Digital Collections at Columbia - 1 views

  •
An excellent set of digital source collections run by Columbia Uni. I've been meaning to save all these collections individually but it's such a massive task that I'm just saving the root pages of the collections. If you have a look through these you'll find some gems. And if you save them to the group you will have my undying affection (just please use the same tagging standards - it keeps the information findable).

Secrets of Great History Teachers - 0 views

  •
Interviews with 17 great history teachers. What an excellent idea! The most I have ever learnt about teaching was from watching exceptional teachers, so this should be useful.
  •
In these interviews distinguished teachers share their strategies and techniques. Good teaching is more often honored in rhetoric than reality. And great teachers are generally known locally within their own schools, but less often to a larger group of national colleagues. Our goal in this section is, in part, to identify and honor those people who have taught with excellence, dedication, and distinction.

Historum - History Forums - Powered by vBulletin - 0 views

An excellent find! Contains over 3000 members who discuss different aspects of history. You're going to get a few loonies in a group of people that size but it seems well-organised and efficiently run. Looks like there's a few battles of ideas going on there too, which is cool.

How amazing is this find! Three times the size of Sutton Hoo. And found by an unemployed bloke with a metal detector. Isn't it about time we stopped using the Gibbonesque term 'Dark Ages'? I think there's increasing evidence that the 'Dark' and 'Middle' Ages (it's defined in terms of ancient & modern - how rude!) were not the backstep that most people have assumed. Feel free to disagree! (Sorry for the continuing bonhomie, I'm still on holidays).

You'll find quite a few historical figures on Twitter (Sulla is my favourite - he's a cranky conservative just like Sulla would have been) and this could presage an interesting development in education. Or it could just be a passing fad. By the time that question has been answered, most people will have forgotten it all anyway. A history teacher's lament...

This seems to update with interesting topics that students might find relevant for research or for classroom activities. I use Bloglines to subscribe to the feeds on sites like this (Google Reader is also good) and that way I only have to go to one site to keep up to date.

An excellent collection of some important historical works, downloadable for free. Some people may lament that students won't read them anymore, but hey isn't it better than them just watching MTV? Controversial...

Welcome to The Anti-Saloon League Website... - 0 views

  •
From 1893 to 1933, the Anti-Saloon League was a major force in American politics. Influencing the United States through the printed word and lobbying, it turned a moral crusade into a Constitutional amendment. The League left a legacy of printed material at a site bequeathed to the Westerville Public Library which houses the Anti-Saloon League Museum
  •
A sterling example of the good old-fashioned moral crusade. Of course, we don't have them anymore, do we...?

Has some relevant curriculum materials for Australian history, however I can't help but feel that this kind of thing is like a shining brand-new horse-drawn carriage at the beginning of the twentieth century, unknowing that it has already been superseded...

Course: Mrs. Daniels' Enriched World History - 2 views

  •
A very good example (I think) of how lms's (learning management systems - don't worry, I had to google it) such as Moodle or BlackBoard can be used with your history classes. Essentially every history teacher can take on the role of textbook writer, thus returning the teacher to the position of expert. And that's got to be a good thing! Well done Mrs Daniels. You're a trailblazer.
