Parent Benefits Positive parent-school communications benefit parents. The manner in which schools communicate and interact with parents affects the extent and quality of parents' home involvement with their children's learning. For example, schools that communicate bad news about student performance more often than recognizing students' excellence will discourage parent involvement by making parents feel they cannot effectively help their children.

Reading Rockets is a great resource, I remember using this for an assignment quite some time ago. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

A good idea to follow other teachers. The best way you can improve your own practice is to learn from others.

This is a primary school teacher whom i know personally. She began her career as a teacher soon after graduating high school - a dream job for her. Years later in her life she took a break from the classroom to run a family business. She has now done a complete 360 and has put her teaching hat back on once again. She quotes: "Well after having my first day back in the classroom I am SO HAPPY because I know I am doing the right thing for me. I had a wonderful day and I now know how much I actually missed being a teacher. Today was a big step in a new chapter that involves lots of learning for me but I am doing that through fresh and keen eyes and I am very excited!!" This woman is very inspiring and easily someone you can lean on for support. An asset to any classroom or workplace!

Its great to hear people say that we need to work together. I remember years ago a friend of mine (who was a Grade 6 teacher) told me of her frustration when she would encourage her students and they were alive with excitement to learn and explore and the work they handed in was exceptional from her point of view. However, six months into the next year she would be so disappointed because the grades of the Year 7 students would be declining and their attitude was one of apathy. What she wanted to do was to work with the Year 7 teacher so with a combined effort they could assist the students to continue their positive attitude throughout their time at upper primary school. The Year 7 teacher felt threatened and the sad cycle continued. I got this from a website I am subscribed to - Gizmo freeware. We think that Google is the way to always find stuff, but try this and see what you get. You type in what you want to know, and a mind map opens up on the topic. You can then click on each bubble and it extends! Fantastic.

Miss Jacobs' Little Learners is a great blogspot! It is aimed at Early Years education and the post contain great ideas for the classroom.

Given students' preconceptions of history as fixed information, cultivating students' interpretive and evidence-based thinking is foundational to advancing their disciplinary understanding. This study examines the ways in which preservice history teachers construct tasks that demand students' interpretive and evidence-based thinking and attend to such thinking in their field placements while being taught to do so in their methods courses. Analysis of methods course assignments, student teaching observations, and assessments of candidates' disciplinary knowledge led to the construction of three cases of novice teachers' efforts to teach these ways of thinking to their students. The one novice who attended to her students' interpretive and evidentiary thinking translated her disciplinary knowledge into lessons that involved analysis of text in developing interpretations and gave general prompts to provide evidence in support of students' conclusions. This study highlights the role of preservice teachers' disciplinary understanding and pedagogical content knowledge in developing students' interpretive and evidentiary thinking in history classrooms.
