensemble setting. The videos cover the whole jazz orchestra, providing videos of technique as well as ways to develop students' improvisational skills.

Jazz Academy is a YouTube library with free lessons on jazz for educators and students. Lessons range from the instrument specific techniques, jazz history, master classes with professional musicians, and lessons on different styles of music. From these videos, students receive important information from professional jazz musicians. As a jazz educator, there are also videos that improve my understanding of specific techniques and styles.

Morton Subotnick's Creating Music has a variety of music games and activities that would be suited for an elementary curriculum. I would like to use this website as a center in my classroom, to allow students to explore simple music creation and music listening.

Creating music is a site preferably for younger learners. It provides practice on pitches, timbres, ear training, and memorization.

Younger musicians can use this website to understand pitch, hearing music and create basic compositions. There is an iPad application that goes along with it and it is completely free and a great educational tool for younger children.

A great website for step-by-step theory instruction, exercises, and quizzes. This website would be great to offering out-of-class instruction or assistance to students who may need extra help. The instruction is organized by concepts (ex. key signatures, chords, etc) and gives helpful tips and tricks to understand the concept being taught.

This article discusses tips for jazz ensemble directors. It covers how the band could be set up and the importance of each section. It covers a key concept of having your students listen to jazz to understand it.

This is a collection of authentic field recordings around the world. These recordings can be used to give teachers and students a deeper understanding of a folk song's musical and cultural context.

Resource for UF Masters in Music Education. Google classroom has become an incredible resource for me. I didn't fully understand the potential that the program offers but it truly takes a lot of administrative work off my desk. Google Forms will create student progress spread sheets. Students can record an mp3 file of themselves through a program like GarageBand and submit to the classroom for assessment. I can add lectures and resources to my class to allow them to study for written exams.
