Digital Past is a digitization initiative undertaken by libraries, historical societies, museums, and other cultural venues throughout Illinois in partnership with the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) in Wheeling, Illinois. It began in 1998 with a grant from the Illinois State Library and has become a popular resource for researchers of all ages and interests including schoolchildren, genealogists, historians, authors, producers, and special interest groups. Digital Past contains collections from over 40 institutions of varying topics and formats including over 136,000+ records.

Couldn't agree more. They reckon their collection will grow to over 10 million texts. An electronic Alexandria. It's the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff that makes Diigo such a powerful tool. Especially now it looks so sexy!

The Digital Library of Appalachia provides online access to archival and historical materials related to the culture of the southern and central Appalachian region. The contents of the DLA are drawn from special collections of Appalachian College Association member libraries.

How awesome! You can use Adobe Shockwave (it's free) to view these medieval and early modern texts from the British Library. Makes you wonder if one day we'll be able to see this stuff in 3D while sitting at home.

The Post-Reformation Digital Library is a collection of resources put together by a group of researchers and relating to the development of theology during the Post-Reformation/early modern era (ca. 16th-18th c.), hosted by the Hekman Library in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA) at the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies of Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary.

Most of it seems to be in Latin. Probably should have realised that before I starting adding it as a bookmark. Oh well. Too late now.

'Underwritten by a "We the People" grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Digital Library on American Slavery is a cooperative venture between the Race and Slavery Petitions Project and the Electronic Resources and Information Technology Department of University Libraries at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Digital Library offers a searchable database of detailed personal information about slaves, slaveholders, and free people of color. Designed as a tool for scholars, historians, teachers, students, genealogists, and interested citizens, the site provides access to information gathered and analyzed over an eighteen-year period from petitions to southern legislatures and country courts filed between 1775 and 1867 in the fifteen slaveholding states in the United States and the District of Columbia.'

'Google has a big economic incentive to ensure that its online library is widely available: it makes most of its money from search advertising, so the more people that use its services, including the online book archive, the better. It also has a legal incentive to watch its step. The agreement stipulates that institutional subscription prices must be low enough to ensure that the public has "broad access" to digital books, while at the same time earning market rates for copyright owners. Another one of the precious collections provided by that most excellent of libraries, Harvard University Library. It's so great that they don't just lock it up and be snobs. Good on them.

BookServer with more than 1,5 millions books is, today, one of the biggest digital libraries offering and sharing free access to digital books both in PDF and ePub format, the latest recommended by the International Digital Publishing Forum a free and open e-book standard with extension ".epub".

Huge digital collection of historic newspapers by the Library of Congress!

Not easily browseable however you can search the collection, so I guess if you know what you're looking for it could be useful.

The LA84 Foundation has undertaken an ambitious project to convert portions of its traditional library collection to digital format. The growing digital collection now contains more than 300,000 pages, stored in over 75,000 PDF files.

Great place to start your search for digitized collections/archives. These collections are housed at historical and academic institutions of all kinds, and contain primary sources that can include original historical documents, images, audio, artifacts, etc.

The Library's collection of more than 500 broadsides is one of the largest recorded and the first to be digitized in its entirety. The examples digitized here span the years 1707 to 1891 and include accounts of executions for such crimes as arson, assault, counterfeiting, horse stealing, murder, rape, robbery, and treason. Many of the broadsides vividly describe the results of sentences handed down at London's central criminal court, the Old Bailey, the proceedings of which are now available online at http://www.oldbaileyonline.org.

"The Center for Research Libraries, the University of Chicago Library, and the ARTFL Project, (American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language) have cooperated on a project to digitize pamphlets and periodicals from the French Revolution of 1848 held by CRL as a test of electronic distribution of archive material via internet.

Digitised pamphlets from the period of the French Revolution. From what I can tell they're all in French. C'est la vie (I probably misspelt that).

The Digital Military Newspaper Library is a pilot project to house, organize and preserve contemporary and historic military newspapers and periodicals. These newspapers represent Naval and Air Force bases from many geographical regions around the state of Florida and will include Kennedy Space Center, a submarine base at King's Bay Georgia, the Panama Canal Zone, and two newspapers in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
