Personalized Learning Isn't Enough. How Do We Create Learners? | Digital Promise - 0 views

The thing is, “personalized learning” isn’t our end goal. Creating learners is. Personalized learning is just the approach we use to get there – and we can personalize, personalize, personalize… but at the end of the year, if we haven’t created learners, we haven’t actually achieved our goal.

They know how to SELECT a challenge to solve. They know how to CONNECT to people and resources. They know how to REFLECT and share.

Provide the person with sample challenges to pick from and show how they fit together towards that vision. DO provide reflection tools that help her/him identify their strengths and weaknesses for themselves DON'T just assume the person knows how to write a quality goal. DO create learning networks for people who have similar goals so they can problem solve together. DO help her/him structure their thoughts; DO provide her/him with a non-threatening platform These advises are very illuminating for educators. By saying "sample challenge", teachers are encouraged to using proper scaffolding to prepare student for great challenge. Through "helping to structure their thoughts ", teacher can coach students to analyze their own thinking and prepare them to practice meaningful reflection. And the most vital skills for true learners, is their reflective skills which allow them to analyze their method of learning, knowing their own strength and weakness and make modification to perfect their skills.

PBL doesn't ask you to replace your content. It asks that you create a vehicle in which to communicate your content.
-
""PBL is the act of learning through identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Kids show what they learn as they journey through the unit, not just at the end.""

"Perhaps that skills fits within a unit based on a topic or a theme, but each lesson works independently and can function without being embraced in a unit that connects them all in a learning story. " Personally I can resonate with this comment. I agree that most of the foreign language textbook are theme based, which put vocabulary and grammar within the given theme. But between different themes lack of coherence or connection. But using PBL might be an effective way to make an connection. I would like to share a own example of using PBL.The PBL is design a Travel Itinerary. Students impersonate travel agent to design a 2 days travel itinerary which includes 3 places to visit and 4 meals, provide price, compare different travel plans and persuade buyers to purchase their own travel plan. So in the PBL they are incorporate skills from different themes "Asking direction" "Travel" "Weather" "Shopping". It is also mentioned in the article that PBL "prepare the students for predicted the future", the PBL stays as authentic as possible. Also, as an ongoing assessment, the PBL can be used independently in each assessment and then at the end combined into a big assessments.

I came across this online magazine that covers eLearning while looking for information about YouTube as a learning tool. I think it's a good general resource about eLearning and is probably geared more towards the adult/corporate training side of Learning Technologies as opposed to the K-12 education side but could be used either way. I believe it fits well under the Social Cognitive Theory but each individual article may reach into other theories.
