  • The Energy Council of Thursday 19th February focused on the second Strategic Energy Review. Inevitably, the Council was cautious agreeing concrete changes to existing rules or arrangements on the basis of the Strategic Energy Review. Instead it has cautiously welcomed many of the proposals tabled or announced in the Review, awaiting the detailed Commission proposals or the outcome of discussions in Council on the specific proposals. Nonetheless, the conclusions do demonstrate a willingness of the member States for some - probably gradual - change in developing a more Community approach to energy security issues.

  • In context of the rapid change in global energy situation, with the main lines of EU energy policy established, both the European Council (March 2008 European Council, Presidency conclusions, par.25) and the European Parliament (European Parliament Resolution (2007)413 "Towards a common European foreign policy on energy") have underlined the importance which they attach to enhancing the energy security of the EU and its Member States and to further developing the external dimension of the EU energy policy. Responding to this, the 2nd Strategic Energy Review to be prepared by the Commission will focus mainly on the related issues of security of supply and external relations.

  • Natural Gas and Hybrid Vehicles Lead Annual Green Rankings The natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX is once again the greenest new car sold in the United States, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The ACEEE's Green Book Online, released on February 19, places the Honda Civic GX on top for the second year in a row, followed by the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid. Other hybrids in the top-twelve list include the Nissan Altima Hybrid in sixth place and the Toyota Camry Hybrid in tenth. The ACEEE's annual evaluation of the current model year vehicles ranks them primarily in terms of air emissions and fuel economy.

The town has reaped benefits from the energy network through added jobs, and an additional 350,000 euros [US $514,000] in tax revenues which is handed over to the council each year.   • After ten years of research and development, Statkraft believes the time is now right to build the first osmotic power plant prototype and is therefore stepping up its initiatives and investments to develop the technology. With this decision Statkraft will have invested more than NOK 100 million to develop a new, renewable energy technology. The research work is supported by The Research Council of Norway.  The global technical potential for osmotic power production is estimated at around 1600 TWh, including around 200 TWh in Europe and 12 TWh in Norway, or 10 percent of Norway’s current power production. The innovation has already attracted attention in the international energy community.

  • Ok, so we're asking the oil and gas industry, who make their living by selling us oil and gas, whether there might any problem with the supply of oil and gas. I don't know what Secretary Bodman was expecting, but in his place I would have expected to get a sales pitch for buying more oil and gas. Given that very low expectation, the report is better than one might have feared.
