1962年9月出生于江苏东台,1978-1982年在南京大学天文系学习,1988年毕业于美国西北大学数学系。他26岁的博士论文解决了早在1897年提出悬而未决的Paul Painleve猜想。他是1993年美国总统奖(青年研究者奖)1993年布拉门塞尔纯数学奖1995年马里兰州大学应用数学Monroe Martin奖得主,美国西北大学终身教授研究方向:哈密尔顿动力系统,天体力学夏志宏在上大学时就对N体问题产生了深厚兴趣。大学毕业后他来到了美国西北大学跟随萨瑞从事N体问题的研究。等到1988年他获得博士学位时,在他的博士毕业论文中他宣称他已经找到了一个五体问题的解,这个解会在有限时间内产生一个非碰撞的奇点。这样一个惊人的结果被一个二十几岁的学生获得了,几乎所有人的第一个反应都不是惊喜而是怀疑。事实上夏志宏证明的初稿中确实存在表述上的缺陷,某些关键的证明也有值得推敲之处。在这篇几乎长达百页的文章被投稿到最著名的数学杂志“数学年刊”(Annals of Mathematics)两年后,夏志宏得到了一个模棱两可的答复,审稿的人无法判断他的证明是否正确,但确实指出了其中的一些问题。夏志宏并不气馁,他继续改进补充他的证明,又把修改稿投了上去。这时的数学年刊这篇稿件的是普林斯顿大学教授马瑟尔。在1991年秋季学期,马瑟尔在普林斯顿组织了一个讨论班专门讨论夏志宏的论文。在学期结束,马瑟尔得出结论:证明是正确的。论文发表在1992年的数学年刊上。庞勒维猜想终于被彻底解决了。夏志宏在毕业后曾在哈佛大学和佐治亚理工大学先后任教,1994年起他又回到了母校西北大学任数学系的正教授,2001年起任潘克讲座教授(Arthur and Gladys Pancoe Professor of Mathematics)。在解决庞勒维猜想后,夏志宏又在动力系统领域做出了许多其他的重要贡献。
