McCarthy, David.  "Andy Warhol's Silver Elvises: Meaning through Context at the Ferus Gallery in 1963".  The Art Bulletin, vol. 88, No. 2 (2006): 354-372.  Print. This article focuses on Andy Warhol's influence across the country.  He had recently emerged as one of the most prominent pop artists from coast to coast.  It talks about his anticipation of the display of his second exhibition at the prominent Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.  It also talks about how although he was an artist highly associated with particular style, each piece of his artwork held its own.

According to Soth's interpretation of Starry Night, Van Gogh is trying to get the message across that he has lost his faith in the Catholic Church. The painting goes beyond reality and he uses his imagination to create his depiction of nature. The painting represents Van Gogh's modern art style.

EBSCO. Web. 1 Nov. 2010. This articles is a close study of specific patterning in Van Gogh's drawings. It is able to provide new insight into patterns he uses. Due to a direct expression of nonverbal meaning. The article takes a look at his articulation of pattern through form, plus a close reading of the letters he wrote about the difficulties he encountered because of his unique vision. It concludes that Van Gogh's unique and personal perceptual style served his developmental needs. While also contributing to both his mental instability and his artistic greatness.

EBSCO. Web. 31 Oct. 2010. In "Pattern as Inspiration and Mode of Communication in the works of Van Gogh" it talks about how his black and white paintings still convey meaning. Van Gogh is an impressionist and has the talent of using line and shapes in order to evoke an emotional response. Van Gogh was interested in ideas rather than images, which inspired many of his pieces of work. The history of his life is shown and describes who he is and his work. In the beginning of his life Gogh did not know he wanted to be an artist, but later traveled and studied art.

This is a review on the pop-art artist Roy Lichtenstein. The review starts out by saying that Roy Lichtenstein is one of the first people to have a massive exhibit while he is still alive, and one would think that his art would be amazing because of this (one critic in particular does not like his work and calls it dumb and awkward.) The author of this review goes on to tell us a little bit about Lichtenstein's life, his style and his artwork. She then talks about the art that Roy Lichtenstein creates, "it would seem quite dull if it were not for the jazzy images he has appropriated from a wide range of twentieth-century sources in both high and low art." This article is a good starting point about getting to know the artist and how his art is viewed. 

This is a short encyclopedia entry. It tells you the basic facts about Roy Liechtenstein, and is a good starting point for a paper. Its says that he was a "master of pop art," and based his art off of comic strips. He had very different styles of art through the different decades. In the 70's he concentrated on reinterpretations of well-known paintings. In the 80's and 90's he he focused on brush strokes and painting on large canvases.

"Introduction to the Artistic Style of Surrealism." ArtHistory.net. Web 9 Nov. 2010. This article discusses how Surrealism has progressed and captured Modern imagination and Art. Surrealism started from the work and culture of Salvador Dali. Other surrealists, such as Andre Breton, wanted to explore further through literature, poetry, and the human mind. Breton described wrote a novel and described Surrealism as "those two seemingly contradictory states, dream and reality, into a sort of absolute reality, of surreality." One of the main reason why Surrealism grew and has effected contemporary art is because it has captured attention in numerous countries such as Europe, the United States, South America, and Mexico. It brought a sense of excitement for artists because it broadened the typical view of life as we know it. It allowed artists to create works in which they only dreamed about. Another surrealist artist, Kahlo, was very passionate about her work. An example of her work was an image of herself in a hospital bed as a victim with glaring objects hovering over her. She wanted to show viewers the sad nature of hopelessness. Kahlo was a large influence for the Surrealist movement.

This article rather than being a biography about her life this is mainly about the revolution of her clothing line. How she first got started and her early successes. Then it goes on to describe how she became the style icon of of her time. Also it outlines how she had to close the doors to her store when France went into World War II. Then it talks about how she made her come back after the war was over. The last part of the article talks about how even through her her death her legened as a designer lives on.

The encyclopedia is a great place to start when trying to gain more knowledge about anything. The description they give about postimpressionism is both helpful and informative. This artistic style was used by Van Gogh. The movement took place during the last two decades of the 19th century.

"How Van Gogh Influenced--and Was Influenced by--the Art of Drawing." USA Today Magazine 134.2728 (2006): 46-53. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 19 Nov. 2010. The article focuses on artists who influenced Van Gogh into starting to draw. He admired a few of them and began to draw. However, through his work he also inspired and influenced those same painters who inspired him to start. Overall, this article provides a strong base on why Van Gogh got started and what his work meant to other people. However, without those artists before him he would have never found his artistic style.

