Design‐based research: designing a multimedia environment to support language learning - 2 views

    Adopting a design-based research methodology, this study used digital video technology to support reflective tasks for language learning in multimedia environments. The emphasis was on the improvement of oral communication skills. The reflective tasks used in this study were exposed to iterative design process and the whole research process was driven by two underlying learning theories. This iterative and theory driven design reflects the nature of DBR well.

    Hi Yasin, thanks for sharing the research study. It is a good example for DBR, like you said, as it includes a theory driven iterative process which is one of the most fundamental characteristics of DBR.

    Is there ant iteration in the design here? Or is it the implementation of three different courses?

    Hocam, students' reflective practice happened in different formats each year. To be more specific, task-completion tools and task-completion formats were exposed to an iterative design. Each year a different tool and a format were implemented and the reflection by the students progressed in an iterative way though it was conducted with different classes. For example, in 2006, students of Class 1 reviewed their presentations in a multimedia player and reflected on it via a word-processing program. In 2008, YouTube was used for their presentations and they had a collaborative reflective task after being paired with each other. So, a different design was applied for each year but in an iterative fashion.

    Doodle3D Transform is a new 3D app that you can transfom your 2D drawings easily into 3D designs. Beside drawing by hand, you can also scan your photos or upload existing ones. After completing designs, you can send to 3D printer and have it. This project attract much attention at Kickstarter and they collected enough fund. This application can not be a sort of augmented reality one, I don't know but I want to share. I think, it is very usable and helpful for especially kindergarten students. Besides, while STEM is gaining many attention at the education society; this app can also be usable at other level with developing some extensions. Creativity is very important for all students at education and it is very appropriate for that mission. Using pen at our mobile education is still can be spectacular sometimes and I cannot imagine what will possibly happen if developers of that application succeed.

    Mustafa, It was really helpful from some aspects but I remember that I was frequently complaining about the software. It gave a chance to practice a lot what I had learnt previous class. It was good to have problems in a large scale of complexity ( from easiest to hardest). And sometimes questions were picturized and there were graphs etc. Mostly, they were for real life situations. We were trying to solve problems which we come face to face everyday.However, there were also drawbacks, for example the answers arranged in a way that they do not accept any other solution computer offers.Our answers had to be exactly same from decimals to points. This could sometimes let a disoppointment and robbed my motivation down.And there were fear of getting bad marks because in the and of the homework we were graded by our performance. All in all, despite its drawbacks, 7 years ago it was nice to have this different kind of method in our classess.

    The professor made a distinction between learning and deeper learning and he says deeper learning differs as it does not suggest superficial comprehension. Actually, deeper learning is not something specific to science learning; it is learning with understanding (as far as I understood). Deeper learning is what we mean by learning, is not it?

    Deeper learning is what we are supposed to teach our students. Not superficial but deep and comprehensive knowledge. I don't think that the professor limits it to science learning since he doesn't focus on one subject area "science". What he says is that no matter what students learn, they should be guided and provided help in order to let them get comprehensive and permanent knowledge. Superficial knowledge which is gathered through memorization is more likely to be forgotton soon.

    I certainly do not believe that the current system 4+4+4 meets the requirements of the 21st century. In Turkey, something is changed every year about the examination, curriculum, grading and so on. We do not have the opportunity to see the effects of the new system. Moreover, I agree with your ideas that before conducting a reform, the mentality should be changed first whether it is about the educational management, curriculum or other components. If this does not occur, the results will just be superficial and temporary.

    It is like imitating other countries and take their education systems for granted rathr than reforming. Whatever it is, the education systems not only in East but also in some parts of west are based on social efficiency theory and students are conceived as to-be-workers. Self-actualization and intellectual development are not even in the secondary place.

    as it is mentioned in the video, our educattion system also kill the creativity of the students and cause them to behave like robots.I think we loose huge amont of potential to produce artistic, scientific and tecnological productions.

    Thank you Defne :-) I don't know why but I always like reading the issues we discuss in well-known magazines and this is one of them :-)) Up to know, we've mostly tended to make a link between feelings and psychology, but now we see that our feelings and actions are closely connected with neurons, smtg physical. I wish we could understand all its implications on education. Perhaps in the future...

    The first robot teacher was tested in Tokyo in 2009 to sixth and seventh graders. The robot teacher can express six basic emotions - happiness, surprise, fear, disgust, sadness and anger. As I know a French company has developed a robot teacher, too.

    I did not like the idea of having a robot teacher. What about interaction between students and teachers? Why would I need to have a robot teacher rather than a human one? It is like being in front of a computer telling you the knowledge and inform you of your mistakes.

    For sure, robot 'teacher' would not teach effectively and in a favourable way. However, as it is mentioned, it can show how impressive and creative technology would integrate to the classes and learning environments. This is the way students may 'touch' the technology.

    To admit, yes it is an impressive way. However, I got stuck when it was said that robots could replace teachers in case of teacher shortage. It can be used as a tool for teaching-learning but it can not be treated as a teacher in real terms.

    I think this is too much technological, where is the interaction? I totally agree with Yelda and Sinem in that a robot teacher cannot provide the effective class environment and fulfill teaching. The communication is really important in learning process, with a robot teacher this is impossible.
