The power of partnerships | Green Hotelier - 0 views

  • Taking a partnership approach is often the most effective way to find a successful lasting solution to a problem that achieves ‘buy-in’ from all parties
  • A key partnership mechanism is the Global Compact, an international multi-stakeholder initiative which brings companies together with UN agencies, governments, labour and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles.
  • With specific regard to tourism, as far back as 1999, the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UN-CSD) identified that sustainable tourism development ‘cannot be successful without a profound collaboration with all stakeholders’] It stressed the importance of involving small and large-scale tourism operators in solving problems;

  • One of the most important issues facing the world today is poverty and how to alleviate it. The MDGs aim to eradicate extreme poverty and halve the number of workers living on less than one US dollar a day, among other aims. Tourism creates economic opportunity through employment business linkages, and other income-generating possibilities -and therefore has the potential to reduce poverty
  • This needs to be addressed so that traditions and local culture are carried through the generations and not watered down or commercialised
  • Despite its potential for negative impacts, tourism by its very nature also offers a mechanism through which to address issues and achieve positive outcomes.
  • No industry is more customer-focused than tourism -satisfying people’s needs, desires and dreams. But as well as ensuring the well-being of its clients there are others whose well-being is fundamental to the sustainability of any tourism enterprise:
  • Tourism can seriously damage the environment at both global and local level if it is not developed and operated responsibly:
  • The negative effects of poorly-planned hotel and tourism infrastructure development can place an intolerable strain upon natural systems, particularly in terms of demand for water and the effect of its treatment and disposal.
  • Too many tourists visiting fragile archaeological and architectural sites of historic and cultural significance
  • Various types of partnership have been formed to address the issues relating to sustainable tourism development and are supported by the case studies on these and the following pages:
  • To be successful, partnerships need:
  • appropriate stakeholders
  • organisations or individuals
  • mutually agreed goals and processes
  • sensitivity to the power balance between members
  • the ability to accept compromise
  •
The power of partnerships The tourism industry is partnering with other organizations to solve problems on how to bring a more sustainable tourism. Global impact is an international multi-stakeholders consensus to bring together companies, UN agencies, government and communities to support environment. The project need not only for NGOs to facilitate contracts but also for governments to have the right legislations dealing with sustainable tourism. Tourism can affect three key areas: * Communities: Tourism creates economic opportunity but should not affect negatively traditions and local cultures. * Individuals: Tourism should be creating the right safe working environment. * Environment: Tourism should not damage the environment. Any waste should be disposed of properly. Tourism can achieve positive impacts on the region such as funding wild life conservations. There are se several partnerships that develop to better control the tourism industry and its impacts on the region. To be successful a partnership must have appropriate stakeholders, mutually agreed goal and process, and sensitivity to the power members among other characteristics.

Fragmentation nixed a Cisco-Android network partnership | ITworld - 0 views

  • Cisco has a partnership that makes Apple devices work better, but it tried Android first
  •
Cisco systems, one of the worlds leading multinational technology companies, partnered with Apple to provide users a seamless experience when it comes to work related applications. The Cisco-Apple partnership occurred in 2015, however Cisco recently released that they originally tried to partner with Android. Why did the collaboration go sour? Well Android has multiple manufactures and an open source OS, meaning that the Cisco had to approach each in order to solidify the use of there network. The company didn't have enough resources to do so, so they ventured to Apple, who fully controls its systems and new releases. The integration and use of Cisco network allows Apple users to do things like "shift voice calls from carriers to wireless LAN without losing things like call logging for compliance".
  •
There are several advantages to utilizing Apple systems and partnering with the, As you mentioned, they control their systems and new releases. They are also have more users than other systems for their mobile devices. This was a very smart decision by Cisco to drive their business.

Guestline Forms a Strategic Partnership with Luxury Hotel Group, City and Country Hotels - 0 views

  • Using one centralised system provides the best all round option for our needs to standardise reporting, provide opportunities to expand our reservation delivery in the future and fully understand the value of our clients across our group
  • Being web-based, deployment of Guestline's solutions is simple and removes the need to install servers on-site
  • "Guestline stood out from the other solution providers on the market due to the complete package they offered – not only being able to provide the technical solutions we were looking for, but also their guaranteed future support and customer service, and the simplicity of installing and using their systems,"
  •
As the title indicates, this article discusses the partnership between Guestline (Europe's leader in software solutions for the hospitality industry) and City and Country Hotels. This collaboration will consist of equipping The Wellesley London and Number Ten Manchester Street (both properties of C&C Hotels) with Guestline Web-based PMS. This system will provide C&C Hotels with a set of features including cross-selling functionalities. In other words, booking sales will be transferred to another property if the requested hotel is full. Thus, City and Country Hotels will be able to maximize productivity (no more calling from property to property to inquire if there are any rooms available, etc) and increase revenue thanks to the seamless integration of both properties into a centralized web-based PMS. The best thing about this partnership is that City and Country Hotels will also cut down hardware and software costs thanks in part to the use of a cloud-based system. Having Guestline has their provider of all technical solutions, City and Country Hotels will be able to place their focus on their revenue makers - their guests.