Uniquely situated at the heart of African-American youth culture, hip-hop is about music, style and voice. In many ways hip-hop is also about political action. Any discussion of hip-hop culture and rap music lends itself to examinations of rap as a means of protest among inner-city African-American youth. But the resistive benefits of rap music are not limited to its African-American listeners as can be seen by its widespread popularity among youth of all different races, classes and nationalities. As the cultural and political voice of an entire generation of youth, hip-hop has become a means of political action for its artists and fans. In addition to its prominent resistive role, political action in the hip-hop community includes political deliberation and direct uses of hip-hop to increase political awareness and to organize collaborative action. Alridge, Derrick P., and James B. Stewart. "Introduction: Hip Hop in History: Past, Present, and Future." The Journal of African American History 90.3 (2005): 190-95. JSTOR. Web. 27 Oct. 2010. This article is about the many books, articles, and journals on the history of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not solely a style and musical fad, but a cultural, political, and intellectual phenomenon. It has truly evolved since its beginning in the boroughs of New York City in the 1970s. Not many people are knowledgeable about the founders of Hip Hop such as Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc. The article suggests that in order to appreciate the Hip Hop of today, we need to learn about its past and from there we can begin to evolve its future.

The main focus is on the furniture designed in France between 1910 and 1939. These pieces were wonderfully made out of unique and rare materials, which makes then extremely valuable and therefore very expensive. Opinions from both buyers and sellers of these French antiques are included. This article is helpful in understanding that Art Deco is still a style that people would pay for today.

Web. 16 Nov. 2010 A comparison between Beethoven's editions of his "Moonlight" sonata is portrayed in this article. This sonata was composed in 1801 in C sharp minor. Beethoven's original name for the piece was "Almost a Fantasy." It also gives descriptions on more recent composers and the influence Beethoven had on their music, specifically through the "Moonlight" sonata. One composer, Wilhelm Kempff, is particularly mentioned because he was best-known for his Beethoven-like style of music.

MacNamidhe, Margaret. "Impression: Painting Quickly in France 1860-1890 (review)." Nineteenth Century French Studies 31.3-4 (2003), 352-354. This article by Margret MacNamidhe reviews the style of Impression paintings. In particular, they look at the quickness of the brush and analyize it. For example, the author commented how painstakingly it took Monet to get the right atmospheric shades without blending the wrong colors together. She continued to explain how, through the ages of Monet's paintings, he developed this particular technique and one could notice with the crusting up of the paint in later works.

Stimson, Blake.  "Andy Warhol's Red Beard".  The Art Bulletin, vol. 83, No. 3 (Sep., 2001): 527-547. Print.\n\nThis book is about Andy Warhol's change of style between 1948 and 1949.  Warhol painted as he wished, but when challenged by his art professors, he began to take their advice and paint as they advised.  During Warhol's last year at the Carnegie Institute of Technology was when he took their criticism seriously and instigated this change in his art.

Silverton, Peter. "I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol". London: Reynolds & Hearn LTD, 2006. Print. This book is about the image of The Sex Pistols and how their intentions were "clear cut" when it came to style. The likes of Johnny Rotten, not John Lydon, was a household name. Whether it was because they were allowed to play or not allowed to play The Sex Pistols were becoming very popular.

Capell, Richard. "Music & Letters." A Quarterly Publication 19.4 (1938): 375-90. JSTOR. Web. 18 Nov. 2010. Very detailed descriptions of Beethoven's physical characteristics as well as ones that are similar to his father are stated at the beginning of this article. The article is essentially a summary of Beethoven's musical compositions. To accompany the text, there are a few pictures of lines of his music. The author classifies the last years of Beethoven's life into 2 categories: heroically active and introspective. This article also describes how Beethoven felt immense pressure to make his music conform to the style of that time.

Kinderman, William. Beethoven. New York: Oxford University Press, 2009. Print. Essentially, this book goes through a timeline sequence of events in Beethoven's life. It discusses his various styles of music over the years. It also discusses his struggles, triumphs, and where the inspiration for his music came from. There are also a number of sections that cover specific compositions. At the end of the book, in the index, there is a list of Beethoven's compositions.

Soll, Lindsay. "The Swinging '70s." Entertainment Weekly 1001. July 2008: 20-20. This article discusses the influence of seventies fashion in today's culture. Lindsay Soll, the author, researches the TV show, "Swingtown" which takes place in the '70s. Soll describes the fashion and jewlery used in the show. Soll also discusses how the "Swingtown" costume designer found the authentic look from the '70s for the cast. This article lets me see the style of the 70s through writing and clips of the TV show, and what are the most authentic look of the 70s.
