What better way to involve students--regardless of musical talent and ability--in the music-making experience than to integrate technology into our everyday classroom instruction? Blogger Ethan Hein provides his audience with seven sample lessons that use music technology as the means through which to teach music-specific content; among the examples he provides are assignments for making music with loops, MIDI, and found sound. By adapting any of these lessons for use in our own classrooms, Hein is convinced that we can engage and involve all students in the music-making experience.

The Sight Reading Factory generates excerpts of music based on parameters entered by the user. It is especially useful for practicing specific areas of music-reading skills (e.g. bass clef, odd-meters, difficult rhythms), or reinforcing general concepts of reading traditionally-notated music. While the site is good for the practice of mechanics, one might argue that robotically-created music is less useful for the development of musicality (or that computer-composed music isn't "music" at all). Excerpts can be generated for individuals singing or playing instruments, or for ensembles. There is also a section for solfege pattern practice. This resource creates sheet music excerpts for reading practice, without much regard to form or structure--it does not generate full works of literature for performance.

Her podcasts at times include guests that share their insights on a particular topic. The podcasts are also available on SoundCloud which makes them accessible without having to use the website.

SmartMusic has interactive, web-based editions of many popular instrumental, band, chorus, and orchestra method books, as well as a massive collection of sheet music. Students can listen, loop, record and submit pieces they are working on. A neat feature of SmartMusic is that students can click on a single note and hear how it is supposed to sound, and how to finger that note on their instrument. Students can adjust tempo, play with a metronome, use a tuner to check pitch, and more. A paid subscription allows teachers to create online classrooms for assigning and assessing work, and have access to the entire SmartMusic catalog.

SmartMusic is music learning software for music teachers and students. It makes music learning easy and fun. Students can continue their learning outside school. Teachers can also assess students outside the school wall. Smart music is good for rehearsals because a student can rehearse at home when the teacher is listening in and correcting him/her from anywhere else. It is easy to access and a good resource for music classes.

Novice teachers could benefit from having a range of ideas and helpful tips available to them. Also, veteran teachers could find some new ideas to incorporate into the classroom form lesson to decorations. The blog posts on the website are thoughtful and meant to be advice to those that chose to read them.

There is also a list of various resources that are available from other websites that pertain to the various blogs available.

On and off the Podium is a blog centered website focusing on both administrative resources and classroom pedagogical concepts. The purpose of the website is to share ideas and concepts that the author has used in her classroom. There is a wealth of information available specifically on recruitment for middle school performing arts teachers (band, orchestra, and choir). Visitors have access to materials that the author has shared that coincide with the blogs on the website. There is also a list of recommended websites that the author recommends for visitors to check out associated with music education.

After using this website for a graduate level course in American Vernacular Music History, I was really impressed with it's use for educators. Organize music history in a timeline view to allow students to click and learn more on their own.

This is a very comprehensive website with articles dealing with just about any topic a band director would ever need when it comes to the classroom. There are instrument specific sections as well as help with instrument repair. I found composer interviews as well as information regarding motivation of students to fundraise.

The purpose of this website is to compile links to access all things band director related. The website includes information and inspiration for topics ranging from fundraising to baton technique. Most of, if not all of the information is compiled to benefit students either directly or indirectly in their classrooms.

This website feature excellent resources for educators related to "the Blues". PBS offers various resources for classroom instruction including lesson, recordings, and other resources to provide students with a better understand of this style of music. This website would be beneficial for general music and music appreciation.

This is a great site to help students practice sight reading. There are many sight reading examples and the program is very user friendly and helps engage the kids.
