Not sure I posted this already. This "filter bubble" as he calls it should be a concern re: Ubiquitous Learning

one of the famous TED talk. personalization of information and its potential pitfall. what is necessary for 'functioning democracy'. makes me wonder what are the risks associated with too much personalization in education too.

Thanks for sharing Drew, this is an excellent talk showing the tension between our need to balance what we want/need and reliance on a technology to help filter the results. While we need to get out of that 'filter bubble', we also need it to be close by so we don't get overwhelmed.

Very similar to the idea of teaching computer programming via storytelling/animation (Scratch)

I just watched this video and it's actually billed INCORRECTLY on that Ted.com description! The guy is *not* saying to teach math through teaching computer programming at'all!! He is simply advocating to use the power of the computer to teach math - i.e. using programs such as Mathematica. His slide says "Computer-based math: critical reform" -- so, he is saying that students should use the computer for the computing (which is for sure true) and teachers should teach with the students using this computing power asap (which I agree with) ... but he is *not* actually saying to teach computer programming ... p.s. This video is sweeping through the math teacher twitter streams and blogs right now (yes, there is such a community out there!) But, in my opinion, his idea is no big leap ...

Absolutely agree... the idea presented here is no big leap at all, especially to us who are following these advances pretty closely. I saw the parallels with scratch in terms of engaging the learner.

Ted talks are interesting and useful at times in the classroom but will students automatically make connections to class content?  This annotating tool enables either instructors or students to make explicit connections or commentary and share the end product.  

I loved this Ted Talk and the implications it has for learning languages.

As we're researching on emerging technology, much of the literature we read is based on credible sources, or so we hope. This talk highlights the danger of publication bias and the importance of knowing where research has shown that things work, and where they don't. By focusing too much on the stuff that works, sometimes, we inadvertently ignore the research that shows it doesn't.

Thanks for sharing Brandon. I like two things she said in particular 1) General wisdom often carries no weight 2) Like red wine, video games may be good when used appropriately. I'm convinced myself in the power of game-based learning but do agree that more work needs to be done in bringing good ones to the class.

Great talk about an innovation that allows anyone to access a vast array of museum exhibits on the web. Great look into informal learning using the web.

Wow, TED Ed looks pretty cool. The videos are high quality and the explanation for the ones I watched were clear and concise. Nice!

A great example of integrating tech into a lesson plan, breaking down steps to create your own TED talk with social bookmarks and dogpile!

Pretty interesting insights. I think the vision matches what most people think of, though I'm not convinced by her talk that it's fundamentally different from the Open Universities or U of Phoenix (except that it's free and put on by top "brick-and-mortar" universities).
