The Khan Academy Brings Disrupting Class to Life - 0 views

  • Lastly, toward the end of the video Khan talks about his surprise that it's not just him and other math geeks who want to learn and understand these concepts -- and get pleasure from it. He reads a letter about someone who solves a derivative and smiles. This resonates and matches our new chapter in the new edition of Disrupting Class -- that a fundamental job people have to do is to feel successful and achieve.

Check out the video at http://vimeo.com/11731351 (It's the same info Cameron posted a while ago but this time it's made the widely read Huffington Post ... and I think it's a good repeat post since I, for one, didn't pay enough attention to this the first time I heard about it.)

Kno Tablet to Debut at $599 - NYTimes.com - 2 views

  • We already knew that the Kno, a tablet computer designed for college students, would be bigger and heavier than Apple’s iPad. It will also be pricier.
  • “When you do the math, it actually pays for itself and still saves $1,300 in digital textbook costs,” he said.
  • To be sure, the Kno is not just a fancy e-reader. It is also a platform that will allow students to take notes, manage projects and organize their college lives.

Shortage of credentialed online teachers prompts discussions on training - The Denver Post - 0 views

Is a good teacher a good teacher regardless of the medium, or do online teachers need medium-specific training? The "class pet" idea is great.

This article is really informative. I guess I knew much of the article intuitively but I didn't have hard facts. My biggest question is his depiction of middle class Americans as viewing education as an expense as opposed to an investment. Our non- Univ of Pheonix college students mostly hail from middle class families who are worried if their child doesn't have a degree. His evidence for his viewpoint is that 50% of peope don't have a degree. However, what percent went to college and dropped out? I remember that in 1990's that 25% of Americans had college degrees. Sounds like there is some growth. Regardless, his views on the Asia market and servicing struggling districts is food for thought. Thank you.

Dive In Digital - 1 views

I made this wiki for a class I took last semester on Authorship and Learning in the Digital Age. It was designed as a resource for teachers who are interested in using the internet in the classroom, but want to make sure they are preparing their students for safe internet use. It deals with COPPA, privacy and safety concerns, and touches on media literacy and informs teachers what researchers have found about young kids' processing of online content. I'd love to hear your feedback on the site, and if you find it useful, please forward the link along!

The Simpsons: Bart Gets a "Z" - full episode - 0 views

  •
This recent episode of "The Simpsons" addresses, incidentally (and in a way characteristic of the show), some of the issues we discussed in class. Nothing terribly profound, but I thought it had an amusing satire of modern teacher education programs.

  • The "tweets" of Emmett Rensin and Alexander Aciman combine the knowledge of an English major with the snarky shorthand of a teenager's text message.
  • "It's funny if you've read the books," said Rensin, who has read them at his tender age of 19.
  • "I'm not going to say it's high art," said Aciman, whose favorite author is Marcel Proust. "There is some value to it, I feel, aside from the fact we're making available the idea behind great works of art."
