Lives at war - 1 views

Hard to resist such a title ! Lives at war is a online virtual reality game designed to teach world war 2 history to British pupils. The use of archival videos in the game within the context of objects is a creative blend of videos and VW for education. Another interesting example of a VW that exemplifies situated learning.

computer based tools for modeling systems - 3 views

  •
Conceptual change is aided by model building. Visualizing the relationships between different components of the model using a graphical interface is a powerful technological capability. Powersim is one such tool. Such an iterative model building activity to predict theoretically principled outcomes is stated to be conceptually engaging. There are other tools like Stella and VSim that fall into the same category.

A researcher whose work ties into our class discussion - 0 views

  •
Yesterday afternoon, some of us were at a talk by Prof. Alex Pentland I found several of the topics tie back to our class discussion. In particular, his thoughts that only the individual should have ownership over personal data and others may seek permission to access it was, I felt appropriate. Of course for young students it appears more complicated. I am considering reading his papers ( at least the non technical parts :) His ideas can impact learning in the class room too ! Please share your thoughts !

There is some mention of what it can and cannot do on the technology front. The learning programs embedded are not elaborated.

Considering the complexity of modern day research, finding opportunities for students to make real contributions to science is a challenge. I am yet to play with this tool. Would high school students be able to use it ? ( I hope , my fellow graduate students who spend 5 years of their life chasing that one elusive protein structure are aware of this tool : )
