This is a first announcement and invitation to participate in the International Conference on Language Policy, Planning and Support in Higher Education - Challenges of Multilingualism. As the title suggests, three main themes will be dealt with: * The development, implementation and management of language policies for a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting * Language planning (management, structures, services, etc.) needed to support language policies in a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting * The diversity of language support initiatives needed to guarantee successful language policy implementation in a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting The conference will be held at the Spier Estate outside Stellenbosch, South Africa, a magnificent rural setting that should stimulate fascinating discussion on a set of complex topics. The Modern Language Association supports a broad, intellectually driven approach to teaching language and culture in higher education. To study the best ways of implementing this approach in today's world, the MLA Executive Council established an Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages. The committee was charged with examining the current language crisis that has occurred as a result of 9/11 and with considering the effects of this crisis on the teaching of foreign languages in colleges and universities. This summary of the committee's and the Executive Council's deliberations offers background and context for the association's recommendations regarding the challenges and opportunities facing language study in higher education. While the recommendations address issues specific to the United States, they may be applicable to other contexts and countries.

This document is a code of best practices that helps educators using media literacy concepts and techniques to interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use. Fair use is the right to use copyrighted material without permission or payment under some circumstances-especially when the cultural or social benefits of the use are predominant. It is a general right that applies even in situations where the law provides no specific authorization for the use in question-as it does for certain narrowly defined classroom activities. This guide identifies five principles that represent the media literacy education community's current consensus about acceptable practices for the fair use of copyrighted materials, wherever and however it occurs: in K-12 education, in higher education, in nonprofit organizations that offer programs for children and youth, and in adult education.

The paper, entitled "The Future of Higher Education: How Technology will Shape Learning " reports the results of a study of nearly 300 CIOs and technology leaders inside and outside of education.

Simulations in Higher Education (SHE) is a focus for these initiatives at UWE. It is part of the E-learning Development Unit, which works with colleagues across the university to help with developments in curricula and delivery that use ICT. This SHE website describes the projects, technologies and underpinning pedagogies that these initiatives draw upon, and develop.

This is the first commission in history charged with examining accessible instructional materials for postsecondary students with disabilities."

This site is a search portal for materials collected/developed by 9 major educational organizations (National Council of Teachers of English, American Library Association, etc.) Although it seems primarily aimed at lower-ed educators, the search function does have a category for "higher ed" materials. There is also a parallel site in Spanish, which might be useful for beginning-level Spanish learners.

The Autonomous Language Learning (ALL) project, funded by the European Union, is building Blended Learning language courses in four European languages (Turkish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian. These courses are designed for students who have had an initial introduction in one of the languages and who wish to progress from a basic survival level to a higher competency (A2 of the Common European Framework) The project results are for Language schools and Colleges. The partners in this project are experts in language education and technology in education, from across Europe. You can get involved and contribute to this project in a number of ways.

Following a student's complaint to the university that his name was listed on the Web site of a public course, Georgia Tech officials decided on Monday to remove all Swikis other than ones from the current semester, said Mark Guzdial, a professor in the School of Interactive Computing, who is a co-creator of the Swikis."
