What is a Global Distribution System (GDS)? 2022 Guide for Hotels - 3 views

  • What is a Global Distribution System (GDS)? 2020 Guide for Hotels
  • The History of the GDS
  • a GDS functions as a middleman between a travel agent and a hotel’s (or airline’s) central reservation system. Travel agents can see real-time rates and inventory for a given hotel via the GDS, though the GDS doesn’t actually hold its own inventory.
  • ...14 more annotations...
  • Besides the time savings, the GDS allows travel agents to tap into reservation systems for a world of travel providers.
  • What are the Most Popular Global Distribution Systems?
  • Did you know you could book a flight, tour operator, car rental or hotel room in real-time via electronic GDS systems since the 1960s? You may be thinking, “hmm… online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com aren’t that old, are they?” But years before the OTAs gained prominence, global distribution systems provided real-time access to hotel and flight inventory for travel agent service providers across the world.
  • The GDS industry has come a long way since the 60s; while Sabre is still a major player, several GDS companies operate today. The major global distribution systems for travel reservations include: Amadeus is the world’s largest GDS, accounting for about 40% of GDS transactions, and it’s especially popular in Europe. Though many of these reservations are for airfare, it’s still a powerful tool for hotels, with over 600,000 hotels connected. Sabre is the second-largest GDS, accounting for about 35% of travel agency bookings. Around 175,000 hotels are connected to Sabre, but its portfolio in North America is larger than its competitors. Travelport GDS  owns systems called Galileo, Worldspan, and Apollo. Travelsky is a state-run GDS in China.
  • Does the GDS still serve a purpose when travelers can easily book directly with the airline or hotel? In many cases, yes, the GDS still delivers value, especially for airlines and corporate travel companies. Airlines still distribute their inventory to OTAs via the GDS, and corporate travel planners continue to use the GDS to find corporate rates.
  • American Airlines was the first company, in partnership with IBM, to implement an electronic reservation system for their reservations agents to use. This new technology, called the Semi-Automated Business Research Environment (SABRE), allowed American Airlines to greatly expand their reservations team beyond the number of people who could huddle around the paper booking files.
  • For hotels, airlines, and the like, the GDS offers massive marketing power.
  • No one GDS can be called the “best” travel service provider, since they all provide similar functionality and have their own unique differences.
  • travel comp
  • With decades of history and an enormous user base of travel agents, using the GDS can be a great way to expand your hotel’s marketing and distribution strategy. But the GDS doesn’t necessarily provide value to every hotel; if you’re wondering how to use the GDS or why to add it as a distribution channel, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons for your individual hotel.
  • No one GDS can be called the “best” travel service provider, since they all provide similar functionality and have their own unique differences.
  • hotels would need to undertake huge marketing efforts in order to be seen by travel agents. The GDS effectively democratized this process, with chain hotels getting the same visibility on the GDS as independent hotels.
  • Today you can book not only airfare and hotels via the GDS, but also rental cars, cruises, rail tickets, and tours.
  • In 2006 the volume of internet reservations exceeded GDS reservations for the first time,

A brief history of the GDS gives us a glimpse of the important this technology which as been around for over 50 yrs. Although it has evolved, the consumer has evolved with it but the basic idea still prevail and still very much in use.
  •
This article gives a complete description of what the GDS is and its history. It goes over how the GDS works, the benefits of using it, and whether the GDS has a role in the future of global distribution.
  •
A GDS or Global distribution system can come in handy for many different purposes. Some of these companies such as Expedia and Travelocity are know ones in the United States. It is important to weight pros and cons when deciding who to book with when choosing a hotel or an airlines especially since there are so many options. Depending on how you book especially when bundling with a GDS you could get a great deal.
  •
This article evaluates the past and current roles of GDS in the travel and tourism industry. It is clear that the GDS has adapted and changed with the times and now is able to do even more than at its initial conception. However, as the article pointed out the all the functions of the GDS it is clear that OTA's ad websites are also able to provide a lot of these same functions. We discussed this week whether the GDS system is still currently a relevant system and most agreed that it is. However, as we look to the future it will be interesting to see what evolutions the GDS has yet to go through and how it will attempt to remain relevant in the ever changing tourism market.

