      In America, we have tried to fix this by offering computer access in the schools. We don't have digital cafes offering computer access in many locations- typically it's just WiFi connections. Unfortunately, this means disadvantaged students are forced to complete any computer-based assignments before, during, and after school, while the building is still open.
  • Now, in the age of Internet 2.0, the web is of no use if only some people have access to it. Perhaps the digital society can help with this - I believe that promoting tele-education in our cities will help these people to get good education.

    Hi T561- a bit old, but an international perspective on the inequality of technology access across the globe. This article links in with the TIE list discussions about the One Laptop Per Child effort as well. If we want to use technology to break down international barriers, like Dede's "Microsoft of the future" film, we have to address the issue of accessibility, both across the globe and within our own student population.

      I seriously doubt colleges and universities are going to fall by the wayside into cyberspace. The article is focusing on the cost of education at these institutions instead of the quality of education. Yes, more students will have access to higher ed. degrees because they are more affordable, but setting out on your own at eighteen years of age, whether it be going to college or entering the workforce, is a long-held tradition in society. Students at universities aren't just learning about academics, they're learning about social dynamics as well. Based on my personal experience, I probably learned more about why and how people, groups, teams, and large organizations operate and interact (especially in informal settings) than I did about Milton's 15th century Morte D'Arthur. If the author is proposing that MOST high school graduates stay home for an additional two to four years before entering the real world, I think it would create a whole new set of rammifications that would negatively impact our society as a whole.

    This article talks about online-learning and the ways it may change the college experience. While I agree that new technology is affecting the way our courses are run, I don't see it leading to the complete shut down of Universities. While it is wonderful that people have access to courses and resources that they may not otherwise have, I believe that there will always be a need for face-to-face interactions that one can only get from a University setting.

    What age group would benefit most from this? What could the teacher do to make sure students learn about physics and not just learn how to manipulate the simulation?

    I just played around with it a little bit, and I don't feel that I could use it effectively with grade 9th or grade 7th students that I was teaching last year. It is pretty much just a balancing game, but I don't think it can help learners understand any particular concepts like 'gravity' or the 'principle of moments'. For younger learners, like 6-year olds perhaps, it could help them develop an understanding of weights and balancing forces(?)... I don't know...

The contest geared toward middle school age validates my conviction that middle schoolers can and should be learning technology ... yes, even in BPS there's got to be a way.

    TESLA is studying both how we can make math education more effective and what types of motivational inductions appeal to various types of students in grades 5-9. The emphasis in engagement is on building intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy in math, rather than using external motivation to "sugar-coat" math as yucky, but necessary. The intrinsic/extrinsic distinction is often ignored by game designers,and as a result kids who are momentarily engaged in STEM can actually be demotivated longer term. TESLA is trying to established a more nuanced view of how to build this type of game.

Especially fascinating is the discussion (2/3 of the way down) of languages that use a geographical, rather than egotistical, method for describing direction and relative position. (For example, the cup is resting on the north side of the west table in the southern room of the house.) How would a person with this type of view of the world experience a virtual environment? Also interesting implications for kids growing up with social media. Do new technologies impart habits of mind that affect the way kids learn?

    This is a really interesting and cool idea. I know that Disney's intense storyboarding model in its 'golden age' relied on months and sometimes years of collaborative, co-creation of a story between 10s-100s of people. And their decline in quality is often attributed to adopting a one-author/screenwriter process (The book: The Illusion of Life, Disney Animation; by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston talks about the company's process with lots of beautiful illustrations, how-to advice, and historical narratives..). What will happen when the general public, with potentially 1000s to millions of viewers put their minds together to evolve the best story?

It was designed as a resource for teachers who are interested in using the internet in the classroom, but want to make sure they are preparing their students for safe internet use. It deals with COPPA, privacy and safety concerns, and touches on media literacy and informs teachers what researchers have found about young kids' processing of online content.     Thanks for this, Anna. I saw this group as part of an interview on ABC about iPads. Their data really gets me thinking about the educational and home space and how we need to design content to leverage the technology that is most accessible to them - and the iPad isn't the "golden ticket" (at least in this age span).

    CommonSense is a strong organization - they have a comprehensive database of reviews of content, so if you are a parent looking for the low down on a media product (whether it be a TV show, video game, movie, etc.), commonsense is a good place to get an overview of the product. I have heard arguments, however, that their tendency is to be more conservative in their reviews. May not work for every parent, but definitely a good resource!
