On Not Banning Laptops in the Classroom - Techist: Teaching, Technology, History, & Innovation - 0 views

  • Those studies about the wonders of handwriting all suffer from the same set of flaws, namely, a) that they don’t actually work with students who have been taught to use their laptops or devices for taking notes. That is, they all hand students devices and tell them to take notes in the same way they would in written form. In some cases those devices don’t have keyboards; in some cases they don’t provide software tools to use (there are some great ones, but doing it in say, Word, isn’t going to maximize the options digital spaces allow), in some cases the devices are not ones the students use themselves and with which they are comfortable. And b) the studies are almost always focused on learning in large lecture classes or classes in which the assessment of success is performance on a standardized (typically multiple-choice) test, not in the ways that many, many classes operate, and not a measure that many of us use in our own classes. And c) they don’t actually attempt to integrate the devices into the classes in question,
  • I have plenty of conversations with students about how to take notes already. Most of the time their problem isn’t which device (pencil, laptop, phone, quill) they use to take those notes, but how to take them and how to use them to learn based on their own experiences, learning styles, and discipline

    While the post is focused on Universities, there are a number of interesting points. Perhaps of most interest is the explanation why much of the research claiming that taking notes by hand writing is better than using a laptop/table.

This is a good point but I still feel it integrates across all learning areas and needs to be up to the teacher how they use ICT. I agree though that a subject teaching the skills and workings of ICT is a good idea and there does seem a huge variation as to how much ICT is used in the classroom.     I read a very interesting article written by Joke Voogt (the Netherlands), Chris Dede (USA).Ola Erstad (Norway), which discusses the importance of ICTs in 21t century learning. They reiterated on the topic that "rapid development of information and communication technologies (ICT) are continuously transforming the way in which we live, work and learn." They explored they skills that are required for living and working in the 21st century: collaboration, communication, digital literacy, citizenship, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, productivity. I agree with Voogt and Dede when they say that "an important change has taken place in the way new digital tools and collaborative environments have enhanced learning, from an emphasis on reproducing information and content to content creation and sharing in virtual environments, which some describe as a remixing culture. There are 3 main literacies that we need to develop: Technological literacy (to be aware of the interplay between technology and society), ICT literacy (the skills needed to make effective and efficient use of ICT) and Information literacy (the capacity to access information efficiently and effectively) (Voogt and Dede, 2011). I think the biggest statement that they make is "using ICT to shift our educational structures from industrial era schools to new types of 21st century formal educational models is important" (Voogt & Dede, 2011). I believe schools are now on the edge of this shift, but some educators are reluctant. I mean to make that shift, to evaluate how I use ICTs in the classroom and how I use them to transform learning, not just to use them as 'add-ons'.

      The point I take from this is that not "everything" is about how hard you work. There are other more important factors to be considered. And these factors mean that not everyone will be a genius in everything. But if you have to learn something (e.g. using ICTs to enhance/transform student learning) then spending the necessary time in an effective way to learn that skill is more likely to help you learn, than simply saying "I can't do it".

    For me - as I think you can probably guess from how I used it - this talks to me about how technology becomes mythic. This child's schemas are such that she assumes everything has a touch interface. While she's currently wrong, it may not be that long before that is the case. From there lots of implications and questions flow.
