  • "The partnership between O3b Networks and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. continues to expand, and the real winners are the guests and crew aboard the most innovative ships at sea. The alliance is based on a shared mission built on the belief that the Internet should always be within reach - on land and at sea."
  •
Royal Caribbean and O3b Networks have again signed a multi-year contract. O3b will once again be providing "high-speed satellite-delivered broadband service" to the Allure of the Seas. The system used is O3bMaritime and Royal Caribbean was one of the first cruise lines to use this system. This system will be on their two largest ships the Oasis and the Allure based in the Caribbean. It is also the only system that is on par with telecommunication standards on land. Soon O3b will deliver more bandwidth on these two ships than on all other cruise ships in the Caribbean. I personally feel internet access really lacks on many of the cruise lines right now and feel Royal Caribbean is taking a step in the right direction with O3b. My family and I like to cruise a lot and have received very spotty internet access around the globe. In today's world many people still have to check up on work while on vacation or keep in contact with family, it only makes sense for cruise lines to start working on faster internet comparable to on land. I read various cruise line message boards and this is a common complaint about slow internet access or virtually none. In the current economy where all the various lines are in competition against one another, this gives Royal Caribbean a leg up in the competition. Additionally, my understanding the only region where satellite internet is unavailable is off the coast of Japan due to government regulations. This system makes sense to have available one day in more regions.
  •
I for one am very happy to hear this news. I too have experienced the snail-paced internet "access" on cruise ships. With the high cost per minute and slow speeds, cruisers can't help but feel that they wasted their money. This definitely gives Royal Caribbean an advantage over Carnival, NCL and other large cruise lines. By implementing O3b networks on their two largest and most popular ships, they will reach their target consumer and help spread the word.

BENEFIT - 0 views

  • Technology has been a key driver of growth for the hospitality sector over the last decade. New technologies for jobs like real-time inventory access, seamless exchange of operational information and collation of key performance data, have transformed the hotel and restaurant business. And the biggest positive from this process has been the enhanced customer experience, leading to higher loyalty. Thus, technology has increased profits for restaurants and hotels, and also helped in reining in costs on a long-term basis by reducing manpower and improving the quality of service.
  • Key technologies used Currently the most popular technologies being used are accounting systems for back office needs and the Internet, along with POS solutions for front office solutions. These systems are found in over 90 per cent of the establishments in the industry.   K Ramakrishnan, president, Marketing, Café Coffee Day, says “The two key technologies we use are POS for our café operations and ‘SAP IS Retail’ for the back-end warehouse supply chain requirements. Besides, our Cafés are Wi-Fi enabled. We also use Facebook and Twitter to understand and listen to what our consumers have to  say. It serves as an excellent tool to receive reviews on what we do and how we can make the café space more fun and exciting. We use these inputs to refresh our menu, look and overall feel,” he adds.
  • Touch screen POS: Point of sale systems now have a touch screen  display to allow cashiers and servers to input orders. It automatically sends the order to the kitchen without the need for a call or a manual dining ticket. The latest POSs can even send separate dining tickets for different food preparations, for an order. Stock and time clock management: These two components can be directly integrated in the latest POS terminals, allowing employees to clock in and out of any POS. The central computer keeps tab of the hours worked. It also allows computers to keep track of food and dry stock, based on the orders that are coming back through the POS system. It alerts the server, if a particular ingredient is out of stock. Technology also helps accurately measure the exact amount that goes into a fryer basket or in portions/ servings. This helps in maintaining the same standards each time an order is placed. Modern financial control tools allow managers to make balance sheets, statements of cash flow and income. There are advanced softwares available, which help the management get a clear view of the finances involved in the day-to-day running of the restaurant. Future technologies Many new technologies are also knocking at the door of the Indian hospitality industry. Internationally, these tools are already in use to improve efficiency. For instance, client server technologies (CST) offer great advantages to mid and large sized multi-property hospitality chains. They allow owners to effectively integrate disparate systems like multiple computer platforms or software, accumulated over the years. They simplify report generation and MIS (management information system) support, making these functions more efficient. Players that are in expansion mode and are trying to overhaul their IT infrastructure can use these solutions to reduce their IT costs and improve staff productivity. Software as a service (SaaS) or pay as-you-go services (where software such as ERP solutions are made available on demand over the Internet and users are required to pay a monthly rental based on the time and nature of use) have also emerged as another cost effective way of handling data and processes over the Internet. Here, companies can reap big dividends by effectively cutting down on their system maintenance costs. Green technology is another option, players can look at. It helps improve sustainability in areas like energy efficiency through the use of solar power for cooking or water heating. Solid waste management, plastic and paper recycling machines, rain water harvesting, and water efficient technologies, are other green technologies. If deployed in earnest, restaurants and hotels can reap long term benefits, besides scoring high on environment friendliness and brand image improvement, among customers.

