Study done by Writing in Digital Environments (WIDE) Research Center, Michigan State University, published September 7 2010. The study looks at the writing lives of over 1300 first year students, enrolled in a variety of secondary settings (and geographic locations), from large 4-year universities, to a community college. Executive summary, information about the survey, and a downloadable PDF.

Dr. Vincent Tinto is a professor in the School of Education at Syracuse University. His most recent book, Leaving College (also tagged), "lays out a theory and policy perspective on student success that is considered the benchmark by which work on these issues are judged."

Tinto is quoted by RO, in terms of show students how important community and connection are to being successful in college.

Article announces the findings of a just-published early report, "Turning the Tide: Five Years of Achieving the Dream in Community Colleges," looking at five years of progress of the Achieving the Dream program in the 26 schools that joined in 2004. While the article cites that the changes are slow and small, there are bright spots, including the spread of a "culture of evidence" with more sophisticated data collection and analysis.
