      While the "principle duty is to direct the patron's attention to those items that the operator desires to sell...", the printed menu, when used, must also reflect the atmosphere the operator decides to convey. For many concepts, the tablet menu would certainly enhance that element but I am not sure that this technology would do anything other than distract from the intended atmosphere.

In the end, it may be necessary to maintain up to date physical menus to have for backup at all times.

      Certainly, this is a very important detail. Baby Boomers and older Generation Xers involved in this study prefer this technology over traditional menus; these are generations usually not associated with embracing newer technology - while Millennials tend to embrace technology more readily.

      Although I have significant concerns that this kind of technology could decrease the dynamic of the relationship between the live server and the guest, data in this study convinces me that there is a time and a place to use this technology to "enhance" the guest experience. I do not see this as a cost savings (rather, it may be more costly to use this technology) but as a revenue generator. The danger is in allowing serving staff members to get lazy and rely on the tablet rather than their own skills.

I feel that this way of advertising is easy and fun; people love using technology and what better way to incorporate it then by using your Smartphone! In the article they asked different fast food restaurants if they would use this product and although they thought it was a good idea they felt that it would be taking away from a fast paced environment. In the article it states that traditional media is not what it use to be, ""There are billions of dollars being spent on it, and [traditional ads] are driving consumers to the stores, but at that point consumers still don't know what they're going to buy." Overall, I feel that this product would bring in a lot of customers and it's a great way to advertise things on the menu, I'm all for this idea!

Options exist to utilize mobile technology. There are advantages of this including consistent access to data and less equipment is needed on site. Hard Terminals as well as mobile options currently exist so that the retail location can make decisions that fit the needs of that specific location. Another advantage is that staff no longer need to do as much manual work with the equipment. What took several hours now does not. A common concern with using the cloud is local internet outage. However, a 4G solution is available that turns the operation into wifi. Also, back ups are part of the cloud, so no information is lost. There are enhancements available or in development including QR Codes and mobile ordering via a tablet or smartphone. Once these devices are more common than not, more hospitality locations will move to cloud based systems.

Point of sales, or retail transactions, have been around since humans were created. Cash transactions took place between consumers and merchants, and the cash was kept in a box. The cash register, a mechanical cash box, was the first real POS System that kept track of revenues. It wasn't until businesses started using barcodes that the POS really started to change. Merchants could process sales more quickly and accurately. Restaurants were among the first to use mobile POS systems. Staff could process credit cards at the table, and place orders without ever having to write an order down. Apple, for example, eliminates the cash register altogether and handles all transactions from hand-held devices. These new systems of POS reduce labor costs and increase productivity. The elimination of written orders increases the accuracy of servers and gives customers a better quality of service. The future of the POS System is bright. Restaurants have created iPhone apps that allow customers to place their orders before they even reach the restaurant, while others let servers carry around a small computer that allows them to process transactions from wherever they are. Even more advancements are beginning to take place. Encrypted card readers and contact less payment methods will increase the security of mobile POS systems. Eventually a person's cell phone will be able to be passed over a terminal and act as a credit card. These advancements are ultimately to create more time for the guest and the business as well as make shopping more automatic. In today's society where people are controlled by the need to shop, a more automatic type of transaction is the best invention.