TripAdvisor launches eco-friendly hotel program - 0 views

  •
TripAdvisor just launched the new TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program, which ranks hotels across the U.S. according to their engagement in environmentally-friendly practices like linen and towel re-use, recycling and composting, solar panel and electric car charging station implementation, and green roofing.
  •
With TripAdvisor's launch of the new GreenLeaders program, it will help hoteliers as well as restaurants and other businesses increase their Green initiative commitment. I know for the Florida Green Lodging Certification, it is a simple, yet tedious, form to complete, covering many aspects that can help reduce waste of products, energy, and gasses. Thanks to a bill that was passed in the not-so-distant past, certain aspects of the government travel requires their selection of lodging and/or meeting facilities to be green. This is in an effort to encourage those changes in order to secure government business, as well as to encourage personal & leisure travel, government or not, to choose green facilities. The more we increase the demand for green properties, the more properties will seek to make the necessary changes and commitment. In addition, the application process changes periodically, increasing the information and steps necessary to become green. Through all of that, we will begin to notice bigger steps to be made to save our resources and our environment. TripAdvisor launching this program will only help in these efforts. Along with increasing efforts, the feedback will be a great tool for use when selecting how to make those changes. Sure, nothing is perfect and you will still have those that prefer the convenience instead of the overall "Save the Earth" way of life, but we will be able to see what is working and what may need to be adjusted a bit.

The Virtues of Daydreaming : The New Yorker - 0 views

  • In a culture obsessed with efficiency, mind-wandering is often derided as useless—the kind of thinking we rely on when we don’t really want to think. Freud, for instance, described daydreams as “infantile” and a means of escaping from the necessary chores of the world into fantasies of “wish-fulfillment.”
  • A daydream is that fountain spurting, spilling strange new thoughts into the stream of consciousness. And these spurts turn out to be surprisingly useful.
  • Schooler argues that it’s clear evidence that those twelve minutes of daydreaming allowed the subjects to invent additional possibilities, as their unconscious minds pondered new ways to make use of toothpicks.

Effects of Layoffs on Hospitality Employee Communication Networks. - Thursday, 24th Jan... - 0 views

  •
In the hospitality industry, communication technology provides many benefits in helping workers in the hotel environment. This is an interesting article because it talks about how Informal networks are restored after downsizing…especially when there is a layoff. Everything that happens in a business's network is important because worker's store all updates and information in the system. Now when a layoff happens, it is harder for the remaining employees to take over the task of those who left. Sometimes it happens that the network/employee connections after a downsizing can interrupt the business itself. It is also important for the remaining workers to restore communication and access all other information. In every workplace, computer networks and communications are crucial for the businesses workflow. The author also mentioned that "Corporate downsizing is extremely disruptive to the surviving employees, even if the company does not formally reorganize," said Susskind. When the hotel industry, or any business, experience downsizing, it is highly difficult to gather all the workers and have them focus on getting the problem fixed. This study wanted to analyze how only few of the workers, only 97 individuals, respond to the implications in the workforce…How they correspond to the downsizing flow and turnovers. Employees might feel like all their work was a waste of time, especially if they cannot retrieve the industries information. It is the manager's task to help the workers figure out a solution and other ways to restore the communication pathways after the downsizing. In that study, they were able to evaluate how the communication pathways of the workers continued, and some who felt that it was not possible to regain the network's data had left, but many of the corporation workers decided to help with the recovery, and helped in reestablishing their tasks in organizing the system.

  • Business plans in hospitality succeeds with expertise, experience and cost effective plans.
  •
Long term financing in hospitality is often done for a period of more than one year. Such financing will have good impacts on hospitality industry like renewing its equipments and meeting operating costs with smooth cash flow. Therefore it is a cost-effective way to help hotels during their tough times in accounting and cash problems. Like we learned in accounting and financing classes, ratio analysis is the best  method to analyze finance in a hotel, which compares the current ratio with the past in order to make feasible investments in the future. What's more, long term financing in hotel industry gives lots of investment potentials. For example, by investing new sectors in F&B as well as accommodation, the job opportunity has also been increased. Besides the investments in hotels, hospitality investment also includes in airlines, cruise lines and tourism bureaus which can also bring profits. So long term financing help hospitality industry make a successful goal with experience and cost effective strategic plan in order to attract more and more tourists as well as guests.
  •
I didn't agree with the pricing method of examining the past and the prices. What for? Prices, consumers wants and needs along with products constantly change. It's an unpredictable market at times. So examining the history would be a waste of time, the only thing you could possibly get from this would be to see how much your costs have gone up in recent years and plain your profit margins accordingly. But you can do this with out having to manage your previous records and histroy. You could just look at any expense report and go from there

Reforming hospitals with IT investment - McKinsey Quarterly - Health Care - Strategy & ... - 1 views

  • New regulations that require US health care providers to use electronic health records (EHR) and adhere to strict data-coding standards will force hospitals to spend billions of dollars over the next decade to upgrade their IT systems.
  • We estimate that total savings across the US provider landscape could be on the order of $40 billion annually.
  •
IT Investments are on the rise in this world. The thought of savings money and appearing to be environmentally conciscious catches the eye of many big companies and industries. In the case of this article, United States health care providers are now demanding that hospitals make the switch from traditional paper systems to an all electronic system. This investment will cost health providers billions of dollars for the time being, however the return on investment could be a $40 billion savings for the industry in savings alone. The return on investment regarding this switch from paper to computer will require proper training and management skills in order to be successful.

