"Like seemingly every startup currently exploring an ad-supported business model, Waze has gone native for its ad platform. Typically startups wade into advertising by working directly with brands then erecting a self-serve platform down the road. Waze sped things up. The company began testing ads in its U.S. app over the summer, working directly with Zipcar, Best Buy and a number of fuel brands and convenience store chains; at launch it has added Procter & Gamble, Dunkin' Donuts, Wyndham Hotels, Whole Foods, Jamba Juice, CircleK and Kum & Go to its advertiser roster.
The direct sales channel continues, but Waze has also set up a self-serve platform for its most basic ad units. The self-serve platform operates on an auction model with floor prices set at $1 per thousand impressions. In addition to a branded search result, marketers can pay to plot branded pins at their locations on the Waze map. When users click on these branded pins, they can click a link to the company's website, a number to call the location or-borrowing the idea of drive-to advertising popularized by driving navigation company Telenav-a button that would navigate them to the location."
Chevrolet is making a radical departure from its approach to turn-by-turn navigation services. After using parent company's General Motors' OnStar service since its inception, Chevy is offering a competing alternative in its Sonic and Spark automobile lines. Called BringGo, it's an integrated smartphone-dashboard system - Chevy's first attempt at a bring-your-own-maps nav service to any of its vehicles.
Georgie is built specifically to help blind users navigate day-to-day obstacles such as taking bus rides, reading printed texts, and knowing their exact whereabouts in unfamiliar areas. The app lets users dial numbers using a voice assisted touchscreen. Users can also utilize the speech input to send text messages and tag previous routes or hazards through navigation apps.

Eight cars will be employed in a test at a McDonald's store in Ibaraki Prefecture on March 5-16. When vehicles enter a region covered by an ITS -- which offers real-time traffic data and other information -- a McDonald's menu will be transmitted to car navigation systems, allowing users to order items via the touch screen. Users can pay with their credit cards through ITS-compatible devices in their cars.
"Target's private marketplace operates similarly to others that retailers like Best Buy and Amazon have developed recently. For example, a user may visit Target.com and check out its high-def TVs. As that user navigates to other parts of Target's site, a brand like Sony or Samsung could run ads aimed at that user promoting their TVs-provided they are sold by Target.

Mapkin is a new platform that lets friends send each other personalized directions, with custom instructions and voice recordings.
Once users have created a route from one point to another, they can begin to add elements along the way. Choosing from a list of popular stop-off points or creating their own, they can include points of interest such as restaurants, gas stations and parking spaces. Mapkin enables users to also add their own comments along the way - directing friends to avoid a particular junction or simply making instructions clearer or more fun. To replace the limited selection available with standard GPS navigation devices, directions can be complemented with users' own voice recordings. Maps can then be saved and shared with friends over email, SMS or social networks.
The redesign will provide clearer navigation and more opportunities to discover new content.
The new home page will feature links to content verticals, such as DYI and animals, and to popular pins.
Additionally, each pinned photo will display more information about what is depicted and where it comes from.
"We've added more information related to pins, so it's easier to find things you're interested in. For example, on each pin, you'll see pins from the same board, other boards this pin was pinned to, and a whole slew of related pins," the company said in a blog post.
"The robot is built using the Pepper companion robot, IBM Watson's artificial intelligence systems for natural language, and Panasonic's in-flight data and displays, along with Here Maps indoor navigational data.
It isn't just for in-flight use. The robot can check in passengers at the gate, scan their tickets, and then circulate in a plane or wait at the end of a flight to tell passengers - in their own language - which gate they need to go to for a connecting flight."
According to Carter, food lovers just need to download the app and start exploring. By navigating the app, they can find foodie friends and post articles or videos, as on their Facebook feeds, follow the chefs they like, as they would do on Twitter and publish photos of their preferred meals, as they would do on Instagram. When users publish a pic of a meal, the system suggests a selection of wines to pair with it.
Professional chefs and restaurateurs will need to go through a few additional steps to join True Foodies. They can either be invited by a chef who is already part of the community, or by supplying validation of their professional identity and qualifications.

But here's one way Banjo could shine: It's launching a new "trending places" feature, where users can quickly navigate to any place in the world where a flurry of updates are being posted. You can imagine this being useful for planned and unplanned major events, from festivals to natural disasters.
This means that users of StumbleUpon's Android app can take advantage of Android Beam to share any content they discover on the app to other NFC-enabled devices running ICS. The app will also feature the Android Action Bar, allowing users to explore the Web via the Android navigation interface.
