Apple has created momentum for POS enhanced technology with it's announcement of the new Apple Pay platform. No longer will customers need to search wallets or purses for cash or credit cards to buy products, no longer will customers wait for and sign receipts. This new e-wallet tech will allow users to make fast transactions using their Apple smart phone. Major retail establishments such as McDonalds have signed on to promote and provide the necessary catalyst to make this technology mainstream. The benefits are very clear, with the increased transactional speeds promoting better customer service and also increased throughput at the retail counter. And this will also enable smaller companies enhance their profitability by utilizing such an easy purchase platform. How does this new tech work? Very simply, it users "near-field communication technology or NFC, which allows for the transfer of small amounts of data between two devices held closely to one another." Just tap your iPhone to the terminal and the transaction is complete. The concern for data security still exists, however "Industry experts will be watching as customers road-test Apple Pay." Apple Pay and similar products from Apple's competitors are the future. Businesses that embrace this technology will be in the enviable position to cater to tech-savvy customers and will see increased revenue as a result.

Entrepreneur Uses Technology to Make Wedding Planning More Transparent - 3 views

  • Tina Hoang-To got the idea to build Wedding Spot after planning her own wedding in late 2012. She felt overwhelmed by the stacks of wedding packets quickly taking over her coffee table, and the thought of researching hundreds of wedding venues was exhausting.
  • a big opportunity to create a company that could help brides plan their dream weddings without going through all the stress
  • Consumer behavior has evolved drastically since the introduction of the Internet
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Working directly with venues, Wedding Spot gathers all the information required to allow newly engaged couples to easily search for venues based on budget, location, style and guest count. Users can "build out" their ideal wedding day by selecting specific services and options to get an instant price quote and then book a site tour with one click of a button
  • On average, our venues are booking one wedding for every three appointments that we set up, which is a striking contrast to the low-single-digit conversion rates for the wedding industry
  • many sites with a ton of information about wedding venues, but none of them answered the most important question — what would it cost to have a wedding there? Couples would have to email, call or even visit venues just to get a basic wedding information packet with rental fees
  • successful because we were founded at a time when consumers are used to searching for things online and venues are definitely more open to providing transparency in pricing
  • demo our product to venues using an online meeting tool, and our small sales team has been able to onboard hundreds of venues a month
  • online meeting and collaboration software
  • With each venue, we need to walk them through a quick demo of Wedding Spot and then start the process of gathering all the information we need to build out their venue-listing profile on our site
  •
I found this interesting interview of Tina Hoang-To by Jeanette Mulvey. Tina describes what led to the creation of Wedding Spot (the stress of her own wedding) and the growth her company is continually experiencing.  Wedding Spot allows couples to browse, price and compare wedding venues around their preferred location, eliminating the stress of having to visit a high number of different places in order to get of quote. As she described it, I realized it was very similar to what Yelp does for restaurants and bars.  I am not currently planning a wedding but I went browsing through the website and in my opinion this can prove to be an invaluable tool for brides and grooms to be as it saves them time and reduces their stress. It also has a feature that allows users to set a budget.  As more venues join Wedding Spot, I am sure it is only a matter of time before it is a necessary first step to planning a wedding and choosing a venue.

