A collection of related studies looking at college completion and student success from the ECS Research Studies Database. Studies are from a variety of sources -- not the ECS (e.g. Journal of Higher Education, National Bureau of Economic Research, and American Educational Research Journal).

The Community College Research Center (CCRC) is part of the Insitute on Education and the Economy, Teacher's College, Columbia University. From their site: "CCRC"s mission is to conduct research on major issues affecting community colleges in the United States and to contribute to the development of practice and policy that expands access to higher education and promotes success for all students."

The idea behind the Edupunk concept is a DIY approach to education in order to make education truly student-driven, and to make good use of the great variety of resources available on the Internet. To that end, Kamenetz, author of The Edupunk's Guide (a free ebook) offers these ideas regarding online research.

Much as the Edupunk movement fails to value the importance of a good teacher to guide and support the student's learning experience, this post fails to take librarians and libraries into account. That said, there are some great sites and sources on this list, though no mention of how students should evaluate the accuracy, currency, or authority of these sites. What do you think?

"ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults." The site includes the proceedings from each annual meeting, as well as a newsletter for download.

With this method, math students work with their instructors to analyze their errors, reworking problems to be sure that they understand how to solve them next time. Current research being conducted at the Memory Lab includes studies that pertain to education, including how frequent quizzes might improve students' retention of new materials.

Viadero describes the poster sessions at the annual federal Institute of Education Sciences, including a poster looking at the effectiveness of frequent quizzes for improving retention among 8th grade science students. Study done by Writing in Digital Environments (WIDE) Research Center, Michigan State University, published September 7 2010. The study looks at the writing lives of over 1300 first year students, enrolled in a variety of secondary settings (and geographic locations), from large 4-year universities, to a community college. Executive summary, information about the survey, and a downloadable PDF.

Announcement of a Summary Report produced by Community College Research Center (CCRC) by Davis Jenkins, Shanna Smith Jaggars & Josipa Roksa, November 2009. The analysis looked at the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), studying a dataset of 24,140 first-time college students who enrolled in at least one VCCS course in summer or fall 2004. A PDF of the summary is available from this page, as is a link to the full-length technical version.

Students will pay not for a printed edition at a bookstore, but for permanent access on the Internet ($49).

February 2012. Link to full report at the bottom of the summary on this page. The colleges in this study are two of six in the NCPR Learning Communities Demonstration, in which random assignment evaluations are being used to determine the impacts of learning communities on student success. NCPR has presented finding from all six colleges. They show that when one-semester learning communities have impacts, they tend to be concentrated in the semester in which students are enrolled in the program. Another report, a final one will be released in 2012. That report synthesizes the findings across all colleges studied and includes an additional semester of student follow-up at each college.