It also helps to save the time on the administrative functions. More communications are available and employees are easier to communicate as well.
  •
The biggest benefit that we can get from HRIS is the productivity. All the tasks that HR department is doing can be done by pen and paper and it has been using for past years. However, companies including hotels now want to run HR department more efficiently. This program help to reduce labor cost but improve communication with employees. On top of this benefits, it has much more advantages. However, there are still small hotels not using this program because of their financial budget. Once again, it is not a mandatory program as PMS but it is necessity.

  • When the decision to build a human resources information systems department is made, examine the options carefully and be aware of technology and human resources trends for a small business. Small businesses have unique needs based on company goals for growth, or a plan to remain small with access to technology without the hefty costs. The term "human resources information systems" (HRIS) often is used interchangeably with human resources management system (HRMS) and human resources information technology (HRIT). Any of these terms is used to describe the computer and information technology a company utilizes to automate human resources functions and employment actions.

This article summarized the advantages and disadvantages of using human resource information system. An HRIS is used for employment actions such as applicant tracking, performance management, attendance, compensation and benefits management, work force analyses, and scheduling. A very popular use of HRIS is employee self-service. There are a lot of advantages of HRIS, such as it is monitored by qualified specialists who know technology and HR functional and tactical processes can manage compliance with federal and state laws, streamline processes for recruitment and selection, and produce analyses, data and reports for internal and external use. It saves a lot of time. The disadvantages included that HRIS may involve human error during information input, costly technology to update the system and malfunctions or insufficient applications to support the human resources needs. The article highlighted describes some advantages and disadvantages of a Human Reources Information System for small business, that would include restaurants. The decision maker would have to take in consideration what type of information the system will need to handle in order to select the system to be used. This systems can do applicant tracking, perfomance management, attendance, compensatio, benefitios, paid time off and etc. A type of disadvantage for small businesses would be to be able to get support from somebody to manage the system. This could have high costs involved.

This article discusses Human Resource Information Systems and the benefits and disadvantages to investing in such a program. Some of the advantages that the article addresses are: "manage compliance with federal and state laws, streamline processes for recruitment and selection, and produce analyses, data and reports for internal and external use." The technology allows employees and managers to "locate answers and information quickly without the need to consult an HR representative every time." I feel that this advantage outweighs any of the disadvantages that there may be. The benefits of a business/hotel running more smoothly are infinitely rewarding to profits and many other aspects of convenience. Some of the disadvantages that the article addresses are insufficient applications to support the human resource department, as well as it being costly.

This article describes Human Resource Information systems and the benefits and disadvantages to investing in this type of technology. The article states that the advantages to investing are: "being able to manage compliance with federal and state laws, streamline processes for recruitment and selection, and produce analyses, data and reports for internal and external use." Most importantly though, the article states, "The employee and manager self-service features are excellent ways to free up the time of your human resources staff members for project work and other duties. Employees and managers can locate answers and information quickly without the need to consult an HR representative every time." This, to me, outweighs any disadvantage that may come from investing in HRIS technology because the convenience that this technology provides could really benefit profits for a business. HRIS is about coordinating communication among different departments. Businesses should really invest in this technology, even though it is costly, because ultimately it will increase profits by getting things done faster and more efficiently, as well as preventing problems from happening before they happen.
  •
With the development of high-tech management system, HRIS is no long strange for us. The HRIS is a software or online solution to data tracking, data management, or all of the data needs of the company within the human resources department. The reason why HRIS is becoming  more popular is that it has some useful functions such as the employee self-service through which employees can find answers to common questions by themselves while not ask a human resources representative. This system can help to save time and money for the company in certain aspects. But in this article, the author compares the advantages and disadvantages that HRIS brings to the company. The disadvantages can be that it may involve human errors during information input, costly technology update and so on. So if a company wants to apply this system, it should also look at these disadvantages, compare them with the advantages and then make a final decision in order to avoid suffering from the bad sides of the system.
  •
The HRIS is used for applicant tracking, performance management, attendance, compensation and benefits management, work force analyses, and scheduling. HRIS can be also used for employee self-service. The human resources department staff can find answers to common questions they would have asked a human resources representative from the HRIS. HRIS has many advantages. It can help organization manage compliance with laws, streamline processes for recruitment and selection, and produce analyses, data and reports. The ease of use for qualified specialists, accuracy of information and the ability to perform HR audits using any combination of parameters. However, there are still some disadvantages, such as human error during information input, costly technology to update your system and malfunctions or insufficient applications to support human resources needs. In addition, the cost of hiring an HRIS specialist is also a problem for the small business.

