The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and Weber State University (Ogden, UT) have developed an Online teaching methods course that reflects state-of-the-art research and practice in foreign language education. This course is offered through WSU Online. "Encouraging Creativity in Online Courses." Though a bit older, I think this article makes some interesting points made in terms of the approach to course development. "Looking at the other side - rather than looking at boundaries, look for the solution outside the assumptions."

Thanks, Dan. This is an excellent overview that offers reasonable guidelines while highlighting the gray areas within the area of fair use, a very flexible term. The focus is on intent but, more importantly, that the educational/critical aspect must be clearly defined and communicated. I do use quite a lot of video so this is very helpful to me.

More help on creating your syllabus. I found the sections on "Managing Your Student's Expectations" and creating the geographical "Map" for your course (showing students where everything is on the Bb site for example) were very helpful and provided some interesting information. It's not just about the nuts and bolts of putting a syllabus together but how doing it well can save you time and headaches later!

In brief, the study shows that yes online teaching is time consuming but NOT because of the technology involved but because it is a great time investment to interact with all students. Again brings me back to my point that YES online teaching helps to 'individualize/personalize' the student learning process. Therefore, requires greater inputs and personalize mentoring than a traditional classroom engagement.

I thought some of you might find this document helpful for thinking through your approach to plagiarism. The Council of Writing Program Administrators is a national organization comprised of college and university faculty who run or have professional interest in researching and running writing programs. This document is a statement of best practices for educating students about plagiarism and for building educational environments in which academic honesty flourishes.

David, This is very useful for those of us teaching writing intensive courses - thank you.

I like that this encourages working with students (even PLAGIARISTS) in order to help them get past bad or misguided habits and develop better, more ethical writing practices. Even in the short time I've been teaching, it seems like students are becoming both (a) less attentive to issues of casual plagiarism and (b) less responsive to punitive approaches. I think these guideline could be helpful, for both online and traditional courses, in helping students to think about the kinds of writers they want to be. (...or the kinds of writers *I* want them to be)

Here is an recent interesting resource for anyone including music history or historical facts about music or musicians in their class lectures or research: James Briscoe, Vitalizing Music History Teaching (HIllsdale, NY: Pendragon Press, 2010). This is a series of collected essays about specific issues in teaching music history in the 21st century. Although certainly not focused solely on teaching online, it certainly presents a variety of principles, problems, and proposals that current teachers are facing in the music history classroom and I found it very helpful.

Similar to the triad of education model...this model explains how a "student" teacher transitions to become an experienced teacher with the assistance of a 'co-operative' teacher and 'university' supervisor. The article also explains the areas which need further research to strengthen the model and its application in practice.
