The Education Commission of the States and the Tennessee Board of Regents held a meeting to examine the work undertaken by the Tennessee Developmental Studies Redesign initiative. Individuals from the pilot sites and task force members presented their project work and results at the October 7, 2010 workshop held in Nashville, TN.

As part of the Tennessee Developmental Studies Redesign initiative, the Math Curriculum Redesign Task Force was charged with developing an appropriate mathematic curriculum that would prepared students for success into entry level college mathematics courses. Included are recommendations drawn from the work of the 11 community college campuses that participated in SPECC-a three year, multi-site, action research project of the Carnegie Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The study follows a cohort model and tracks the course-taking patterns of first-time community college students over a seven-year period. The data suggest that aspirations, age, ethnicity, and institutional factors affect students' completion of a developmental course sequence. After presenting the descriptive data, the authors outline five policy implications for their research. Three are particularly relevant to policy discussions we have had at Getting Past Go: using common assessments and early interventions to reduce the need for developmental education; identifying delays in course-taking to develop better-aligned support; and, addressing the issue of students not completing remediation from the lowest course levels.

Article in Community College Journal on impact of unions on community college academic governance

Explores barriers adult basic education students face in obtaining postsecondary credentials. The authors offer suggestions to policymakers that can be used to improve the outcomes for ABE students based on lessons learned from three state-level policy initiatives: Bridges to Opportunity, Breaking Through and Shifting Gears.