Shift4 supports Google Wallet | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • Shift4 Corporation now supports Google Wallet on four newly integrated Ingenico PIN pads. The Shift4 interfaces for these four new devices – the Ingenico iSC250, iSC350, iPP320, and iPP350 – also support swipe-ahead functionality, meaning customers can swipe their cards (or touch their phones) and then enter their PIN (or signature) before the merchant finishes ringing up the order. Once the order is completed, customers simply approve the amount, get their receipt, and are on their way. In busy retail environments, the short time saved by this option quickly adds up.
  • The new NFC functionality integrates seamlessly with Shift4's existing DOLLARS ON THE NET® features including TrueTokenization® and 4Go®. It is now available to Shift4 merchants running the most recent version of Shift4's Universal Transaction Gateway®. Currently, the aforementioned devices are supported with no modification required to the Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
  •
Shift4 develops payment technology for various types of business. The hotel I work in uses it to process gift cards. This article describes the company's newest endeavor with emerging technologies, in this case Google Wallet. Companies using Shift4 will now have the functionality of letting customers use Google Wallet, paying for a purchase by tapping or swiping your cell phone on a special screen, in a seamless integration with their current POS. Google Wallet or the iPhone Square Card Reader are technologies that businesses need to take into consideration when developing or enhancing their POS. Shift4 seems to be the front runner in offering this add-on. I imagine other payment developers will follow suit.

  • Network computing has enormous implications for marketing to customers on a global basis, as well as hotel operations. Consider the potential for the industry to connect with vendors worldwide for electronic purchasing, potentially achieving economies of scale and leveraging not yet possible. World purchasing functions will allow companies to customize their own catalogs. Virtual channels of distribution using computer networking capabilities will also allow hotel companies to market products and services - some traditional to our industry, others not - to customers whether they are in the hotel, at work, or at home. This will require a migration from today's central reservation systems to tomorrow's customer information systems using network-centric solutions. Development of customer profiles and guest recognition will make it possible for hotel organizations to interact in entirely new ways with customers, regardless of their physical location. Clearly, the large hotel companies will need to be the first to address questions raised by global networking capabilities and what this will mean in terms of technology investment. But for many hospitality companies presently struggling with the high cost of technology and the confusing state of our industry's technology affairs, this will not be an easy task. And the decisions will ultimately become further complicated by the opportunity to outsource certain functions into subscription-based networks. It is unlikely that the hospitality industry will be forced to bear the entire burden for networking infrastructure. Strategic alliances with major technology companies will be the catalysts in building this capability as they become strategic providers of networking capabilities to hospitality and other industries. And as network-centric computing comes of age and a company's proprietary information is stored in cyberspace, security will become an ever-more important issue requiring solutions. Whether it is an e-mail gateway through an internal network or customer access via the Internet, network fire walls and encryption systems will be required to mitigate the concern many will have with system security.

The solutions that hotel organizations will be able to choose from in terms of networking should also be less expensive than the current profile of technology spending. And we can expect that change to occur sooner rather than later, given the present rate of investment in Internet-based technologies.

"Investing in Technology for Competitive Advantage - The Challenge Facing the Hospitality Industry" sheds light on how the necessity of the investment in technology is in the hospitality industry. Not investing in technology affects even the customer services. It is mentioned that there are at least 85 property management systems available offered to owners and managers of hotels by technology providers which tend to meet the real needs of those. Further, open system that could be widely used is needed to acquire by hotel organizations. The more creative hospitality organizations are, the more successful would be in future. It is also indicated the technology cycles. Simply, technology would be increasingly required in future because of that the investment in technology would give a lot of opportunities to different parts in this industry.

