Short (<2 minutes) by John Spencer, uploaded June 27, 2010 to YouTube on Starting a PLN. Although oriented somewhat toward teachers, it is valuable for anyone to get a sense of what a PLN is and why it might be a good idea to do.

This video by Seth Dickens poses two questions 1) What do I know that could be shared? and 2) What do I want to learn? While I might disagree with the order, the rest of the video (about 4 minutes long) does a beautiful job of explaining what a learning (professional or personal) network is and what it allows one to do to connect purposeful and learn. Blog by Sui Fai John Mak, 1/23/2013 wondering about differences/similarities between Connectivism and Constructionivism. Like premise of Connectivism. Excerpt "Are PLNs founded in the theory of Connectivism? Connectivism is based on the notion that learning is the result of connections of nodes in networks - as the capacity to build, construct and navigate across networks (including social and personal learning networks, and the neuronetworks)."

An interesting eportfolio approach to a PLN/PLE by Chan Sook

YouTube video by Skip Via, prof. at University of Alaska in Fairbanks on Personal Learning Network, 2010. Has a great image of his PLN. He itemizes the tools according to the functions he needs: 1. Find answers 2. Read blogs/news 3. Publish and share 4. Communicate 5. Collaborate 6. Follow colleagues 7. Aggregate resources All based on people who have expertise or need his expertise.

"Networking is a prime form of 21st century learning.  The world is much smaller thanks to technology.  Learning is transforming into a globally collaborative enterprise.  Take for example scientists; professional networks allow the scientific community to share discoveries much faster. Just this month, a tech news article showcased how Harvard scientists are considering that "sharing discoveries is more efficient and honorable than patenting them."  This idea embodies the true spirit of a successful professional learning network: collaboration for its own sake. As educators, we aim to be connected to advance our craft.  On another level, we hope to teach students to use networks to prepare for them for a changing job market.  But what is the best way to approach PLNs?"

Wonderful blog post on social learning by Sahana Chattopadhyay, October 19, 2014. Identified by Jane Hart. Excerpt: "Then comes the dichotomy of having an enterprise collaboration platform where no one is sharing, where there are no conversations happening, no debates and questions. It's a ghost town. At the end of the day, the platform doesn't matter. The culture of the organization does. An organization with an essentially command and control approach, an overly competitive outlook, and a repressive environment is not yet ready for social learning." Does this mean the employees are not engaging in "social learning"? Not at all. Learning has been social ever since human life was born on this planet and will continue to be so, with or without technology. Individuals will get their work done by talking to peers, reaching out to their network, and bringing their #pln and #pkm to work.

Although this is geared for educators, it is a great simple explanation of PLN, why they are important, and how they work.

This is very valuable. I would like to have more information about how to create the dashboard to hold all the information he mentions.
