    This is a blog that I have recently found while completing the Week 2 Learning Path for EDC3100. It caught my attention because the blog is written by a qualified primary school teacher in Sydney. It is a blog where thoughts and reflections are shared as well as helpful advice and other resources for educators in training.

    I love the second quote! I find my head hurts if I try too hard to imagine not knowing something. I find as a teacher it really interesting seeing students going from 'I don't understand this' to 'How did I not see this before?'. I love seeing the flash of understanding so I really love that quote!

There is some value in doing this type of stuff as long as there is amplification going on AND it's part of a broader move from traditional forms of learning to different types of learning. I'm also troubled by the "one size fits all" approach to this. "Nothing works everywhere".

This can also be a way of distracting students from learning, taking students away from composing written pieces and being distracted by the aesthetics of presentation mode.

  • What the research tells usResearch indicates that to implement ICT successfully in their classrooms teachers must ...understand what visual literacy is and rethink what learning to read and write means in the 21st century. (Goodwyn et al 1997; Reid et al, 2002) The research also indicates that ICT is most effective when embedded in the curriculum, and integrated into units of work (Dickinson, 1998). English teachers can maximize the impact of ICT in their classrooms by ensuring that they and their students use ICT as an integral part of lessons, present ideas dynamically, and use a range of media. (Becta, 2006). ICT should be integrated in such a way as to require purposeful application and meaningful engagement with the technology. For example:while pupils are using a desk top publishing package to create a school newspaper they are also developing their ability to communicate more effectively. This provides both a context and a meaning for the ICT activity. Taking the IT out of context and teaching IT skills separately, not only decontextualises ICT but also places additional burdens on curriculum time. The use of ICT therefore should be a meaningful part of an activity where it is used to consolidate or extend pupils' learning.     I am starting to understand how ICTs can be and powerful tool in the classroom after having a mostly negative perception of ICTs in classrooms. It's important for educators to demonstrate and model to students how ICTs can be used to build/ share knowledge and understanding - being used in smart ways.

    Here is a link that is used extensively at my daughter's school with great success. You can set up a personalised learning journey in many different curriculum strands that the student can follow both in class and at home. It can be enough to last the week for homework, the term or even the whole year. There is a built in reward system too.

Creativity in my drama class is something that ICTs will definitely help with I think. This link shows the relationship between ICT and inspiring creative thinking.       Here, here, I so agree with you Jackie so often parents only find themselves in school to make a complaint or the like never have I seen a parent just wanting to spend time in their childs classroom just to see. It would be beneficial for all if there were time when this could happen.

      Connections with parents is important. In fact, it's one of the AITSL professional standards. But I wonder why parents don't spend more time in their child's classroom? I'm sure there would be many parents (but perhaps not all) who want to be more involved with their child's education, but who can't for various reasons.  I wonder if we can make it easier for them to be involved?

      Equality is something that would be missed in a flipped classroom. With the cost of living increasing not all families are going to afford the technology that a flipped classroom requires students to have access to at home.

      Wouldn't lack of equality be bridged if the students who didn't have access to the internet went to school early or stayed back a bit later to listen to the videos. If there was supervision, what difference would it make being at school or at home for the video presentation?

      I agree with a comment made above too, that maybe the school day needs to be re-arranged if a flipped classroom pedagogy is going to be introduced - give students time during normal school hours to watch the videos then have the classroom discussion

    I just watched a TED talk in the last week about slowing down and taking the time - it was really very true but as I watched it I did keep checking the time bar at the bottom of the page..........thinking about all the other things I should be doing! I do though find watching TED talks, reminds me often of what I already knew but they are usually great reinforcements that remind me of my goals, work / life balance or bits of inspiration that provide a little "pick me up".

This task was also inclusive in regards to students who might have had learning difficulties. It provided a platform for these students to express themselves creatively through the use of colours, images, written text or a variety of materials such as button, beads, different fabrics that they could cut out and paste, etc.

      This reminds me of a student with ASD at a school I am aware of that wrote his own book about the struggles of making friends. It was an amazing experience for this boy, his twin sister illustrated it for him and his best friend assisted. He performed readings of the book for all the classrooms. Such an amazing experience for the child and the school.

      Another awesome result of this activity is that it makes literacy possible and enjoyable for all  students. Not all students enjoy or succeed in reading, but show far more engagement with writing, especially when given freedom of expression, and encouraged to write about something relevant and enjoyable to them.

    Reasons as to why I thought this was a good idea: - students and parents are involved - everyone in the class, all learning abilities, got involved - it gave writing a sense of purpose for the class - students could relate it to interests and real life concepts. - students took charge of what they are going to write

    This software is currently being used at my children's school. It is like an electronic version of giving out 'stickers', etc for good behaviour. Each day I can see how well my children performed in the classroom and each week a report is generated and emailed to me. This is used in conjunction with an interactive whiteboard, where the children can touch their name/dojo character and give themselves a point for hard work, etc.

    Magical idea, Luv it. Will save a small fortune for teachers worldwide, as we tend to buy these incentives from our own back pockets in an attempt to engage kids in our classes. Even as a pre-service teacher the little buggers have already cost me......
