    I cjecked the socie-economic status of the families. Families seem to be high in terms of socie-economic status. This made me think that the students will not worry about university enterance exams, since they will have some opportunity to enter some private ones.

    I think this is certainly a more situated-learning based school as there is no exam threat :) However, we should completely change the system, if we want to apply this schooling all over Turkey. With our system, we can't even fulfill "learning" because of the hundreds of exams. We just try to pass the exams with grade anxiety. Also, what about the socio-economically disadvantaged schools? They don't have such a luxury, I think.

    most probably you have heard that Summerhill School in England. It is a boarding school founded by A.S. Neill in 1921 and its basic principle is the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the child should be made to fit the school.     There is this point that I totally agree with Burcu about disadvantaged groups. Also whenever I think about examples like Sudbury Valley, I get impressed by the idea of getting rid of exam threat. But for our country, we have to change like everything, the belief systems, the culture, the attitudes. We have a lot do to in that respect, even if our main intention to make just a small change.

    The goal is to improve learning by motivating students and by providing a rich context for learning. It emphasizes the context and application of knowledge rather than memorizing facts (Heeter, 2005). This quotation is crucial for me because in Turkey, the education is based on memorization simply. The knowledge is "high on the clouds". We need to make it more usable and applicable.

    Thank you for the source; as also Burcu provided an example of his work, he is important for this topic. He is mainly concerned with linguistics and has many studies of discourse analysis. The effect of video games on learning is one of his main concerns.

    I remember many years ago I read a science fiction book about a game which was created to select the President. (Spoiler - The winner of the game was a 13 old year boy:)) Actually games are very interesting and will be very useful for education but the main problem here is the nature of market and the cost. Last week I was reading an article about mobile learning, I think this quote is meaningful for games too "In any case, hardware devices and technical systems are all without exception designed, manufactured, and marketed for corporate, retail, or recreational users. Any educational uses of the devices and the systems are necessarily parasitic and secondary." We have to consider education as "building the nation, building our future" then we can afford the cost and then educational games, devices will not be secondary...

    Yelda, honestly, I also used to question the contribution of video games to learning and nowadays, as seeing more examples like the one you shared, I guess yes perspective are changing:) I believe as we also discussed in the forum, the most critical thing is how the material, video or something else is presented to the learners and used, not the material itself.

    The same material in two differnt hands may serve to two differnt ideologies , beliefs, subject areas hence I do definitely agree with Canan the mentality of the minds who are using those plays the important role.

    This is a very nice video about situated learning in mathematics. as i understood, the professor advocates that the more important thing is how you give a context rather than just saying what it is. Moreover, using of context of land, areas, puzzles or folk stories make students learn better. Thus, she mentioned that they prepare the books used in primary or elementary classes in terms of these characteristics, and since they do not have a national curriculum, every state makes its own national curriculum. SOme of the schools adapt to some extent and translate them. What about our country? Is it possible to redevelop the curricula in terms of different regions of our country? How should we make it?

Why Social Interaction Is Essential To Learning Math - 3 views

    I have seen this post when I was searching for how can interaction with peers contribute to learning maths. It is written by ROBERT SUN who is the CEO of Suntex International and inventor of First In Math, an online program designed for deep practice in mathematics. The things that are mentioned felt very similar with our country's situation actually, as learners how do we use concepts of maths (or any other courses) except from school? May be the first reason for our students cannot learn and hate maths is behind this question.

Anything that encourages them to talk about math and mathematical concepts is beneficial." Social math!. It looks like article emphasizes the importance of language in information exchange. It reminds me Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory in which he also believed that language is important for learning. He also purported that language is culture-dependent so each cultures' learning may be different from each other. In addition, providing opportunity to students to express themselves verbally can give us clues about current mental maps of students as to a specific topic (what is correct, what needs improvement, etc.). In addition, students can transfer their transformed ideas (ideas transformed from scholarly language to level-appropriate language) to their friends which can facilitate their learning.

    Yasin, I am curious to hear about some of the contemporary approaches towards teaching Math, a subject generally taught with more traditional methods. Regarding mathphobia, we also need to think about the culture that stimulates that.

    I also believe that the power of emotions in the learning. I think that if we can situmulate the emotions in lesson, we can make lessons more intesting, enjoable and the knowledge gathered through this lesson will be long lasting. Threfore, as it is stated in the article, teachers should create situations that situmalte students' emotions.

    That's true. Education is a social-emotional act. As I said in my personal learning theory, teaching humans is not like inserting lines of codes to series of robots to make them behave in a specific way. We all have emotions and our emotions to a specific event may not be same all the time as our point of views to an event are affected by our personal experiences, culture, philosophy, etc. In that sense, for a teacher, it is important to monitor students' feelings to a specific topic and to arrange learning environments in which students have positive feelings about a topic.