Availpro and Premier Hotels of the World announce extended partnership - 0 views

  • CEO of Premier Hotels of the World™ Mr. Martin Fabiano states: "We are excited to announce the partnership with Availpro, which will give our Member Hotels a distinct advantage over other Groups."
  •
The Availpro organization is the hospitality industry leader in online distribution. Its mission is to provide hotel owners with the most effective online sales platform. Using the tagline, 'The World is your hotel Marketplace,' Availpro has helped thousands of hotels worldwide sell over ten million rooms by utilizing a highly developed extranet channel. Availpro's extranet channels provide two-way connectivity to over one hundred distribution websites. With a larger scope of distribution the hotels using Availpro increase their sales and become more efficient. In addition, Availpro's management of these extranet channels saves hotels valuable time. However the reason Availpro is the leader in online distribution is not just its booking capabilities but rather its recent developments that together provide their clients an online distribution extranet solution. The booking engines that made Availpro successful expanded to include mobile applications and social booking with Facebook. Availpro also introduced important decision-making tools such as the Smart Channel Manager, Rate Screener and Guest Satisfaction. I was curious about the 'Rate Screener' so I read Availpro's article "Availpro rate screener allows Hotel owners to sell their rooms at best rate," published on October 17th 2011 (http://www.hospitalitynet.org/news//4053349.html). This tool was developed with user input and tested in real life rate decision scenarios. The all-in-one solution allows managers to see their rates, inventory and competitor rates on a central distribution schedule. By analyzing their competition in real time managers are able to optimize their rates. Long gone are the days when managers used to call the local competition and pretend to be walk-in guests to find out fire sale rates. This most recent article, published on the third of January 2012, discusses Availpro's growing partnership with Premier Hotels of the World™. By incorporating Availpro's ex

Management Software Partnership Brings Big Savings - 0 views

  •
Last week, one of the leading web-based property management systems announced a partnership with the world's largest B2B deal community in order to save hotel owners and managers money. The partnership comes between management software company, Frontdesk Anywhere, and B2B services and software community, GroupPrice.com. It is a partnership that Frontdesk Anywhere founders are promising will allow managers and hotel owners to cut their costs and grow their business faster. Frontdesk Anywhere customers are getting a special discount of 15 percent off their first GroupPrice buy. Things like social media, PR, and video are being offered at the best deals through the partnership that should allow for increased revenue and profit. I believe the whole idea of software partnerships will continue to become more popular as the use of the Internet is becoming more widespread in the hospitality community. Packaging of several different services can increase productivity. Frontdesk Anywhere has reportedly managed hotel stays for more than 60,000 guests. This cloud-based software makes it simple to add other features, like combining other company software, in order to create the best experience for the business and the customer.

Another rumour quashed then - Amadeus backs growing anti-Google lobby | Tnooz - 0 views

  • The floodgates have opened – last week’s frenzy of activity, when Expedia and then TripAdvisor submitted complaints to the European Commission about Google, has clearly triggered something. To paraphrase, as both pretty much argue the same thing, the complaints centre on accusations of unfair practices in search which, the pair argue, is damaging the industry and consumers. No major surprises there, given that Expedia and TripAdvisor were original members of the FairSearch anti-Google lobbying group in the US. What raised just a few eyebrows was when, a few hours after TripAdvisor’s statement was released, ETTSA (European Technology and Travel Services Association) came out in support of the pair. ETTSA primarily represents the interests of the GDSs, as well as online travel agencies such as Expedia, Ebookers and Travelocity, in Brussels, but the decision to publicly back individual companies effectively puts the GDSs, under the umbrella of their representative body, also up against Google. Fast forward a few days and now Amadeus has decided to publicly back Expedia’s complaint to the EC.
  • Amadeus, alongside ETTSA, is particularly concerned about the likely impact of Google Flight Search, when it eventually expands outside of the current customer base of the US.
  • But for Amadeus, which just a few weeks ago saw its UK MD Diana Bouzebiba suggest again that Google needs partners in Europe, to now also come out in support of the anti-Googlers will speak volumes to those that have watched closely ever since June 2010, when Google first announced its acquisition of ITA Software. Clearly Amadeus is not expecting to be forming a major partnership with Google any time soon. Unless it is some kind of weird reverse psychology, of course.
  •
The contention between these OTA's and Google is a bit confusing and requires further research, but I think what is essentially at hand is severe competition. Google Flight has implications to cross over into OTA territory, which puts GDS's in a difficult position: support the OTA's or enter another profitable partnership with Google. Amadeus seems to be backtracking on its stance regarding new Google Flight Search, originally implying forming a partnership with Google, and now stating it is taking the sides of "anti-Googlers Expedia and TripAdvisor.