Investing in the hospitality industry as it relates to information technology is one of the ways the industry will stay current and be able to compete in this fast pace environment. More and more guest are demanding exceptional, cutting edge customer service. As this investment occurs there needs to be integration of hardware and software for the future. These choices are not easy and is perhaps one of the greatest challenges that the industry faces. Timing and knowledge is critical to investing in technology because innovation is moving so fast, therefore knowing what new development to purchase and the ability to integrate existing systems into new one is important. In conclusion, it is paramount for investors to be mindful of the market place and to get as much inputs into the decision that is made for maximum results.

The Role of Global Competer Reservation Systems in the Travel Industry Today and in the... - 0 views

  • the best known global CRSs are AMADEUS, GALILEO, SABRE, and WORLDSPAN with AMADEUS being the only one which is largely owned by European airlines. Together with GALILEO, it is the leading system in the European market. GALILEO, however, also has a strong position in the US market after it merged with an American system. SABRE and WORLDSPAN have been developed in the US. So far, SABRE is the only CRS which is wholly owned by one single airline.

      CRS definition
  • he network of the global CRS AMADEUS has additional 14 network nodes distribers who thus have the latest information about availability at any point in time and can use it as a basis for a new offer. In addition, the system can also store customer related information such as e.g. all services provided to a certain customer, type of payment, service information etc. ♦ Fare Quote & Ticketing: Just like the product presentation, the fare quote, ticketing and voucher generating process depend on the type and the complexity of the services offered. For flights, multiple fares are being offered which differ according to the reservation category, the date of the journey, the day when the reservation was made, the route and the length of the stay. That means that practically each fare needs to be calculated individually. In addition, fare quotes can change daily. The prices of other service providers, however, are relatively fixed so that in most cases, they stay an unchanged part of the offer. For the ticketing, travel agencies receive a fixed number of ticket forms which may only be used after confirmation has been availability of particular reservation categories and possibly the fare. It may, however, be difficult to describe the products of other service providers appropriately with only a limited amount of information. Hotels, for example, have so far only been able to provide information about the price, the size of the bed and its approximate location which alone is not a meaningful description for potential customers. For this reason, it is intended to link the particular offers to visual multimedia technology to be able to provide more detailed information to the customer. ♦ Reservation: The core function of reservation systems and the main reason for developing them is the reservation of offered services in the travel industry. To this end, a so called Passenger Name Record (PNR) or Guest Name Record (GNR) is created for each passenger or each group of passengers. These records contain all services-related customer information. At the same time, this information is transferred to the internal inventory system of all service providFigure 2 Principel structure of CRSs N N P pr S Fare Quote and T Hotel- or Car-Systems Travel Agencies Tourism Tourism Tourism Tourism Stickynote

  • The development of such systems was already started at the beginning of the sixties, the objective being at the time to automate seat reservations procedures of airlines. Today, the largest civil data centers and the most powerful communications networks are being used exclusively for this purpose.

Began for one purpose which is now expanded.
  • Today, the user has direct access to essential travel information and can find further information in all CRSs about trade shows, visa regulations, particular events etc. Furthermore, programs and interfaces have been developed which facilitate the internal administration for each travel agent. Also invoicing, accounting, customer and quota management increasingly depend on the respective CRS. User prompting has significantly improved so that even inexperienced users can easily learn how to work with the reservation procedure. Since more and more PCs are being used in this area modern user interfaces have been introduced.

      Weak point
  • There are two approaches which can help to reduce distribution costs. On the one hand, the on-line services provide additional possibilities of cost-effective direct distribution to the end customer. Many airlines now offer access to their internal service provider systems via on-line services and in particular via Internet. This also helps reducing costs incurred by travel agents and fees to the CRSs. O

  • Today employees work on the move, often from remote locations for days together. Lack of access is a handicap that hampers effective work. Always-accessible employee service systems are non-negotiable.

The author believes that the employer has to place themselves in the employees shoes in order to design a HRIS that is fully functional and extremely useful to an employee if they are unable to do this then the system would be of no purpose to the employees.
