The home of record may be the place the person entered military service or that person's residence at that time. The home of record is not always that person's birthplace, home town, or place of high school graduation. If you don't find the name where you expect, please also look under nearby larger cities or see the index pages by last name.  

Wonder if any of those no-doubt steamy phone conversations between Marilyn and JFK made it in there? I'm guessing the 'steamy' section of the JFK recordings might be kinda large...

Between 1940 and 1973, six American presidents from both political parties secretly recorded just under 5,000 hours of their meetings and telephone conversations. Through a combination of historical research and annotated transcripts the Miller Center's Presidential Recordings Program aims to make these remarkable historical sources more accessible to scholars, teachers, students, and the public.

"The LBC/IRN Audio Archive, (London Broadcasting Company / Independent Radio News audio archive) consists of 7,000 reel-to-reel tapes in a collection that runs from 1973 to the mid-1990s. It is the most important commercial radio archive in the UK and provides a unique audio history of the period. This digitised collection focuses on the most noteworthy content - approximately 3,000 hours of recordings relating to news and current affairs. The digitised archive contains invaluable recordings of a wide range of broadcasts including coverage of the Falklands war, the miners' strike, Northern Ireland, the whole of the Thatcher period of government and recordings of the first hour of UK commercial radio including the first commercial radio news bulletin."

You can only listen if you are part of a tertiary institution which has a paid subscription through the Athens ID system (v. annoying!) however you're able to read the transcripts for free.

The Kennan Institute and National Public Radio in the USA has established an online audio archive of Soviet and Russian history. "The archive consists of recordings dating back to the earliest years of the Soviet state. Included are the voices and speeches of key political figures, including Lenin, Kerensky, Kirov, Beria, Stalin, Gorbachev, and others. Among the recorded interviews are Anna Larina (Bukharin's widow); Valentin Berezhkov, Stalin's wartime interpreter; Yelena Bonner, Sakharov's widow; and Lev Pevsner, a survivor of the Leningrad Blockade. There is also on-the-scene recorded sound of many events in Soviet history, including: the Russian and American armies meeting at the Elbe; Stalin's funeral; the August 1991 coup against Gorbachev. [...] The material comes from Soviet and Russian sources, the NPR archives, the archives of the BBC, and individual donors. Some of the material is in Russian, some in English. "

The bulk of the audio files are in Russian, however if you scroll down closely there are speeches by significant Western figures too. Yet another excellent set of resources from the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The Lincoln Archives Digital Project started in 2002 with a simple idea for a vast undertaking: to digitize all federal records that exist from the administration of Abraham Lincoln.  Over 6,000 documents are currently online and over half a million documents are scanned and in the process of being placed online.  People from around the world now have access to the documents of  Abraham Lincoln's administration, including Civil War records. 

In the 1950s and 1960s planners in Harrisonburg, VA implemented a federally sponsored slum clearance and urban renewal program. Seeking to compare this redevelopment effort with the urban renewal efforts in other major cities, students in James Madison University's US Urban Social History Course have begun digitizing relevant primary documents. These files are drawn from Harrisonburg's City Council minutes as well as records located at the Department of Planning and Community Development, the Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and in local planner Robert Sullivan's personal collection. The files are organized by the location where the originals are currently located. Indices and summaries of relevant Daily New Record articles will be added shortly. The Library's collection of more than 500 broadsides is one of the largest recorded and the first to be digitized in its entirety. The examples digitized here span the years 1707 to 1891 and include accounts of executions for such crimes as arson, assault, counterfeiting, horse stealing, murder, rape, robbery, and treason. Many of the broadsides vividly describe the results of sentences handed down at London's central criminal court, the Old Bailey, the proceedings of which are now available online at http://www.oldbaileyonline.org.

Seems to be a basic record search for arrivals at Ellis Island. Might be good for research into demographics, immigration, etc.

When historians look through more evidence they come to understandings that students never get to see becuase their teachers may only rely on the evidence that is part of the liturgy of the US History narrative canon. In this instance, routine court records will tell us much more about puritan Massachusetts than a John Winthrop sermon.