How Technology Is Changing the Role of Travel Agents | TTS - 2 views

  • “There’s an app for that!” Technology has already made it easier for travelers to book their own reservations, search the web for getaway destinations (and great travel packages), and run cost comparisons for their travel and accommodations – all through tapping the app.
  • GDSs, high traffic portal travel sites, and start-up agencies can access similar flight and hotel booking systems. This helps agents quickly filter travel options for their clients; it also enables travelers to do self-service booking independently of an agency.
  • Customer service is becoming easier, faster, and more cost-effective. Social media is one technology tool that enables a small staff to handle large numbers of inquiries, forward automated alerts to update travelers on delays and wait times and share interesting industry information
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Gamification is not just a newer cost-management incentive program. Gamification is another way technology is meeting travelers’ demands for more enriched travel experiences
  • Among the more important technologies, a travel agent must employ are mobile technology, social media, and the human touch.
  • Social media is one of the more significant tools major businesses are employing to build brand awareness and customer relationships.
  •
The role of travel agents has changed drastically over the last 30 years. When once you needed a travel agent to do all of your bookings for you, you now have access to all of these tools and can create your own travel experience. Therefore, today's travel agent needs to be tech savvy and must keep up with the trends and provide their clients with the most up to date travel information. They also must have an online presence, specifically social media that shows their "personality" and helps with marketing. As long as agents can keep up with the ever changing technologies, clients will go to agents for the "human touch" and real first hand experience.

Interesting perspective. To what extend are new technological add ons just a fad? A must have versus a nice to have? A mover and shaker impacting the bottom line versus just something that is trendy.

Is this mostly for small hotels that probably have combined management roles? If a hotel has a Manager for each area, wouldn't we already have all the information needed to inform business decisions?

The article titled "Deciphering ROI from tech investment can be complicated", explores how technology can be challenging within the hotel industry. It is important to note that hotels need to understand what components they need to include, and which are simply a waste of money. According to the author, "Some technology trends are elements that hotels need to survive, while some technology is simply a fad". It is important to keep an eye on consumer trends to filter out what will actually enhance guest experience. Nowadays, guests and staff need mobile needs to optimize their work processes. For some processes and technologies, the ROI may be almost immediate, but for others, they still require more time to see the investment. In terms of investing in technology, do you think room automation is always necessary? In my personal opinion, the more perks a room has, the more it may enhance the customer experience. Ultimately, it all depends on the hotel, its size and its investment opportunities.
  •
This article discussed how to pick the best technology for your company thus maximizing your ROI. Some technologies are necessary while others are just a fad and it is important to determine what your company needs. Guests are also demanding more tech advancements from hotels, the personal touch is not as important anymore. Mobile and digital payment tech is becoming more and more important. Lastly it is important to note that technology will not always fix a problem, it is up to the company to determine what the issue is and then learn how to implement technology that will assist, not just expect it to resolve on its own.
  •
Very interesting article that makes us question whether specific technological add-ons are must haves versus nice to haves to separate us from our neighbours. It also shows us that we cant often times quantify from an ROI perspective. It begs the question, does technology really set a hotel apart and how.

8 Functions Your Property Management System Needs - 2 views

  • A property management system (PMS) can be one of your property’s greatest assets. A good PMS streamlines everyday tasks and increases efficiency. However, a bad PMS can make your life miserable. A PMS should make your life easier, not harder. Here are the features you should look for when deciding which software product to use.
  • Housekeeping functionality will help keep properties of all sizes running smoothly. Your property management system should automate administrative tasks and create more efficient systems. A housekeeping report falls into this category.
  • Sales and Cancellations You also want to look for sales and cancellations functionality. These tools allow you to see today’s sales and cancellations so you can make the appropriate changes.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Calendar A calendar is a great way to visualize reservations and give yourself clarity. With an easy-to-read calendar, you are able to see availability and unlock new possibilities
  • Dashboard When you log in and open your property management system, a friendly, helpful dashboard should greet you. An easy-to-read and understandable dashboard provides an instant snapshot. With the right information, you’ll be able to complete tasks faster and easier. Your property management system should offer you a swift homepage that updates in real time.
  • Best Available Rates (BAR) BAR functionality allows you to control your rate plans. With BAR, you can manage promotions, employee rates, and respond to market conditions.
  • Payment Processor A payment processor built in to your PMS will help you streamline accounting and keep more accurate reports. If a PMS does not have a payment processor
  • Reporting Reports are an essential part to any property. We wrote three articles about reports you should run every night; one about revenue management, and another on learning revenue management secrets from big chain hotels. Needless to say, we believe reports and knowledge are the best way to take your property to the next level. Your property management system should have built-in reporting functionalities
  • Direct Booking Engine Choose a property management system with a commission-free booking engine. Direct bookings are among the most valuable sources of revenue for most properties.
  •
The articles discusses about the eight major function of PMS. The PMS has become on of the key factors for the operations in hotels. The system literally connects all the departments of the hotel under one umbrella. It is easier faster and useful for any hotel organization. The PMS should include these 8 parts: Dashboard: The dashboard should be simple and easily understood by the employees, this will make the check in and check out process quick, even in restaurants the staff would be able to handle orders from the guest quickly. Sales and Cancellation: This will provide a better daily picture about functioning of the hotel rooms. Calendar: This function will help in tracking the booking, noting down occupancy for a particular day. Housekeeping: The housekeeping department would be able to have a proper track of rooms, dirty, clean, dirty vacant and occupied. The housekeeping staff would not have ton call at the front desk all the time to check status of a particular room. Best available rate: The system will give a broader image of rates which needs to be set for the future months, comparing the sales from previous years. Direct booking engine: This what all the hotels wants, to save commission which needs to be provided to the third parties.

