New forecast about how many preK-12 students will do online learning

Relating to in-class discussion last week about colleges outsourcing e-mail to Google....

this article discusses how segregation is taking place in social networking (facebook is upscale compared to myspace)

There are many courses to choose from in various subject matters. Creating Interactive Multimedia & Web 2.0 in the Education section looked especially interesting to me.

This video reports on one professor's use of Twitter in the classroom as a means for students to ask questions. Some students abuse the system, while the TAs are charged with answering the questions during class.

See a need, build something to meet the need, and go from there... StudyBoost is the result of a brother watching his brother and friend try to study for the GMAT without carrying around the book. Born: an IM client that allows for collaboration on questions and answers applicable to the test by both students and teachers - wherever and whenever. For Wiske's class - wouldn't this fit nicely into the CoI and PI models? If so, why wouldn't school embrace this use instead of worrying about inappropriate use of phones in class? Make the lesson or assignment engaging enough - generative enough - to hook and sustain appropriate interaction on the device that 93% of children have ACCESS to? Sounds like a win-win?

For those of you in Professor Wiske's class, this makes our course work all the more relevant. For the purposes of this class, what technologies are effective in providing the tools for teachers and students to engage in quality online education? Certainly a question that, based on these numbers, is only going to grow more complex with time...

Relating to the discussion last class about potential directions AR and mobile apps may go -- this iPhone app allows users to experience a location (in this case, Rome) as it existed in the past.  Provides images and historical info for all users, but if the user is actually at the Coliseum, it uses the iPhone camera + gps and presents actual 3D renditions of the past of whatever is in the user's viewfinder

Is the online experience important enough to warrant this?

This strikes me as a case where technology is being implemented without enough thought as to how the technology actually furthers the learning goals. "Having an online learning experience" doesn't seem to me like a good enough reason to require students to take a course online, especially for students who do not have easy access to the internet. While I think it's important for students to get experience with an online learning platform, I hope that they are learning more than just how to use the technology -- what is more important is that they learn how to be part of a collaborative Community of Inquiry (I am borrowing the phrase Community of Inquiry from Garrison's "E-learning in the 21st Century"). This requires them to think and write critically and collaborate effectively with their peers.

""As much as we are here to serve the teachers, it is the students who ultimately benefit from the integration of technology in the classrooms," she said. "Students who once felt that they had to 'power down' to go to class, are now experiencing 21st century skills and styles of learning - because their teachers are better able to utilize the tools of the digital age.""

In US alone, 4 million K-12 students are enrolled online. Annual conference on online (and blended) learning in Indianapolis on November 9-11, by the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL). Online learning is seen as the solution to allowing greater access to diverse resources curriculum, especially when many schools face serious financial crisis. Expect to hear from experts and educators, such as, such as Gene Wilhoit, Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers; Paul Peterson of Harvard University; Michael Horn, author of Disrupting Class; Steve Midgley of the U.S. Department of Education; and iNACOL president Susan Patrick. A hands-on report with the $35 tablet (Aakash). Interested that they call it a "leap frog" technology, in that it's a modern technology brought into a society that didn't have related legacy technologies to begin with. Relates to our class discussion of 'disruptive technologies'- if a group is starting with nothing at all, the bar can initially be set very low and it's still better than nothing. Great article about students using backchannels in schools. It discusses successes such as shy students speaking up more and students viewing their peers as more intelligent.

I agree that it allows shy students an opportunity to participate in way that gives them time to think through a response or in a less intense way

This is what some very talented current students at HGSE are working on. It's a solid plan, with a talented and diverse team of educators and media producers. And it's taking off! So heads up everyone. This is part of the next phase of your plan too ;-) Just look at the production value!

Arizona State University is using data mining to collect information on their students and help guide them to the "most appropriate major". also, in class, using data collection methods, teachers collect information to be used in assessment Ex: "Ms. Galayda can monitor their progress. In her cubicle on a recent Monday, she sees the intimacies of students' study routines - or lack of them - from the last activity they worked on to how many tries they made at each end-of-lesson quiz. For one crammer, the system registers 57 attempts on multiple quizzes in seven days. Pulling back to the big picture, a chart shows 15 students falling behind (in red) and 17 on schedule (in green)."

wow this is kind of bothersome on some levels and kinda amazing on other levels. While I can see the benefit of understanding where and how a student is more likely to succeed, I think there are some potential dangers with such a system. There is the what I would imagine the psychological effect of such a program and I am thinking particularly about STEM fields where women are already way under-represented and often self conscious about their performance, do you really also need a system telling you you shouldn't be majoring in that as well cause you're not performing at that point....or what about a student who really wants to be an engineer but maybe hasn't been fully prepared with the appropriate math courses in high school, would he or she be filtered into another major? I understand using such a system as a means to target help for example if a student could get an assessment of where they currently are, where they want to go and how to get there....

UC Irvine's TLTC frontpage linked to this archived Google presentation on how teachers can use Google apps in Higher Education. Almost felt sales-pitchy and I wondered how much time and energy faculty are willing to invest in configuring and setting that stuff up for their own class, as opposed to using whatever the university's IT team has set up and standardized around.

This article is relevant to the CAST project I'm working on for this class as well as a general evaluation of this emerging market. Is the big money in the analytics of user behavior? Hmmm...
