SIIA Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) Progress & Impact - 0 views

  •
Here is the link to the archived version of the SIIA webinar I posted about a few days ago: "The Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) is working to create a standard metadata framework for tagging educational resources on the web to enhance search, discovery and delivery of educational content. The project is funded by the Gates and Hewlett Foundations, administered through AEP and Creative Commons, and builds on the broader Schema.org project by leading search engines Bing, Google, and Yahoo! This webinar provides an overview of the LRMI goals and deliverables, an update on progress and timelines, a look at the technical specifications, and a discussion of its implementation and impact with a focus on content publishers, aggregators and other digital learning providers."

Here are just a few topics that we will cover… 1. Brain-machine interfaces to control computers, exoskeletons, robots, and other devices with thought alone; 2. Mind-reading devices that will project the conscious contents of one's brain onto a screen as if it was a movie; 3. Devices to enhance intellectual ability and to increase concentration; 4. Devices to enhance creativity and insight; 5. Mechanisms to upload the mind to a machine, thus preserving it from bodily decay and bodily death.

Creativity or Conformity Conference 2007 - 0 views

  • Our teaching and learning habits are useful but they can also be deadly. They are useful when the conditions in which they work are predictable and stable. They are deadly if and when the bottom falls out of the stable social world in and for which we learn. According to Zigmunt Bauman (2004), this is not merely a future possibility – it is the contemporary social reality.

RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms - 0 views

  •
An animated presentation of Sir Ken Robinson's views on education, esp. its effects on creativity and innovation. It's 11+ minutes, but I found it went quickly.
  •
Rsa Animate is becoming one of my favorite distractions. It is interesting to compare Kahn with RSA. both using similar media for presentation of ideas. Production quality and content very different. Is this reflective of the difference in goals?

This camera can capture things at the speed of light... - 0 views

  •
It isn't so much the fact that this camera can do what it can. It's how its inventor conceptualized the possibilities of firing packets of photons many times and capturing it to form an image. There were ripples of light! Amazing possibilities in store for the imaginative educator...

Wow, thanks for this link, Uche. I think that's a really interesting business they have going...kind of a way to spread best practices that in private industry might be spread via other means. It seems to address the PD / collaboration issue mentioned in NETP, too.

wow, great idea....I really like this model! This is can be great incentive for teachers to put their best work out there... and they finally recognized for their creativeness!

What to test instead - Ideas - The Boston Globe - 2 views

  • A new wave of test designers believe they can measure creativity, problem solving, and collaboration – and that a smarter exam could change education.
  • Reengineering tests has become a kind of calling for a group of educators and researchers around the country. With millions of dollars of funding from the federal government, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as from firms like Cisco Systems, Intel, and Microsoft, they have set about rethinking what a test can do, what it can look like, and what qualities it can assess.
  • computer simulations, games, and stealth monitoring

  • There are just a lot fewer jobs where you’re not doing information-seeking, interpreting, problem-solving, and communication than in the past.”

  • equire people to exercise a bundle of complex skills at the same time,
  • rafting computer programs that take advantage of so-called stealth assessment, a method of judging test-takers without telling them exactly what’s being judged.
  • When we test, we’re really probing for certain qualities—the particular mix of knowledge and ability—that tell us a student is ready to move ahead, or an employee will be an asset to the firm.

  • Harvard developmental psychologist Howard Gardner participated in an effort to design new kinds of tests in the humanities that could be graded objectively.
  • Ultimately, he found that the nuance required to measure softer skills collided with the demands of standardization.

What Would You Pay for a Great Educational App? | MindShift - 1 views

  •
full disclosure: classmate Alex Schoenfeld first shared this with the us in the TIE facebook group :). But it brings an interesting trend in the adoption and pricing of mobile apps: Article outlining what lots of us know when it comes to moblie apps and pricing - free, $1, and $2 are the price-points that sell, and allow us to try out an app with minimal regret. But with the rise of more and more high-quailty, high-profile, and high-budget educatioanl apps, will the pricing structure change? Will parents and educators be willing to spend the prices of traditional computer software ($50 or more?) for really great mobile apps? The article brings up an interesting model that seems to already be coming to life looking at how apps are being sold and updated lately: "Donahoo and Russell propose there's a better way: subscriptions and content expansion packs.  Launchpad Toys follows the latter tact. The initial price the Toontastic app for $3 (though it's currently free). Users can use that fully functioning app, or choose to add additional characters and themes with $.99 expansion packs. This way, they contend, costs are controlled; it's cheap for parents and children to evaluate an app, and the model encourages regular updates."

Lives at war - 1 views

Hard to resist such a title ! Lives at war is a online virtual reality game designed to teach world war 2 history to British pupils. The use of archival videos in the game within the context of objects is a creative blend of videos and VW for education. Another interesting example of a VW that exemplifies situated learning.

Forget an essay -- earn a scholarship with a tweet - CNN.com - 7 views

    NOW!!! THIS IS REALLY COOL!
  •
I wish it was this easy when I applied to undergrad.
  •
interesting point that the MBA admissions director from University of Iowa mentions. Admissions dept.'s are finding traditional application essays stale. New/social media outlets like twitter are bringing back originality and creativity. Maybe embracing Tweets as a medium is like a page-limit on a paper assignment. The constraints force students to really hone in on their points, and convey it as succinctly and clearly as possible? Conveying an entire thought/argument in 140 characters... it isn't easy, and perhaps those who can do it best are really effective 21st century communicators, and are worth rewarding/supporting.

I am getting a bit tired of the 'either/or' scenarios painted by some. Thankfully, some teachers like Ms.Tavenner seem to realize that they can use technology in a useful way to teach effectively. "Ms. Tavenner says she believes that computers cannot replace teachers. But the computer, she recognizes, can do some things a teacher cannot. It can offer personal feedback to a whole room of students as they work. And it can give the teacher additional class time to do more creative and customized teaching."

Online physics game. It's really fun and creative. One must wonder, however, how to really pin down what knowledge/skills they're acquiring and if they're transferrable. Wonderful game nevertheless!
