Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video - 4 views

  •
A discussion of fair use practices for online video. This should be helpful for anybody who is planning on using video clips as illustrations or for discussions or assignments.
  •
Thanks, Dan. This is an excellent overview that offers reasonable guidelines while highlighting the gray areas within the area of fair use, a very flexible term. The focus is on intent but, more importantly, that the educational/critical aspect must be clearly defined and communicated. I do use quite a lot of video so this is very helpful to me.

Teaching Online - A Time Comparison - 1 views

  •
In brief, the study shows that yes online teaching is time consuming but NOT because of the technology involved but because it is a great time investment to interact with all students. Again brings me back to my point that YES online teaching helps to 'individualize/personalize' the student learning process. Therefore, requires greater inputs and personalize mentoring than a traditional classroom engagement.

A list of free tools for language teachers: for example, tools that can be used for creating and editing technology-enhanced tasks, activities, and materials for language learning. Especially useful for our group as we have many instructors teaching language classes!

This is on the ambitious side for the use of games in the classroom, but it would be interesting, particularly for language learning

Use Case Introduction - 2 views

  •
The following list contains brief use cases of faculty and instructors throughout Penn State using VoiceThread in unique ways for teaching and learning. These use cases describe the basic designs utilized by the instructor, reported outcomes as well as possible future uses for VoiceThread.
  •
Among the many case studies included here I found the article by Matt Meyer "Using VoiceThread for Weekly Peer Topic Discussions" the most helpful. The article details how small 'discussion groups' of 6-7 students per group were provided with an initial prompt and some framing statements. Individuals were required to respond to the prompt according to specific requirements, such as "include one personal story," "include 2 questions to the other group members to respond to," and "must comment in that particular VoiceThread discussion 3 different times during the assignment for the week. This is very similar to what I envision doing in my course.

Teaching English as a New Language to Visually Impaired and Blind ESL Students: Problem... - 0 views

  •
Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to immigrants and refugees who are visually impaired or blind involves complex challenges such as working with mainstream ESL programs that have low expectations of people with disabilities, coping with inaccessible intake tools and training materials, locating and recruiting students from immigrant and refugee populations that do not always believe people with disabilities can become literate and productive citizens, locating and recruiting appropriately trained volunteer tutors, and matching students with tutors.

Student-teaching triad model - 1 views

  •
Similar to the triad of education model...this model explains how a "student" teacher transitions to become an experienced teacher with the assistance of a 'co-operative' teacher and 'university' supervisor. The article also explains the areas which need further research to strengthen the model and its application in practice.

Keeping Pace - Changing Face of Online Learning - 3 views

  •
Very clear message that if we, and I mean we collectively don't adapt we will be left behind. Another aspect is that in the workplace, orientation to a new job, continuing education, as well as continuing professional education are often in the online format. So we defiantly need to set the stage for alternative methods of learning.

Creating an Effective Online Syllabus - 4 views

  •
More help on creating your syllabus. I found the sections on "Managing Your Student's Expectations" and creating the geographical "Map" for your course (showing students where everything is on the Bb site for example) were very helpful and provided some interesting information. It's not just about the nuts and bolts of putting a syllabus together but how doing it well can save you time and headaches later!

Why We Need an Open Curriculum - 3 views

  •
Matthew Guterl writes in the Chronicle of Higher Education about the alternative of open curriculum. It is a nice opinion piece in our discussion of Heutagogy.
  •
I really like this piece, David, thanks for sharing. The conclusion asks some pretty good questions: Parents need to think about the interior work of the curriculum and understand that what is learned in pursuit of a college degree is more than the sum of courses taken. And faculty members and administrators need to be asking themselves: What sort of student emerges from our curricula? A student who can follow a map, or a student who can make one? Because we sorely need more of the latter. And, as much as I love teaching at this place, they shouldn't all come from Brown.

This article has GREAT examples of instructions to students about discussion posts and rubrics for discussion posts. It also says to let the students create the questions for discussions, rather than providing questions for them.