GDS hotel bookings via Expedia: growth, but for how long? - tnooz - 0 views

  • The commissions for these so-called GDS hotel bookings are about 10%.
  • Pegasus, the largest global switch provider that Expedia works with,
  • Our goal is to present our customers with the best “store”/shopping experience possible and we were finding that conversion on the GDS properties was nowhere near as strong as the properties we work with directly.

  • Unlike GDS listings, partner listings come with several perks:
  • They can also, presumably, introduce hotels to the Expedia experience and open the door to upselling later.
  • So it’s likely to remain a small channel.
  •
This article touches on GDS bookings and bookings via Expedia specifically. It is one of the most well-known websites used by consumers. Many don't know that cutting out Expedia and selling rooms via GDS systems only costs hotels about 10% of the share, which is much lower than the usual standard for bookings through other agencies. Some data from travelport showed that there was a 30% growth in GDS direct bookings in 2014. Some brands are taking GDS properties from their sites because they feel they don't offer the level of customer service they require. With this example it's clear to see that the relationship between the hotel, GDS systems and sites like Expedia, can get very complicated. Expedia acts as the middle person between the GDS systems like Pegasus and the customer using the site for booking. Each outlet provided for bookings has pros and cons, so it is best to do your research on what is best for your hotel.

The Pros and Cons of Restaurant Pay-at-the-Table Technology | Toast POS - 0 views

  • Pay-at-the-table apps are becoming increasingly popular among restaurants of all levels, from fast casual to fine dining
  • These apps started as a way for small businesses to streamline their payment processes and reduce technology overhead
  • And yet, many restaurants that have clung to the paper receipt model for years are moving this direction, as it saves the restaurant both time and money, increases profits and tips, and reduces waste. It also provides benefits to the customer, which makes pay-at-the-table even more appealing.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • In fact, only 41% of restaurants plan to be using tablets by the end of 2017
  • While 68% of diners agree that pay-at-the-table technology improves their experience, restaurant managers and trainers will need to research and test best practices in these situations to provide the customer with the optimal experience.
  • While pay-at-the-table speeds up this process, it can make some customers feel unwelcome to sit and enjoy one another’s company.
  • 1) Technology is Expensive
  • No point of sale system is perfect, but pay-at-the-table programs provide an option that reduces your overall spending on paper products, while also providing your customers with a sense of security. Add in the high morale due to increased tips and less wasted time, and your employees will be clamoring for pay-at-the-table options.
  • A pay-at-the-table system also gives customers the opportunity to use even more secure forms of payment like Samsung Pay or Google Wallet, which uses biometric information or passwords to securely store and transmit credit card numbers.
  • Because pay-at-the-table systems are designed using software best practices, they provide easy access to financial data for both customers and restaurants. Restaurants can connect easily to many accounting systems over an API port, automatically sending financial records and updating restaurant accounts without time-consuming and tree-killing paperwork.
  • Pay-at-the-table systems reduce trips back and forth to the POS terminal, which in turn decreases the time it takes to close the sale. This lets tables wrap up their meal and get back to their day quicker, and reduces friction due to split checks or servers multitasking while payments are being made. Some restaurants have seen increased table turn by 15 percent or more, which in turn increases revenue for the restaurant and increases customer happiness as they get to their table faster.
  • Restaurants are some of the worst offenders for waste in general, but getting rid of paper receipts help companies reduce their overall waste and receipt expenses. Paper receipts require purchasing rolls of paper and ink cartridges, or if you choose to use thermal paper you run the risk of exposing employees and customers to BPA, a known carcinogen.
  • Pay-at-the-table gives customers a sense of security knowing that they keep control of their credit card and its financial information
  • Pay-at-the-table is an investment when you factor in the cost of enough technology to reasonably serve the entire restaurants. Despite these expenses, you may find that the initial investment pays dividends because you avoid costly software updates and the eventual expense of a specialized POS register.
    • ngerv001