VingCard Elsafe, the global leader in hospitality security and part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, announces that it has phased out the use of brass metal plating and painting in the manufacture of its locking systems, opting instead to use a more eco-friendly process to color stainless steel. VingCard Elsafe has adopted a new method of metal coloration called physical vapor deposition, or PVD, an environmentally friendly process that involves vaporizing an alloy onto stainless steel within a heated vacuum. PVD requires no chemicals and produces no waste or hazardous materials of any kind, resulting in no environmental impact whatsoever. The PVD process has other added benefits, as well. PVD-treated surfaces have high wear resistance for discoloration, and the stainless steel adds enhanced anti-corrosion properties. Besides eliminating the negative environmental effects of the brass plating process, the move by VingCard Elsafe to simplify its lock manufacturing process has had other related green benefits. By doing away with the need for secondary surface treatments of the locks, new product components are now supplied directly from metal stamping to the point of use in the assembly line. This means less shipping and transportation is required for product manufacture, resulting in a diminished carbon footprint.
  •
VingCard Elsafe is a new kind of lock system, which contains RFID technology and is compatible with the Near Field Communications. It has several advantages compared to traditional magstripe locks. First of all, it can add security to the RFID card and prevent cloning, which is much safer than the traditional key card. Another is that it can detect tampering and know when and where staffs use the lock. It can send alert to the front desk. Moreover, the front desk can know when the door is forced open. However, before using the lock system, training program should be provided. So this new kind of lock system brings safety to the guests and to the hotels.

Too many companies do not realize how important it is for them to have a representable website. A company that has a webiste shows people it is more likely a legitimate company. A company with a nice website tells people its employees take whatever they do seriously, in which make it easier for potential customers to consider using its service. How many times have people nevigate away from a website only because how pathetic it looks not even caring how good the company is? All the money a company spends on advertisement and marketing can go to waste after just one click.

LEED is developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Its responsibility is to promote sustainable building and development practices through a suite of rating systems for buildings that implement better environmental and health performance. There are two new LEED certified hotels opened in Los Angeles. One is the Shore Hotel. This hotel a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered property that offers eco-friendly accommodations with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Shore Hotel owns some sustainable features such as 50% of construction waste was recycled or salvaged, wood used in the project is from sustainable forests, 10% of all building materials are from within a 500 mile radius of the project, 'Low flow' water fixtures, significantly reducing water consumption and native landscaping, reducing the extent of required irrigation. The hotel took significant measures to ensure that the design, construction and operation of the facility will reduce the impact on the environment. Another is Hotel Wilshire. It has the sustainable features such as use of building materials with high recycled content. Smart Mobile Payment Processing - 1 views

  •
In this article by Hospitality Business News, the author emphasizes the benefits of the new Mobile Payment Processing and the basic knowledge of the Smart Phone payment. This payment way attracts a lot restaurants owners' eyes, especially in large cities and big restaurants. This Mobile payment revolutionizes the traditional payment method in hotels and restaurants, and it brings much convenience to both merchants and customers. First, it can definitely increase speed of the table turn and save time for consumers and servers. Time is money, especially in the business, customers don't need to give the card to server, and then the server brings the card to the front desk, later bring it back to the customers and customers get that. that's a waste of time compared to this smart phone payment. Second, it is also a fully integrated extension of the current POS system, it makes the POS better and resolve some patches of the current POS. it is a win-win for everyone involved. This Mobile Payment Processing is now being applied in 13 states in 49 cities. In the future, I believe that it will be applied wider than that and it will be more and more popular all over the world, especially for those busy businesses.

  • ad impressions are sent to 83% of GDS terminals worldwide
  • An advertiser only pays for ads delivered to these terminals.  Situations where an advertiser does not pay for ads would include the following: Terminals at selected agencies that have been turned off to GDS messages by agreement with the GDS to support the agency’s preferential booking programs. A travel agency group has created their own user interface that does not utilize the screen interfaces (with advertising) provided by the GDS. Terminals that are not viewed by a travel agent, but instead are being utilized by a robotic program.  This determination is based on an assessment of the transaction speed that would indicate a programmatic application.  In order to make sure that ad impressions are not wasted, advertising is turned off to these terminals.
  • In 2003, estimates are that travel agents will book $11.5 billion in room revenues compared to total online consumer bookings via the Internet of $7.5 billion.
  • Hotels are seeing a large return on their advertising investment through the GDS.  For a typical reservation worth $200 in rooms revenue (two night stay and $100 ADR), only a 0.5% response from travel agents would create a 10 times return from a GDS advertising campaign.
