While food trucks have become extremely popular these days, they have been around as early as the 1800's! Before the gourmet food trucks started to pop up, street vendors selling hot dogs, pretzels and lunch food for office workers have been around for decades. Now with more and more people out of work or people who want the ability to be more creative with their own food with a small budget, food trucks have become more popular.  However some cities have restrictions such as Chicago, where a food truck cannot be parked within 200 feet of a restaurant.  LA, the government limits the number of permits issued for mobile food vendors because of the street congestion it produces.  Permits are also limited because traditional restaurants don't want to compete with the low priced street vendors.

Casino Hits Labor Savings Jackpot with Preventative Maintenance Management | Case Studies | | Hospitality Magazine (HT) - 0 views

  • Showalter knew that in order to keep guests happy – and willing to make return visits – facility managers in the hospitality industry must solve an array of challenges that range from maintaining glittering casino lights and complex HVAC systems to staying on top of repairs for simple ice machines, kitchen appliances and outdoor sprinklers. Having an efficient way to track those repairs, whether it involves repeat malfunctions in an air conditioner in a guest room or a commercial mixer in the kitchen, is vital to maintenance operations.
  • Showalter bemoaned the fact that in the past engineers would fix problems but without written records of the repair, management didn’t know if they were fixing the same problem. It was impossible to see patterns of repeat malfunctions. “Now with Bigfoot, we can keep track of what’s been done,” Showalter says. “We’ve saved a lot of time by not having our technicians go back to do the same repair job multiple times on end.”
  • Showalter chose to meet his maintenance challenges with the help of a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). He selected a web-based program called Bigfoot CMMS, produced by the Smartware Group, Inc.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • By establishing PMs on guest room assets, Showalter’s maintenance team can quickly address customer complaints, from running toilets and dripping faucets to malfunctioning air conditioners.
  •
This is a great example of Preventive Maintenance systems for a hotel. Before implementing their their computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), it was very difficult for the Silver Reef Casino Management to know the 'history' of the products they were fixing and replacing, and whether this was something they had fixed before. The article also highlights the importance of quality management of rapid response and PM and how it directly relates to the guest relations and satisfaction. I have worked in hotels that offer very little to no PM, and from experience I know this makes everything harder and the service be more reactive than proactive. Hotels that are serious about their guest will definitely have a system to track defects and the work being done proactively.

Coming from a catering and cooking background I was happy to discover how many ways AR is being used. As soon as we started exploring this topic the first thing that came to mind was what an amazing selling tool this would be. Whenever i sit with clients they always ask me if I have pictures of parties we have done and food we have served. Being able to show it to them with a 3D perspective will make it all the more appealing. The goal of your first meeting with a client is to make them excited about what you have to offer and make not decide not to meet with any other caterers! Take it a step further and what an amazing selling tool it would be if you could say take a picture of a persons backyard where the party is being held and you could place a picture of your buffet so they can actually visualize what it will look like. I am very excited about the potential of this technology

  • New developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence, twinned with more efficient and effective data capture, look likely to have a significant impact on the restaurant world in the coming years
  • Companies such as tech giant Acrelec, for example, are harnessing artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide menu recommendations based on other factors. In Acrelec’s case, its technology learns what menu items are typically purchased together to give customer more intelligent recommendations

  • Developers are also already working on digital menus that change depending on the user. So, for example, a customer who has shared data about their allergies or diet choices, such as being vegan or vegetarian, will only see menu items that meet this criteria
  • Restaurant groups including SSP, Big Table, Boparan Restaurant Group and Din Tai Fung are among those trialling robotic waiters designed to support staff members with tasks such as delivering food and clearing tables
  • As recruitment challenges continue to bite, more restaurant groups are likely to look to automation for help
  • Could machine learning stop restaurant operators avoid opening the wrong venue in the wrong place? That’s the pitch from US company Borne, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse a wide range of data points to help predict the viability of a concept in a particular location
  • The company says that through ‘superior analysis and pattern identification’ its The Borne Report service can reduce restaurant failures by eliminating what most would agree is the root cause of closures - the wrong site in the wrong place
  • intuitive technology that automatically adjusts aspects such as lighting, volume and music tempo in a restaurant based on a number of important factors, such as that offered by tech company Startle
  • Tech start-up Karakuri has developed an ‘automated frying solution’ that can integrate with existing systems to drop fries and other items when required. As well as labour savings, the company says food waste is reduced thanks to portion control technology that ensures fry baskets are filled with the right amount of product to match demand
  • The company even considers the likely mood impact of music using a model of neuro-typical responses to individual tracks
  • Startle also provides digital signage and can set rules that change what’s on the screens depending on the weather or footfall, such as ice cream promotions during heat waves, or hot drinks during cold spells.
  • Chris Sanderson, founder of shiftworking marketplace limber, believes that apps such as his will give rise to the ‘portfolio career’.
  • employers embracing tech to pull from a larger pool of staff and lower the barrier to entry for new joiners
  • The pitch of apps such as limber is that they can help hospitality businesses connect with a growing generation of talent who are looking to work more flexibly and help them hire