Convenience and efficiency should be the bread and butter behind any food operation. Restaurant owners have to worry about so many aspects from budgeting, staffing, scheduling, ordering, and everything else in between. The operational advantages with tablet POS systems are numerous. Typically tablet POS systems have a lower initial investment with hardware and software than traditional systems. This helps greatly reduce the overhead cost and improves ROI, helping restaurant owners to properly keep in line with their budgets.
  •
This article details the up and coming new trend of restaurants offering customers the ability to be able to pay at their table. The article details the various pros and cons associated with the type of service and how it can benefit the customer as well as the employees of a restaurant establishment. While not perfect, there are many pros associated with a pay-at-the-table service that are hard to ignore, and it is my humble opinion that this kind of service will continue to catch on into the near future. Customers are increasingly looking for new ways to utilize technology to their advantage to be able to get in and out of a restaurant and pay-at-the-table technology definitely allows that. The companies that adopt this kind of technology will increasingly see their profits grow as well as their table turn increase.

What Can We Do About the Growing E-waste Problem? - 3 views

    • tcale003

China recently banned other countries from sending e-waste to them. E-Waste is comprised of many toxic materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium which are very harmful to people and the environment. Many new technologies for biodegradable electronics are being looked at and there is even an EcoAtm in some U.S. states for people to recycle their small electronic devices.
  • When China banned 24 kinds of solid waste last September, countries such as the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan realized they had a big problem. Until last year, China accepted 70 percent of the world’s electronic waste—discarded computers, cell phones, printers, televisions, microwaves, smoke alarms, and other electronic equipment and parts.
  • After China stopped accepting this e-waste out of concern for its environment, Europe and North America began shipping more of it to Southeast Asia—but now Vietnam and Thailand, whose ports have been overwhelmed, are curbing imported e-waste as well.

The Rise of the Wedding Drone - 1 views

  •
"Now a new kind of commercial drone phenomenon has taken off in the United States. People now use small quad copter drones to even shoot photos and videos for their weddings. What seems like a stranger than fiction phenomenon is actually a new craze across the country." The wedding and hospitality industry finds itself forced to conduct business illegally because the FAA is holding onto an outdated rule that essentially states drones cannot be used as part of a commercial enterprise. From Disney's recent application for four drone-related patents, to the ever-widening array of hospitality connected, drone-related applications (parking lot security, large event coverage, wedding photography, etc), the industry finds itself in a quandary. Does it forego use of drones and wait for an FAA ruling (no earlier than September 2015) and risk being left behind by the early adopters, or does it seize upon and expand the use of drone technology while risking the ire of a powerful government agency? In all likelihood, the market will speak with its wallets, forcing regulators to ultimately play catch-up with an industry that is on the verge of a technology driven explosion.
