Channel surfing in today's TV Everywhere world - FierceCable - 0 views

  •
This article touches on the need for services that make it easy for viewers to discover content from multiple sources: TV, online, social, VOD, etc. Specifcally, the article mentions a service called LocateTV, which lets users track actors, tv shows, movies, etc. and notifies them when they are on-air. Could be useful for something like the Verizon/NFL tie-up to track talent, etc.

End of the Line for Flo TV? | Wireless Week - 0 views

  • Qualcomm is giving up on the direct-to-consumer portion of its Flo TV mobile television subsidiary, according to a report from paidcontent.org.
  • AT&T and Verizon Wireless offer mobile television services through Flo TV, Flo itself sells a stand-alone personal television and Audiovox offers in-car entertainment systems equipped with Flo TV.
  • Analyst Jeff Kagan believes Qualcomm decided to cancel Flo TV's consumer-facing service because it wasn't profitable.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • The reported move comes after Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs voiced dissatisfaction earlier this year with Flo TV's performance and suggested that the company's technology could be used to provide carriers with datacasting service instead of consumer-facing mobile television service.

Can Best Buy's Music Cloud Beat Apple To The iPunch? | paidContent - 0 views

  •
"Best Buy is also expanding its services up in the sky. Today it has launched a new music streaming offering-appropriately enough called Best Buy Music Cloud. On the surface, it sounds strikingly similar to what Apple will be offering users in its iCloud music service, but with a few differences:"

Retailers Encourage Shoppers to Buy Online and Pick Up In-Store - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • More than half of the sales from Walmart.com are now picked up at Walmart stores, Mr. Anderson said.
  • Walmart says the majority of in-store purchases are made with cash or debit cards, and that about 15 percent are made with credit cards.
  • Walmart noticed that a different set of customers also found the service appealing. About 40 percent of the customers who paid with cash when ordering online ended up using noncash options, like a credit card or check, when they arrived at the store. They simply had not wanted to provide that financial information online.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • The service already accounts for 2 percent of Walmart.com’s sales.
  • Sears, which has long offered store pickup for items bought on the Web, added a drive-through service a few months ago that allows customers to return or exchange purchases without leaving their cars.
  • He said that the online orders for in-store pickup also tended to be much larger than typical in-store purchases, and that customers who picked up orders in the store visited about 50 percent more often than customers who shopped only in the stores.
  • That follows the company’s decision three years ago to combine its online and offline inventories, so that if nordstrom.com was sold out of a size 8 Nicole Miller shift but a store in Los Angeles had the item in stock, the store would ship the item to the e-commerce customer.
  • further toward the “showroom” model — carrying lots of products for shoppers to see and test, but asking customers to buy the merchandise via the stores’ Web sites or apps.
  • “You will definitely start to see online-only players open stores,” she said.

How smart videos can change the face of customer service - Tech News and Analysis - 0 views

  •
But in the last several months, AT&T has been reducing the number and length of calls to its call centers by relying on so-called smart videos from New York City-based SundaySky. The videos are personalized tutorials that are built on the fly using pre-scripted clips mixed with the subscriber's own data. The system works off a video template that incorporates visual elements, narration and integrated information from a user's account. Users end up seeing a video bill that addresses them, acknowledges their recent account activity and leads them through their biggest billing questions.

Amazon Launches "Singles": Dating Service For Lonely Stories | Fast C... - 0 views

  • Singles is not a dating service for lonely e-book fans. It's a (somewhat confusing) attempt by Amazon to inject a whole new level of creativity into the Kindle, but what it's actually all about is short stories. Singles as in music singles, you see -- letting you buy a single song rather than the whole album. Get it?"Less than 10,000 words or more than 50,000: That is the choice writers have generally faced for more than a century--works either had to be short enough for a magazine article or long enough to deliver the 'heft' required for book marketing and distribution. But in many cases, 10,000 to 30,000 words (roughly 30 to 90 pages) might be the perfect, natural length to lay out a single killer idea." That's how Amazon introduces the concept.

ABC "Unofficially" Partners with Twitter-Alternative StatusNet - 0 views

  • ABC News Radio and StatusNet, the open-source microblogging service that serves as the foundation for identi.ca, have "unofficially" partnered to unveil a newswire for the radio service. While the partnership may not be "official", it is yet another vote of confidence in the Twitter-alternative and the open Web.
  • For now, Patterson says the site will be used for news distribution and audience engagement - the typical use of systems like Twitter and StatusNet - and will be available at abcnewsradio.fm. Earlier this summer, StatusNet received a push in the form of $2.3 million and just recently the company introduced an iPhone app. The decision of a major media outlet to use their service is, in our eyes, a major vote of confidence in something other than the norm.

AdGenesis Inks Reward-Based Ads Deal - 1 views

  •
The company is an ad-matching service that's based on the idea that people will sit through Web video ads to get a reward like a coupon or discount from the brand.  Founded in 2009, AdGenesis is announcing today that it has linked up with newspaper insert Parade, which it hopes will be the first of many publishers to white-label the service. The way it works: The consumer signs up for the service on Parade.com, where it's called Parade Video Rewards. When she meets the criteria of a participating advertiser based on buying habits she's shared, she gets an e-mail containing a link to the video ad (typically a 15- or 30-second ad) on the host's site. Once she verifies that she's watched the ad, she gets a reward, at which point the advertiser is also charged. The partner site gets traffic and a cut of the ad revenue.
