I like the idea for the math concepts. This would also make a good homework activity - ask students to photograph 3D shapes or angles etc.

I love this website. Great ideas and very useful also. I hope you dont mind if I share this. Thanks. Great idea for young children to get introduced to ways you can use a digital camera. Simple things like croping, editing etc.

I got this from a website I am subscribed to - Gizmo freeware. We think that Google is the way to always find stuff, but try this and see what you get. You type in what you want to know, and a mind map opens up on the topic. You can then click on each bubble and it extends! Fantastic.

Similar to a webquest-\In the school setting, an integrated teacher dashboard allows teachers to monitor the progess of each student, view their research activity, and view/comment on students' journals.

The Australian Curriculum - 1 views

  •
ACARA's implementation of the Australian Curriculum will enable students an equal and enriching education throughout the nation. As a future educator and studying for the past 4 years education, it is enlightening to know that in the near future, Australia as a nation will have one type of education for all states. The Australian Curriculum will enable teachers to travel throughout Australia, be able to provide students with a consistent learning experience, and will endeavor to advance and push students in a positive direction. I am all for the Australian Curriculum and am excited to know that this is the way that education is heading. The equality of the Australian Curriculum not only for educators as well as students, but for parents, knowing that their children will benefit from equal learning opportunities. The Learning Areas for the Australian Curriculum currently include: English, Mathematics, Science and History. General capabilities, a key dimension of the Australian Curriculum, are addressed explicitly in the content of the learning areas. They play a significant role in realising the goals set out in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) - that all young people in Australia should be supported to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. The Australian Curriculum includes seven general capabilities: Literacy Numeracy Information and communication technology (ICT) capability Critical and creative thinking Personal and social capability Ethical understanding Intercultural understanding. http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/File/C26D8605-FAA2-4B40-BE10-A15500EE1EB6. Accordingly, the Australian Curriculum must be both relevant to the lives of students and address the contempor

What are ICTs?: How you use ICTs is important - 3 views

  • “while new digital technologies make a learning revolution possible, they certainly do not guarantee it” (Resnick, 2002 , p. 32).
  • in fact, is critical is “how” the technologies are used (Reimann & Goodyear, 2004)
    • Fran Gemmell

This relates back to the toolbelt theory -  we need to be mindful of the purpose for which we are using ICTs and be open to new ways of doing things and new possibilities that ICTs might offer.
    • Kate Kermode

Yes Fran I agree.. ICT's are fantastic tools within the classroom and can help with student engagement... but we must not forget the importance of tacticle objects and relating back to student context...
  • technologies by themselves have little scaleable or sustained impact on learning in schools” (Honey, McMillan & Carrig, 1999 in Hayes, 2003, p. 3)

  • valency as a conduit for communication, collaboration and knowledge building has the potential to transform learning.

This is a bit of a perpetual cycle. Technology itself doesn't guarantee an education revolution but it certainly is the driving force for needing one.

The Effects of Whiteboard Animations on Retention and Subjective Experiences when Learn... - 1 views

  • we found that whiteboard animations have a positive effect on retention, engagement and enjoyment, although we do not rule out the possibility that some of this result is due to novelty
  • While animations have a long history in the realm of education, and there is a plethora of research on instructional animations, attempts to measure their impact on educational outcomes have been inconclusive and often contradictory (Betrancourt, 2005)
  • For practical applications, however, the relevant question is not whether animations affect learning, but rather when and how animation affects learning ( Höffler & Leutner, 2007; Mayer & Moreno, 2002)
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Thus, the goal of this study is to investigate the relative effectiveness of whiteboard animations on retention and subjective experiences of enjoyment, engagement, attention and challenge compared to more common and less costly instructional materials
  • Overall, we found significant positive effects of the use of whiteboard animation in conveying physics lessons
  • While encouraging, these findings suffer from some shortcomings: the lessons are all in one topic area, and the narration is, from the outset, conceived with animation accompaniment in mind, which may unfairly represent the other formats. This is a general enigma of media comparison studies; if you use the same material in all contexts, it may skew in favor of the context for which it was originally designed. If you don’t use the same material you cannot guarantee uniformity of experience.
  •
Empirical research into the effectiveness of "whiteboard animation" (Google that term to find out what it is). An example of empirical resarch.

leading and learning: Guy Claxton's Magnificent Eight - 0 views

  • Guy Claxton believes that teachers need to focus on how they relate to students in their classrooms. What is important , he writes, are the values embodied in how they talk, what they notice, the activities they design, the environments they create, and the examples they set day after day. These represent the culture of the class.

How data analysis boosted the performance of Queensland school students - CIO - 0 views

  • “I don’t buy into the fact that we can get a system – and this is not a popular belief – that can do the full analysis of what students need,” he said
  • “I value the teaching profession and I think they need to look at the data that’s put out in front of them, the information that’s cut in different ways and use their ‘neck top computer’ [brain] to make some sort of valued judgement as to what the data is saying.
  • “Information can give black or white positives or negatives, but without the analytical mind of the teacher over the top understanding the student, what’s happening at home and in the classroom, they [IT] actually miss some of that analysis.”
  •
Magazine report of a presentation by the CIO (Chief Information Officer) of the Department of Education and Training in Queensland. The presentation talks about how using ICT to gather and enable analysis of student data is helping schools and teachers better support students.
