The Limits of Energy Efficiency | The Energy Collective - 3 views

  • In fact many commentators and policymakers continue to believe that energy efficiency alone can address much of the CO2 problem – and that it can do so at very low cost (or even negative cost), at least compared to a ‘do nothing case’.  But  any successful policy toward mitigation of CO2 emissions must centre on CO2 pricing. Energy efficiency can only be a contributory factor and, in some circumstances, can even have a negative long-term impact if the centrality of CO2 pricing is not recognised.

Is carbon storage really all good? | Greenbang - 0 views

  •
Although interesting - and certainly backing carbon capture and storage (CCS), the article failed to discuss the negative points of the technology - instead relying on climate change numbers and fuel usage to back the argument.

Self-Powered Programmable Streetlights - The Autonoma - 0 views

  • This solar public lighting pole is totally autonomous and can be placed in any isolated area where electricity is not available.
  •
Thankfully, designers continue to explore solar powered public lighting. This version includes more intelligent functions.
  •
Compared to electrified lighting, this is quite a negative impact for copper, but if we set the baseline as no lighting, it becomes quite positive. Referring to my recent post on the impact blog, the impact of this technology is probably positive in the short run, but long-term negative.

U.S. Government Asks for Sustainability Reports from Contractors - 0 views

  • Did you know that if you are federal contractor and are on the General Services Administration, or GSA, schedule, you will be asked to report on your sustainability efforts?” That’s the question posed by Anca Novacovici, founder and president of Eco-Coach, an environmental sustainability consulting business, in a recent Huffington Post blog. Not surprisingly for a post titled “Federal Contractors Missing the Boat,” her answer is in the negative. She writes, “Many contractors are unaware of the federal reporting requests around sustainability.”

EnergyMarketPrice | Energy Prices Portal | Energy Spot Prices | Energy Forward Prices - 0 views

  • The new center-right Spanish government decided to halt temporarily the award of new feed-in tariff contracts starting January 2013 amid rising fiscal challenges. This could affect negatively about 4,500 MW and 550 MW of wind and solar PV power projects respectively, as well as other energy classes’ projects.

Germany's Solar Cell Promotion: Dark Clouds on the Horizon | Leonardo ENERGY - 0 views

  • This article demonstrates that the large feed-in tariffs currently guaranteed for solar electricity in Germany constitute a subsidization regime that, if extended to 2020, threatens to reach a level comparable to that of German hard coal production, a notoriously outstanding example of misguided political intervention. Yet, as a consequence of the coexistence of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and theEUEmissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the increased use of renewable energy technologies does not imply any additional emission reductions beyond those already achieved by ETS alone. Similarly disappointing is the net employment balance, which is likely to be negative if one takes into account the opportunity cost of this form of solar photovoltaic support. Along the lines of the International Energy Agency (IEA 2007:77), we therefore recommend the immediate and drastic reduction of the magnitude of the feed-in tariffs granted for solar-based electricity. Ultimately, producing electricity on this basis is among the most expensive greenhouse gas abatement options.

Banks urged to go green | Environment | Reuters - 0 views

  • SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Banks are contributing to global warming by funding coal and oil exploration, and should adopt policies that cut their negative impact on the environment, according to a report by a network of NGOs.

MPs' warning on biofuels angers Brussels | Environment | The Guardian - 0 views

  •
The EU yesterday denounced a House of Commons report calling for a moratorium on the increased use of biofuels and made plain it would stick to mandatory targets for the use of biofuels in transport when it unveils a climate change package today. Yesterday's report from the Commons environmental audit committee warned that biofuels were too expensive, environmentally damaging and making a negative contribution to cutting greenhouse gases, and said British government and EU plans to force greater use of biofuels should be rethought. In an unusually strong criticism of the Commons committee, Andris Piebalgs, the EU commissioner for energy, insisted that biofuels had to be supported as the "most immediately feasible way" of reversing greenhouse gas discharges from cars. "The [European] Commission strongly disagrees with the conclusion of the British House of Commons report," said Piebalgs.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Assessing the UK's 'wind rush' - 0 views

  •
Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy sector in Britain. The government is investing massive amounts of money in its future; but experts interviewed on BBC Radio 4's Costing the Earth programme claim the power of the wind to deliver electricity is being overestimated by companies keen to cash in on big subsidies.

Report questions renewables' green credentials « 3E Intelligence - 0 views

  • The most interesting energy news last week dealt with the negative environmental aspects of renewable energies, as Jesse Ausubel, one of the leading US academics on energy and climate change policies, launched a damning attack on the “green” credentials of renewable energy projects.

New Battery Design Could Give Electric Vehicles a Jolt | Renewable Energy News Article - 4 views

  •
The new battery relies on an innovative architecture called a semi-solid flow cell, in which solid particles are suspended in a carrier liquid and pumped through the system. In this design, the battery's active components - the positive and negative electrodes, or cathodes and anodes - are composed of particles suspended in a liquid electrolyte. These two different suspensions are pumped through systems separated by a filter, such as a thin porous membrane.

The Positive Economics of Climate Change Policies: What the Historical Evidence Can Tel... - 0 views

  • Most economic policy models now suggest a significantly negative impact on the economy if U.S. policymakers choose to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to any significant extent. There are a number of reasons for these inappropriate outcomes. Primarily, they are an artifact of the models and not the data. By turning to the historical record in the United States we can examine recent data to inform policymakers and business leaders what the economic policy models should be saying about energy and climate change policies. We can also use this historical record to perform a diagnostic review of recent modeling exercises to improve our understanding of their missed opportunities.

wattwatt - community for individuals interested in electrical energy efficiency - BBC t... - 0 views

  • Advocates of Planet Relief finally relented after viewers said that they wanted intelligent programmes about climate change instead of lectures from hypocritical pop stars and celebrities.
  • Peter Horrocks, head of BBC television news, added: We should be giving people information, not leading them.” The BBC has now scrapped the concept. Negative reaction to this summer’s flop Live Earth concert, promoted by Al Gore, was cited as a factor. Audience feedback found that viewers wanted serious, informed programmes about the planet’s future.

  • We found that the EV powertrain is $4.6k cheaper to produce than we thought and there is more cost reduction potential left. Consumer cost of ownership (TCO) parity vis-à-vis combustion engine (ICE) cars can be reached from 2018 (first in EU), creating an inflection point for demand.
  • Our detailed analysis of moving and wearing parts has shown that the highly lucrative spare parts business should shrink by ~60% in the end-game of a 100%-EV world, which is decades away.
  • EVs are an opportunity for tech companies because the electronics content in the Bolt is $4k higher than in an ICE car, excluding the battery.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Commodities-wise, we detected the highest deviation in weight shares between the Bolt and ICE car in copper, aluminium, battery active materials and rare earths.
  • Highest impact on markets for aluminium, copper, battery active materials, rare earths (all positive) and platinum group metals (negative).
  • Therefore, the cost difference (not the retail price difference) between the Bolt and the VW Golf, which we consider an equivalent ICE car, appears set to shrink to $2.3k.
