Wherigo > Tools for creating GPS-enabled adventures - 0 views

  •
Currently avalible for GPS enabled Pocket PC devices and the Garmin Colorado and Oregon models. From Groundspeak, Inc. The makers of Geocaching.com and Waymarking.com
  •
"Wherigo is a platform that allows you to build location based GPS experiences on your computer and play them in the real world. Imagine playing Zork, Secret of Monkey Island or Myst, but in the park around the corner, or on the beach during your family vacation. Rather than clicking the mouse and selecting a location to move your character, you physically move from one location to the next to advance the story. Rather than searching for puzzle clues on a screen, you look for them in the real world. Using Wherigo, you can create interactive tours, adventure games and puzzles... the possibilities are endless."

The final videos can all be found here.  I hesitate to embed any in the post because I know I would be prone to pick the "best" one.  Please click on the link and randomly select one to watch! There are two pages of videos-and hey-leave a comment or a thumbs up!  I have to say, that after watching the kids make these, the final products just don't reflect the amount of work that is needed.  What I mean is that you shouldn't watch them and say "My kids could do that in a couple of days."  It took 360 minutes of class time to produce those 1-2 minute videos!! One thing I wished we had done is to write transitions so that the different videos linked together better.  I inadvertently led them to make videos on topics that come across as standing alone in time instead of being influenced and apart of other events and movements. I was able to pop in briefly and watch them being created (on Ustream)- such an amazing process! They are so deceptively simple and enchanting, yet require a myriad of skills. Well done! • Students should have an opportunity to write for a real audience and collaborate on writing projects, experts say—and the internet can help
  • The report found that the use of Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, and comics-creating software can heighten students’ engagement and enhance their writing and thinking skills in all grade levels and across all subjects.
  • First, every student needs one-on-one access to computers or mobile technology in classrooms.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Second, every teacher needs professional development in the effective use of digital tools for teaching and learning, including the use of digital tools to promote writing. Teachers need an opportunity to use technology themselves so they can share what they learn with the students
  • Finally, all schools and districts need a comprehensive technology policy to ensure that the necessary infrastructure, technical support, and resources are available for teaching and learning.

This looks very cool. Quite big (2G) but maybe you can talk to the ICT department... I saw a similar thing for Ancient Rome on Google Earth but you need a powerful computer to run it and my laptop wasn't up to the job. Gen-Y is so visual, things like this can be great tools.

Looks like it might be useful in a computer room, having the students work through the site for all or part of a lesson. It takes them through the research process as they try to reconstruct the historical circumstances of Martha Ballard through primary documents. Quite cool.