  •
Although I am a supporter of property management systems, I do find this article to be rather intriguing. Apparently, this group in Texas, Genares, has teamed up with RDX to eliminate the middle man as well as confusion from booking. What the partnership will do is reduce the amount that a hotel will spend on their PMS because it won't be utilized as much as it previously was. RDX is a two way connectivity system, which means that it can gain access to more than one access point at a time. Not only will this make it easier to make reservations, but the constant communication will allow for faster and more accurately detailed information.

  • "The partnership between O3b Networks and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. continues to expand, and the real winners are the guests and crew aboard the most innovative ships at sea. The alliance is based on a shared mission built on the belief that the Internet should always be within reach - on land and at sea."
  •
Royal Caribbean and O3b Networks have again signed a multi-year contract. O3b will once again be providing "high-speed satellite-delivered broadband service" to the Allure of the Seas. The system used is O3bMaritime and Royal Caribbean was one of the first cruise lines to use this system. This system will be on their two largest ships the Oasis and the Allure based in the Caribbean. It is also the only system that is on par with telecommunication standards on land. Soon O3b will deliver more bandwidth on these two ships than on all other cruise ships in the Caribbean. I personally feel internet access really lacks on many of the cruise lines right now and feel Royal Caribbean is taking a step in the right direction with O3b. My family and I like to cruise a lot and have received very spotty internet access around the globe. In today's world many people still have to check up on work while on vacation or keep in contact with family, it only makes sense for cruise lines to start working on faster internet comparable to on land. I read various cruise line message boards and this is a common complaint about slow internet access or virtually none. In the current economy where all the various lines are in competition against one another, this gives Royal Caribbean a leg up in the competition. Additionally, my understanding the only region where satellite internet is unavailable is off the coast of Japan due to government regulations. This system makes sense to have available one day in more regions.
  •
I for one am very happy to hear this news. I too have experienced the snail-paced internet "access" on cruise ships. With the high cost per minute and slow speeds, cruisers can't help but feel that they wasted their money. This definitely gives Royal Caribbean an advantage over Carnival, NCL and other large cruise lines. By implementing O3b networks on their two largest and most popular ships, they will reach their target consumer and help spread the word.

Though the idea of seamless online booking connectivity seems to be a good thing, it still appears to rely primarily on the hotels existing relationships with the major booking websites. Without those, the investment in the advanced technology may not provide the ROI that the hotels are looking for.

Marriott partners with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba - 1 views

  • Marriott will be able to curate content, programming and promotions for the Chinese traveler
  •
I'm now used to seeing a lot of partnerships among hospitality companies -- making it a worldwide trend. The partnership of hotel company, Marriott, and e-commerce conglomerate, Alibaba, resulted in expanding the online travel footprint of both companies. As a result, Chinese travelers find it easier to book hotel rooms across all the brands managed by Marriott. In addition, travelers are able to use Alibaba's mobile payment platform during their stays at Marriott-branded hotels. It's a win-win situation! This partnerships broadens the level of services available to consumers. It comes to show that Marriott and Alibaba have used the proper e-business strategies to succeed in our digital economy.
  •
It is interesting to see how the hospitality industry is also globalizing their business in order to tap into new markets. Marriott has successfully expanded thanks to its Starwood acquisition. Its partnership with Alibaba will create a stronger presence in China. They have forecasted that their customer base will grow to 2 billion customers in the next 20 years and will tap into Alibaba's loyal customer platform. According to Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson, "What we want to do is make sure that a Chinese traveler has what they most want when they show up at our hotels". I think they will be able to achieve this with the inclusion of Alipay, Alibaba's wallet-free travel program which is commonly used. Understanding what customers' preferences and needs are will surely attract and possibly lead to more room for expansion.

As discussed in the first video lecture, accounting within the hospitality industry can define many different functions, from back of house and point of sale, to data mining and backups. Aptech Computer Systems, Inc. is expanding their services to include payroll and HR capabilities by partnering with Inova Payroll.

Southwest Will Put Content on GDSs: Business Travel News - 0 views

  • Southwest Airlines at long last will provide content and full booking capabilities in global distribution systems via agreements with Travelport and Amadeus
  • Southwest president Tom Nealon said the GDSs are the "third leg of the stool" in Southwest's distribution strategy for business travel, the other two being direct channels and the Swabiz booking tool.
  • Southwest has rolled all those approaches and its recently revamped sales team into a newly named Southwest Business umbrella

  • Southwest projects that the GDS presence will bring between $10 million and $20 million in additional revenue during the second half of 2020
  • "The shift away from our [Basic Booking Request] and the basic approach to an industry-standard GDS is important.
  • "We have a great business product, but we've been harder to do business with in terms of how you book, transact and settle," Nealon said
  • "We're going to compete hard and compete to win
  •
In sum, this article discusses the long awaited partnership with Southwest airlines and global distribution channels Amadeus and Travelport. The article demonstrates the benefits of implementing GDS in the hospitality industry. According to the article, installing GDS will enable Southwest Airlines to improve its level of participation by allowing buyers to not only book but also to "change, change, cancel, and modify reservations" via the system.
