Portal is a fun, innovative 3D first-person game known for its unique physics gameplay and sense of humor. It's over 4 years old now, but still enjoyable and clever. Pretty relevant to what we've discussed in class so far--Verizon is launching a couple of initiatives to encourage mobile ed tech development. One is to encourage students to create educational apps relevant to their communities, while the other is to train teachers on how to use technology and mobile tech in their classrooms. Third part is an online portal for sharing knowledge and materials between teachers.

I think one really interesting part is that NYU agreed that students who finished their first year could apply to NYU Abu Dhabi and finish their free education if accepted! So it's like a portal or proving ground...but for a traditional university.

I'm more interested in the implication of touch screens that are flexible and thus potentially made more ubiquitous than we can currently imagine. Fabulous and possibly life-saving application of augmented reality

There was a great forum on the future of technology in the classroom at the MIT Media Lab today. For those who couldn't make it, the video should be posted on this site soon and will also air on NBC on Sunday, September 23. I found it to be a nice blend of policy and practice-focused discussion, and despite weak moderation, I think it's worth the time to watch!

Content providers like Behrman House are looking to take learning beyond the classroom in race to the digital top. Imagine your child's Hebrew school homework isn't on some worksheet crumpled at the bottom of her backpack, forgotten until time to leave the house on Sunday morning.

As I chew through the Visions 2020 readings, I can't help my skepticism...and not due to the seamless integration of emerging ed technology. Alas, PEOPLE and the existing power structure of schools (reform) are not guided by a mission to reinvent, but to move the goal posts on ed standards around so as to insulate and protect the paradigm. Interesting to see what kind of role educational technology will play in this conversation.

Sheesh!

While not an emerging tehnology per se, social networks can serve as indicators of how, why and who is using and CREATING web content. I think the creation part of this exchange is key in that it ishere that the disruptive element of the technology comes into play. In my studies of Podcasts for the wiki assignment I found that many first time podcasters subscribers experimented with recording their own Podcast before becoming regular consumers. How does this relate to the facebook vs. myspace arguement, you ask? SImple, myspace is a more customizable portal/page that allows users to express and communicate their own, often marginalized socio-cultural identity. Facebook on the other hand asks users to define their online persona via 'freinds', shared photos, profile text fields, etc. For many recent immigrant and children, the formation and identification of an imagined community is an attractive thing. Somalian wallpaper, Manga flash videos embedded, Dominican Republic Flag .gifs waving all over..and MUSIC.
